Synthesis and characterization of sodium laurylsulfonate modified silicon dioxide for the efficient removal of europium

Surface modification of quartz sand: A review of its progress and its effect on heavy metal adsorption

Quartz sand (SiO₂) is a prevalent filtration medium, boasting wide accessibility, superior stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, its utility is often curtailed by its sleek surface, limited active sites, and swift saturation of adsorption sites. This review outlines the prevalent strategies and agents for quartz sand surface modification and provides a comprehensive analysis of the various modification reagents and their operative mechanisms. It delves into the mechanism and utility of surface-modified quartz sand for adsorbing heavy metal ions (HMIs). It is found that the reported modifiers usually form connections with the surface of quartz sand through electrostatic forces, van der Waals forces, pore filling, chemical bonding, and/or molecular entanglement. The literature suggests that these modifications effectively address issues inherent to natural quartz sand, such as its low superficial coarseness, rapid adsorption site saturation, and limited adsorption capacity. Regrettably, comprehensive investigations into the particle size, regenerative capabilities, and application costs of surface-modified quartz sand and the critical factors for its wider adoption are lacking in most reports. The adsorption mechanisms indicate that surface-modified quartz sand primarily removes HMIs from aqueous solutions through surface complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic and gravitational forces. However, these findings were derived under controlled laboratory conditions, and practical applications for treating real wastewater necessitate overcoming further laboratory-scale obstacles. Finally, this review outlines the limitations of partially surface modified quartz sand and suggests potential venues for future developments, providing a valuable reference for the advancement of cost-effective, HMI-absorbing, surface-modified quartz sand filter media.

Decontamination of 137Cs,95Zr, 154Eu and 144Ce from aqueous solutions using polyacrylamide titanium tungstosilicate

Polyacrylamide titanium tungstosilicate (PAM/TiWSi) composite was synthesised using a sol–gel process and characterized via FT-IR, SEM, XRD, and TGA methods. The effects of several factors on the adsorption of Cs+, Eu3+, Ce3+and Zr4+ have been studied, including contact duration, pH, temperature, and starting concentration. PAM/TiWSi sorption of Cs+, Eu3+, Ce3+and Zr4+ was studied in terms of isotherms and kinetics. The Freundlich model was better linked with isotherm data than the Langmuir model. Cs+, Eu3+, Ce3+and Zr4+ have maximum sorption capacities (Qmax) of 30.7, 26.6, 25,3 and 29.7 mg.g−1, respectively. Furthermore, the sorption process was found based on pseudo-second-order.

Elaboration of composite based on the incorporation of marble particles into polymeric framework for the removal of Co(II) and Eu(III)

The incorporation of marble particles into the framework of composite material through the polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide acid (AM) using induced gamma irradiation was performed. The novel poly[AA-AM]-marble composite was characterized by multiple analytical instruments such as: energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TGA), Fourier transformer infrared (FTIR), surface area measurements using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Radioisotopes of fission (152+154Eu) and activation products (60Co) are the major environmental threats. Sorption of stable isotopes of cobalt and europium onto the synthesized composite material as the sorbent is applied. Sorption kinetics of Eu3+ and Co2+ were computed. The obtained results were analyzed by pseudo-first- and second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich kinetic models. It is deduced that the pseudo-second-order was more fitted and a chemisorption mechanism was suggested. The sorption capacity for Eu3+ and Co2+ on the prepared composite material was measured at the contact time (2 h) and pH = 4 (for Eu3+), pH = 6 (for Co2+) and it was found to be 91.2 and 13.1 mg/g, respectively. A promising result for the decontamination of both Eu and Co ions was obtained in various aquatic ecosystem applications such as: river water, tap water and groundwater.
