Temperature evolution of the bulk nano-structure in a homologous series of room temperature ionic liquids

Nanostructure and Dynamics of the Locally Concentrated Ionic Liquid 2:1 (wt:wt) HMIM FAP:TFTFE and HMIM FAP on Graphite and Gold Electrodes as a Function of Potential

Video-rate atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to record the near-surface nanostructure and dynamics of one pure ionic liquid (IL), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (HMIM FAP), and a locally-concentrated IL comprising HMIM FAP with the low viscosity diluent 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ether (TFTFE), on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and Au(111) electrodes as a function of potential. Over the potential range measured (open-circuit potential ± 1 V), different near-surface nanostructures are observed. For pure HMIM FAP, globular aggregates align in rows on HOPG, whereas elongated and worm-like nanostructures form on Au(111). For 2:1 (wt:wt) HMIM FAP:TFTFE, larger and less defined diluent swollen IL aggregates are present on both electrodes. Long-lived near-surface nanostructures for HMIM FAP and the 2:1 (wt:wt) HMIM FAP:TFTFE persist on both electrodes. 2:1 (wt:wt) HMIM FAP:TFTFE mixture diffuses more rapidly than pure HMIM FAP on both electrodes with obviously higher diffusion coefficients on HOPG than on Au(111) due to weaker electrostatic and solvophobic interactions between near-surface aggregates and Stern layer ions. These outcomes provide valuable insights for a wide range of IL applications in interface sciences, including electrolytes, catalysts, lubricants, and sensors.

Chain-length dependent organisation in mixtures of hydrogenous and fluorous ionic liquids

As part of an ongoing study of the structure and properties of mixtures of ionic liquids in which one component has a hydrocarbon chain and the other a semiperfluorocarbon chain, we now report a study of the mixtures [C8MIM]1-x[C10MIM-F17]x[Tf2N], [C10MIM]1-x[C8MIM-F13]x[Tf2N] and [C10MIM]1-x[C10MIM-F17]x[Tf2N], where [C8MIM][Tf2N] is 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C10MIM][Tf2N] is 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C8MIM-F13][Tf2N] is 1-(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl)-3-methylimidizolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and [C10MIM-F17][Tf2N] is 1-(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl)-3-methylimidizolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. The mixtures were investigated using small-angle X-ray (SAXS) and neutron (SANS) scattering complemented by molecular dynamics simulations (with viscosity and surface tension measurements also possible for the mixtures [C10MIM]1-x[C8MIM-F13]x[Tf2N]). Unlike previous studies of [C8MIM]1-x[C8MIM-F13]x[Tf2N], where no strong evidence of alkyl/fluoroalkyl chain segregation or triphilic behaviour was seen (Elstone et al., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2023, 127, 7394-7407), these new mixtures show the formation of small aggregates of varying sizes of each component, even though all were co-miscible across the full range of compositions. Thus, while a clear polar non-polar peak (PNPP) was observed at large or small values of x, at intermediate compositions the small-angle neutron scattering at low q was dominated by scattering from these small aggregates, while at other compositions, there was little or no evidence of the PNPP. The origins of this behaviour are discussed in terms of inter-chain interactions.

Ordering of ionic liquids at a charged sapphire interface: Evolution with cationic chain length

HYPOTHESIS

Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) bulk's molecular layering dominates their structure also at the RTIL/sapphire interface, increasing the layer spacing with the cationic alkyl chain length n. However, the negatively-charged sapphire surface compresses the layers, increases the layering range, and affects the intra-layer structure in yet unknown ways.

EXPERIMENTS

X-ray reflectivity (XR) off the RTIL/sapphire interface, for a broad homologous RTIL series 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethansulfonyl)imide, hitherto unavailable for any RTIL.

FINDINGS

RTIL layers against the sapphire, exhibit two spacings: da and db. da is n-varying, follows the behavior of the bulk spacing but exhibits a downshift, thus showing significant layer compression, and over twofold polar slab thinning. The latter suggests exclusion of anions from the interfacial region due to the negative sapphire charging by x-ray-released electrons. The layering range is larger than the bulk's. db is short and near n-independent, suggesting polar moieties' layering, the coexistence mode of which with the da-spaced layering is unclear. Comparing the present layering with the bulk's and the RTIL/air interface's provides insight into the Coulomb and dispersion interaction balance dominating the RTIL's structure and the impact thereon of the presence of a charged solid interface.

