Effect of gold nanoparticles on intrinsic material parameters and luminescent characteristics of nematic liquid crystals

Chemically Functionalized Gold Nanosphere-Blended Nematic Liquid Crystals for Photonic Applications

A demand for functional materials that are capable of tailoring light-emissive properties has apparently been rising nowadays substantially for their utilization in organic optoelectronic devices. Motivated by such promising characteristics, we present highly emissive as well as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) electroluminescent composite systems composed of a nematic liquid crystals (NLC) blended with polyethylene-functionalized gold nanospheres (GNSs). The major findings of this study include superior electro-optical properties such as threshold voltage reduction by around 24%. The fall time is reduced by 11.50, 30.33, 49.33, and 63.17% respectively, and rotational viscosity is reduced by 13.86, 32.77, 36.97, and 49.58% for 5.0 × 10¹¹, 5.0 × 10¹², 2.5 × 10¹³, and 5.0 × 10¹³ number of GNS-blended liquid crystal (LC) cells. The increased UV absorbance and greatly enhanced luminescence properties have been attributed to surface plasmon resonance near the surface of GNSs and AIE effect risen due to agglomeration of the capping agent with the NLC molecules respectively, and these characteristics make them suitable for new-age display applications.

Assessment of the Antioxidant Activity of Catechin in Nutraceuticals: Comparison between a Newly Developed Electrochemical Method and Spectrophotometric Methods

The analysis of antioxidants in different foodstuffs has become an active area of research, which has led to many recently developed antioxidant assays. Many antioxidants exhibit inherent electroactivity, and, therefore, the use of electrochemical methods could be a viable approach for evaluating the overall antioxidant activity of a matrix of nutraceuticals without the need for adding reactive species. Green tea is believed to be a healthy beverage due to a number of therapeutic benefits. Catechin, one of its constituents, is an important antioxidant and possesses free radical scavenging abilities. The present paper describes the electrochemical properties of three screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), the first one based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the second one based on gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and the third one based on carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles (CNTs-GNPs). All three electrodes were modified with the laccase (Lac) enzyme, using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent between the amino groups on the laccase and aldehyde groups of the reticulation agent. As this enzyme is a thermostable catalyst, the performance of the biosensors has been greatly improved. Electro-oxidative properties of catechin were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and these demonstrated that the association of CNTs with GNPs significantly improved the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor. The corresponding limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be 5.6 × 10⁻⁸ M catechin at the CNT-Lac/SPE, 1.3 × 10⁻⁷ M at the GNP-Lac/SPE and 4.9 × 10⁻⁸ M at the CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE. The biosensors were subjected to nutraceutical formulations containing green tea in order to study their catechin content, using CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE, through DPV. Using a paired t-test, the catechin content estimated was in agreement with the manufacturer’s specification. In addition, the relationship between the CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE response at a specific potential and the antioxidant activity of nutraceuticals, as determined by conventional spectrophotometric methods (DPPH, galvinoxyl and ABTS), is discussed in the context of developing a fast biosensor for the relative antioxidant activity quantification.

Nanoparticle-Induced Property Changes in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Doping liquid crystals with nanoparticles is a widely accepted method to enhance liquid crystal’s intrinsic properties. In this study, a quick and reliable method to characterise such colloidal suspensions using an optical multi-parameter analyser, a cross-polarised intensity measurement-based device, is presented. Suspensions characterised in this work are either plasmonic (azo-thiol gold AzoGNPs) or ferroelectric Sn₂P₂S₆ (SPS) nanoparticles in nematic liquid crystals. The elastic constants and rotational viscosity showed nonlinear dependence on the concentration of AzoGNPs, initially increasing at lower concentrations and then decreasing at higher concentrations, indicating some degree of particle aggregation. For the SPS suspension, the elastic constant decreased with doping, while the rotational viscosity increased, in agreement with previous findings. Through viscosity measurements, the stability of SPS suspension over ten years is also highlighted.

Mesomorphic Behavior of Symmetric Azomethine Dimers Containing Different Chromophore Groups

A series of new azomethine dimers was synthesized by the condensation reaction of flexible bis-benzaldehydes with four aromatic amines containing phenyl, naphthyl, anthracene and pyrene groups. Their right structure was confirmed by FTIR and ¹H-NMR spectroscopy and their thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and polarized light optical microscopy. A view on their photophysical behavior was gained by UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The dimers containing pyrene and anthracene presented liquid crystalline behavior, while the other dimers were crystalline compounds. Two dimers containing pyrene moieties formed mesomorphic glasses and had intense luminescence, promising properties for applications in building optoelectronic devices.

Electro-optical performance of nematic liquid crystals doped with gold nanoparticles

The effect of gold nanoparticles on the dielectric, electro-optical, and rheological properties of the ZhK-1289 liquid-crystal mixture that define the response time of liquid-crystal devices with a concentration range of 0.06-5 wt% was investigated in this study. A phase diagram of the obtained composites was formed demonstrating an increase in the clearing temperature and a broadening of the mesophase existence range in the case of doping nanoparticles. It was found that in the obtained dispersions there are structural rearrangements in the low concentration range leading to an increase in the lateral bending stiffness of the liquid-crystal matrix, a decrease in the response time and threshold voltage of the Freedericksz transition, and also an increase in the anisotropy of the dielectric permittivity and the refraction index. The improvement of the electro-optical performance of the liquid crystal can be caused by the nanoparticle adsorption of impurity ions, which reduces the field-screening effect in the liquid crystal. According to the results obtained in this study, the optimal values of the physical parameters of liquid-crystal composites doped with gold nanoparticles for their application in practice are achieved in a concentration range of 0.5-1 wt%.
