Magnetically Responsive Gallium-Based Liquid Metal: Preparation, Property and Application

Magnetically responsive soft smart materials have garnered significant academic attention due to their flexibility, remote controllability, and reconfigurability. However, traditional soft materials used in the construction of these magnetically responsive systems typically exhibit low density and poor thermal and electrical conductivities. These limitations result in suboptimal performance in applications such as medical radiography, high-performance electronic devices, and thermal management. To address these challenges, magnetically responsive gallium-based liquid metals have emerged as promising alternatives. In this review, we summarize the methodologies for achieving magnetically responsive liquid metals, including the integration of magnetic agents into the liquid metal matrix and the utilization of induced Lorentz forces. We then provide a comprehensive discussion of the key physicochemical properties of these materials and the factors influencing them. Additionally, we explore the advanced and potential applications of magnetically responsive liquid metals. Finally, we discuss the current challenges in this field and present an outlook on future developments and research directions.

Capacity of Aqueous Solutions of the Ionic Liquid 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Acetate to Partially Depolymerize Lignin at Ambient Temperature and Pressure

Lignin is a very attractive and abundant biopolymer with the potential to be a biorenewable source of a large number of value-added organic chemicals. The current state-of-the-art methods fail to provide efficient valorization of lignin in this regard without the involvement of harsh conditions and auxiliary substances that compromise the overall sustainability of the proposed processes. Making an original approach from the set of mildest temperature and pressure conditions, this work identifies and explores the capacity of an aqueous solution of the nonvolatile ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C2mim][OAc]) to partially depolymerize technical lignin (Indulin AT) by means of a treatment consisting in the simple contact at ambient temperature and pressure. Among a considerable number of valuable phenolic molecules that were identified in the resulting fluid, vanillin (yield of about 3 g/kg) and guaiacol (yield of about 1 g/kg) were the monophenolic compounds obtained in a higher concentration. The properties of the post-treatment solids recovered remain similar to those of the original lignin, although with a relatively lower abundance of guaiacyl units (in agreement with the generation of guaiacyl-derived phenolic molecules, such as vanillin and guaiacol). The assistance of the treatment with UV irradiation in the presence of nanoparticle catalysts does not lead to an improvement in the yields of phenolic compounds.

Array of Miniaturized Amperometric Gas Sensors Using Atomic Gold Decorated Pt/PANI Electrodes in Room Temperature Ionic Liquid Films

Miniaturized sensors possess many advantages, such as rapid response, easy chip integration, a possible lower concentration of target compound detection, etc. However, a major issue reported is a low signal response. In this study, a catalyst, the atomic gold clusters of Au_n where n = 2, was decorated at a platinum/polyaniline (Pt/PANI) working electrode to enhance the sensitivity of butanol isomers gas measurement. Isomer quantification is challenging because this compound has the same chemical formula and molar mass. Furthermore, to create a tiny sensor, a microliter of room-temperature ionic liquid was used as an electrolyte. The combination of the Au₂ clusters decorated Pt/PANI and room temperature ionic liquid with several fixed electrochemical potentials was explored to obtain a high solubility of each analyte. According to the results, the presence of Au₂ clusters increased the current density due to electrocatalytic activity compared to the electrode without Au₂ clusters. In addition, the Au₂ clusters on the modified electrode had a more linear concentration dependency trend than the modified electrode without atomic gold clusters. Finally, the separation among butanol isomers was enhanced using different combination of room-temperature ionic liquids and fixed potentials.

Molecular dynamics simulation studies of 1,3-dimethyl imidazolium nitrate ionic liquid with water

The fundamental understanding of intermolecular interactions of ionic liquids (ILs) with water is essential in predicting IL-water thermodynamic properties. In this study, intermolecular or noncovalent interactions were studied for 1,3-dimethyl imidazolium [DMIM]⁺ cation and nitrate [NO₃]^- anion with water, employing quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics simulations. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed using a revised multipolar polarizable force field. The effect of water on ionic liquids was evaluated in terms of thermodynamic and dynamic properties. Thermodynamic properties included liquid densities ρ, excess molar volumes ΔV^E, and liquid structures gr. Dynamic properties included self-diffusion coefficients D of mixture constituents as a function of water concentration. The density of ionic liquid-water mixtures monotonically decrease with increasing concentration of water. A negative excess volume was obtained for low and high water concentrations, demonstrating strong intermolecular interactions of water with ionic liquid components. Liquid structures of ionic liquid-water mixtures revealed a tendency for anions to interact with cations at shorter intermolecular distances when the water concentration is increased. Diffusion rates were found to increase for all mixture components with increase in the fraction of water. A significant change in the diffusion rate was found at ∼0.3 weight fraction of water. However, the water self-diffusion coefficient was dominant at all concentrations. The ratio of water/anion and anion/cation self-diffusion coefficients was found to decrease linearly with increasing concentration of water molecules.