Phase coexistence in [C22/C1MIm]+[NO3]- ionic-liquid mixtures and first-order phase transitions from homogeneous liquid to smectic B by varying the cation ratio

We perform molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the transition processes of [C22/C1MIm]+[NO3]- binary mixtures by varying the cation ratio of C22 to C1 at a fixed temperature of 400 K. The cation ratio is tuned by ranging C22 percentage from 0% to 100% with a fixed number of 4096 total simulated ion pairs. Our simulated-annealing results indicate that, at 400 K, pure C1 is a homogeneous liquid whilst pure C22 is an ionic liquid crystal (ILC) of smectic-B (SmB) type. With increasing C22 percentage, the system goes through a first-order phase transition from homogeneous liquid to nano-fragment liquid in the range from 15% to 17.5%, during which some of the individual cationic alkyl side chains locally aggregate to form small bundles "floating" in the polar "solvent" composed of anions and cationic head groups. Although the side chains in each bundle are parallelly aligned, the bundles distribute randomly without a global orientation. As the C22 percentage further increases, another first-order phase transition occurs to bring the system into the SmB ILC phase. Particularly, when the C22 percentage is in the range from 45% to 50%, the SmB phase coexists with the liquid phase containing both individual and bundled alkyl side chains.

Small-angle neutron scattering from mixtures of long- and short-chain 3-alkyl-1-methyl imidazolium bistriflimides

The preparation of mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) represents an attractive strategy to tune their properties, an important aspect of which is to understand how the structure of the bulk varies with composition. In this study, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to probe mixtures of methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids [C_nmim][Tf₂N] with [C₂mim][Tf₂N]) (n = 4, 6, 8 and 10) and of [C_mmim][Tf₂N] with [C₁₂mim][Tf₂N] (m = 2, 4, 6 and 8). Mixtures were prepared in both contrasts, which is to say that one component would be fully hydrogenated while the other was fully deuterated, and vice versa. Data were fitted using a range of appropriate models, of which the Teubner-Strey model provided most useful information and the pure materials showed a nascent Polar Non-polar Peak (PNPP) for n = 6, which became more evident as n increased. In the mixtures [C_nmim]_x[C₂mim]_1-x[Tf₂N], the PNPP was evident for n = 10 and 8, nascent for n = 6 and absent for n = 4, with percolation showing a very strong dependence on the chain length of the added IL, [C_nmim][Tf₂N]. In contrast, while the ability of [C₁₂mim][Tf₂N] to form percolated structures was damped when mixed with [C_mmim][Tf₂N], as m increased from 2 to 6, this effect was less strong. However, data obtained for mixtures of [C₁₂mim][Tf₂N] and [C₈mim][Tf₂N], both of which percolate as pure materials, did not fit easily in any of the models applied to the previous systems and gave results that depended on the contrast used. Complementary small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data, however, showed the expected evolution and behaviour of the PNPP, COP and CP, revealing that the unexpected observations were due to an adventitious matching out of isotopic contrasts. As well as revealing details of the structures of these IL mixtures, the results also point to complementary strategies for generating bulk percolated structures as a function of cation chain length.

Green novel multicomponent synthesis and biological evaluation of new oxazolopyrazoloazepines and reduction of nitrophenols in the presence of Ag/Fe3O4/ZnO@MWCNT MNCs

In this research, new derivatives of oxazolopyrazoloazepines were synthesized in high yields using multicomponent reaction of anilines, oxalylchloride, alkyl bromides, activated acetylenic compounds, hydrazine and ethyl bromopyruvate in the presence of Ag/Fe₃O₄/ZnO@MWCNT magnetic nanocomposite (MNCs) as a high-performance magnetic catalyst in ionic liquid at room temperature. The Ag/Fe₃O₄/ZnO@MWCNT magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs) were synthesized using 1-octhyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide ([OMIM]Br) as a stabilizer and soft template. Also, the catalytic activity of the Ag/Fe₃O₄/ZnO@MWCNT MNCs was evaluated in reduction of organic pollutants such as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in water at mild conditions. The results indicated that the biosynthesized nanocomposites (NCs) have high catalytic activity for organic pollutants within few seconds. Because of having benzazepine nucleus in the synthesized compounds, we investigate antioxidant property of some synthesized oxazolopyrazoloazepines by diphenyl-picrylhydrazine radical trapping and power of ferric reduction experiment. Short time of reaction, high yields of product, easy separation of catalyst and products are some advantages of this procedure.

Comment on "Bi-layering at ionic liquid surfaces: a sum - frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy - and molecular dynamics simulation-based study" by T. Iwahashi, T. Ishiyama, Y. Sakai, A. Morita, D. Kim and Y. Ouchi, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2020, 22, 12565

This Comment raises several questions concerning the surface structure concluded in the paper referenced in the title. Specifically, that paper ignores previous experiments and simulations which demonstrate for the same ionic liquids depth-decaying, multilayered surface-normal density profiles rather than the claimed molecular mono- or bi-layers. We demonstrate that the claimed structure does not reproduce the measured X-ray reflectivity, which probes directly the surface-normal density profile. The measured reflectivities are found, however, to be well-reproduced by a multilayered density model. These results, and previous experimental and simulation results, cast severe doubt on the validity of the surface structure claimed in the paper referenced in the title.
