3D Printable Polymer Electrolytes for Ionic Conduction based on Protic Ionic Liquids

A range of protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on tri-n-alkylammonium cations and mesylate/triflate anions were incorporated into a polymer matrix to form ionogels (IGs). These systems were investigated for their thermal and electrochemical behaviour, as well as under the aspect of ion motion via PFG-NMR. The ionic conductivities of the ILs/IGs are in the range of 10-4-10-3 S/cm-1 at elevated temperatures and the diffusion coefficients are around 10-11 m2 s-1. Successful 3D printing of an IG with 70 wt % of IL is possible via stereolithography approaches, opening up applications in, e. g., structured ion-conductive membranes.

Dynamics of ionic liquids by means of nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation - overview of theoretical approaches

This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the spin relaxation theory needed for exploring nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry to study the dynamical properties of ionic liquids. The term NMR relaxometry refers to relaxation experiments performed over a wide range of magnetic fields (resonance frequencies). In this way, dynamical processes occurring on timescales from milliseconds to nanoseconds can be studied, including translational and rotational dynamics of both types of ions (cations and anions). In order to take advantage of the remarkable experimental possibilities, appropriate theoretical models linking relaxation properties with ionic motion are needed. With the aim of providing such theoretical tools, 1H and 19F relaxation models for ionic liquids have been reviewed and their applications have been illustrated by several examples. The presented models are valid for an arbitrary magnetic field, include all relevant relaxation pathways and allow to extract detailed information about the translational and rotational dynamics of the ions. On the basis of the theoretical models, formulas allowing a straightforward determination of the translational diffusion coefficients of cations and anions from combined 1H and 19F relaxation studies have been derived and discussed in detail.

Inflection Point in Pressure Dependence of Ionic Conductivity as a Fingerprint of Local Structure Formation

In this study, we employed dielectric spectroscopy to investigate the effect of temperature and pressure on the ion dynamics of phosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) differing by the length of an alkyl chain, [P666,n][TFSI] (n = 2, 6, 8, 12). We found that both temperature and pressure dependence of dc-conductivity (σdc) determined for all examined ILs herein exhibit unique characteristics, unusual for aprotic ILs. Two regions differing by ion self-organization have been identified from the derivative analysis of σdc(T-1) data. On the other hand, isothermal measurements performed at elevated pressure revealed a unique concave-convex character of σdc(P) dependences, resulting in a clear minimum in the pressure behavior of activation volume. Such an inflection point characterizing the pressure dependence of σdc in [P666,n][TFSI] ILs can be considered an inherent feature of ion dynamics governed by structural self-assembly. Our results offer a unique perspective to link the ion mobility at various T-P conditions to the nanostructural organization of ionic systems.

Effect of bulky anions on the liquid-liquid phase transition in phosphonium ionic liquids: Ambient and high-pressure dielectric studies

Although the first-order liquid-liquid phase transition (LLT) has been reported to exist in various systems (i.e., phosphorus, silicon, water, triphenyl phosphite, etc.), it is still one of the most challenging problems in the field of physical science. Recently, we found that this phenomenon occurs in the family of trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium [P_666,14]⁺ based ionic liquids (ILs) with different anions (Wojnarowska et al in Nat Commun 13:1342, 2022). To understand the molecular structure-property relationships governing LLT, herein, we examine ion dynamics of two other quaternary phosphonium ILs containing long alkyl chains in cation and anion. We found that IL with the anion containing branched -O-(CH₂)₅-CH₃ side chains does not reveal any signs of LLT, while IL with shorter alkyl chains in the anion brings a hidden LLT, i.e., it overlaps with the liquid-glass transition. Ambient pressure dielectric and viscosity measurements revealed a peculiar behavior of ion dynamics near T_g for IL with hidden LLT. Moreover, high-pressure studies have shown that IL with hidden LLT has relatively strong pressure sensitivity compared to the one without first-order phase transition. At the same time, the former exposes the inflection point indicating the concave-convex character of logτ_σ(P) dependences.

The dielectric response of phenothiazine-based glass-formers with different molecular complexity

We examined a series of structurally related glass-forming liquids in which a phenothiazine-based tricyclic core (PTZ) was modified by attaching n-alkyl chains of different lengths (n = 4, 8, 10). We systematically disentangled the impact of chemical structure modification on the intermolecular organization and molecular dynamics probed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns evidenced that all PTZ-derivatives are not 'ordinary' liquids and form nanoscale clusters. The chain length has a decisive impact on properties, exerting a plasticizing effect on the dynamics. Its elongation decreases glass transition temperature with slight impact on fragility. The increase in the medium-range order was manifested as a broadening of the dielectric loss peak reflected in the lower value of stretching parameter β_KWW. A disagreement with the behavior observed for non-associating liquids was found as a deviation from the anti-correlation between the value of β_KWW and the relaxation strength of the α-process. Besides, to explain the broadening of loss peak in PTZ with the longest (decyl) chain a slow Debye process was postulated. In contrast, the sample with the shortest alkyl chain and a less complex structure with predominant supramolecular assembly through π-π stacking exhibits no clear Debye-mode fingerprints. The possible reasons are also discussed.

Magnitude of Dynamically Correlated Molecules as an Indicator for a Dynamical Crossover in Ionic Liquids

In this work, we show how the structure and intermolecular interactions affect the dynamic heterogeneity of aprotic ionic liquids. Using calorimetric data for 30 ionic samples, we examine the influence of the strength of van der Waals and Coulombic interactions on dynamic heterogeneity. We show that the dynamic length scale of spatially heterogeneous dynamics decreases significantly with decreasing intermolecular distances. Additionally, we assume that the magnitude of the number of dynamically correlated molecules at the liquid-glass transition temperature can be treated as an indicator for a dynamical crossover.

Thorough studies of tricyanomethanide-based ionic liquids - the influence of alkyl chain length of the cation

The glassy, supercooled, and normal liquid states of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide series [CnC1im][TCM] (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 16) were investigated by dielectric and mechanical (rheological) experiments supplemented by X-ray diffraction. The conductivity relaxation was found to be accompanied by a pronounced secondary relaxation. However, based on ambient and high-pressure results as well as the coupling model, we assumed that the latter one can not be classified as Johari-Goldstein relaxation. Moreover, the studies on the nanoscale organization of ionic liquids indicated that 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ILs begin to form nanoscale aggregates when the alkyl chain of the cation has six carbon atoms.
