Abstract
Researchers continuously focused on the fabrication of innovative drug delivery systems to prevent microbial infections while minimizing systemic side effects. Among these, pH-sensitive antibiotic release systems based on bio-based materials have gained great attention due to their ability to precisely modulate drug kinetics and enhance therapeutic efficacy. Herein, pH-sensitive alginate/hyaluronic acid/gelatin ternary blended films were fabricated for the controlled release of ampicillin. Swelling capacity, hydrolytic degradation profile, pH reversibility and in vitro ampicillin release behavior of produced films were investigated in both simulated gastric (pH 1.2) and intestinal (pH 7.4) environments. The cumulative release amount of ampicillin at pH 1.2 (61.0 ± 1.07 mg drug/g polymer) was greater than that of at pH 7.4 (43.0 ± 1.05 mg drug/g polymer) proved that release behavior of ampicillin for produced films is pH-dependent. Based on the fitted release data, best fit was found as the first-order kinetic model with the highest R2 values of 0.966 and 0.962 for both pH conditions. According to Korsmeyer-Peppas model, drug release mechanism is also controlled by case II-transport. Furthermore, produced films demonstrated excellent cytocompatibility. All results revealed that obtained films could be a promising drug carrier to traditional targeting systems for site-specific, pH-sensitive ampicillin delivery in both gastric and intestine.

Abstract
Bentonite-based composites have been widely utilized in the removal of various pollutants due to low cost, environmentally friendly, ease-to-operate, whereas the recent advances concerning the application of bentonite-based composites in environmental remediation were not available. Herein, the modification (i.e., acid/alkaline washing, thermal treatment and hybrids) of bentonite was firstly reviewed; Then the recent advances of adsorption of environmental concomitants (e.g., organic (dyes, microplastics, phenolic and other organics) and inorganic pollutants (heavy metals, radionuclides and other inorganic pollutants)) on various bentonite-based composites were summarized in details. Meanwhile, the effect of environmental factors and interaction mechanism between bentonite-based composites and contaminants were also investigated. Finally, the conclusions and prospective of bentonite-based composites in the environmental remediation were proposed. It is demonstrated that various bentonite-based composites exhibited the high adsorption/degradation capacity towards environmental pollutants under the specific conditions. The interaction mechanism involved the mineralization, physical/chemical adsorption, co-precipitation and complexation. This review highlights the effect of different functionalization of bentonite-based composites on their adsorption capacity and interaction mechanism, which is expected to be helpful to environmental scientists for applying bentonite-based composites into practical environmental remediation.

Abstract
The ubiquitous presence of contaminants in water poses a major threat to the safety of ecosystems and human health, and so more materials or technologies are urgently needed to eliminate pollutants. Polymer materials have shown significant advantages over most other adsorption materials in the decontamination of wastewater by virtue of their relatively high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate. In recent years, "green development" has become the focus of global attention, and the environmental friendliness of materials themselves has been concerned. Therefore, natural polymers-derived materials are favored in the purification of wastewater due to their unique advantages of being renewable, low cost and environmentally friendly. Among them, natural plant gums show great potential in the synthesis of environmentally friendly polymer adsorption materials due to their rich sources, diverse structures and properties, as well as their renewable, non-toxic and biocompatible advantages. Natural plant gums can be easily modified by facile derivatization or a graft polymerization reaction to enhance the inherent properties or introduce new functions, thus obtaining new adsorption materials for the efficient purification of wastewater. This paper summarized the research progress on the fabrication of various gums-based adsorbents and their application in the decontamination of different types of pollutants. The general synthesis mechanism of gums-based adsorbents, and the adsorption mechanism of the adsorbent for different types of pollutants were also discussed. This paper was aimed at providing a reference for the design and development of more cost-effective and environmentally friendly water purification materials.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop improved multi-component beads with controlled, sustained delivery of antibiotics, such as gentamicin (GM). Antibiotic-loaded beads with rapid-release and the sustained-release system can be used for bone restoration. Single and multi-component beads were prepared by gelation using various combinations of chitosan and calcium chloride as cationic components and alginate and citric acid as anions. GM release was also controlled by crosslinking using citric acid. The optimum beads were obtained using 5% or 2% sodium alginate, 3% chitosan, and 0.1 mol/L citric acid. The beads were characterized by FTIR, TG-DTG, swelling behavior, and SEM. All GM-loaded beads revealed good antimicrobial activity. The rate and kinetics of release in the phosphate buffer solution were controlled by changing the amount of chitosan in the calcium chloride solution and using citric acid as the crosslinking agent. Crosslinked beads were prepared for the release of about 80% of the loaded drug within 24 h. The study concluded that the chitosan-alginate beads provided faster GM release but crosslinking with citric acid was efficient for sustained-release beads containing gentamicin.

Abstract
The effective removal of toxic dyes from aqueous solution is of great significance for environmental protection. Herein, an eco-friendly sugarcane cellulose (SBC)/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na) adsorbent reinforced with carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was successfully prepared via a facile sol-gel method. The resulting gel-like adsorbent or composite hydrogel was comprehensively characterized with FTIR, SEM, EDS, TGA analysis. The adsorption behaviors of the adsorbent in the removal of methylene blue (MB) were systematically investigated. Results showed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model described adsorption process accurately with the maximum adsorption capacity of 362.3 mg g-1, indicating that adsorption behavior is a monolayer chemical adsorption. Moreover, the composited hydrogel displayed excellent adsorption selectivity on MB/MO or MB/RhB mixed dyes. In addition, adsorbent showed great stability and reusability with almost no loss in adsorption capacity after 7 cycles. Due to the facile preparation process and outstanding mechanical properties, as well as high recyclability, g-C3N4@SBC/CMC has great potential in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
This research presents the obtaining of a biochar (CB) from the use of pomegranate peel (Punica granatum) conditioned with iron and cerium nanoparticles (C-Fe/Ce), as well as its characterization by SEM (Scanning Electronic Microscopy), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry), TGA (Thermogravimetric analysis), EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy), XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) and evaluation of the adsorption capacity of ampicillin (AMP) in aqueous phase at 20, 30 and 40 °C. The maximum adsorption capacity for CB was 18.97 mg g-1 and for C-Fe/Ce, 27.61 mg g-1 at pH of 7, observing that with increasing temperature, the sorption capacity decreases in both materials, the experimental data was fitted to various mathematical models and the best fit was the pseudo-second order model for the kinetics, whilst for the adsorption isotherms the best fit was with the Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption process is carried out in a monolayer on a homogeneous surface, through a chemisorption process. According to the thermodynamic parameters this process is carried out through an exothermic reaction. The results obtained indicate that both materials are suitable for the removal of AMP in the aqueous phase and that they can be reused up to 5 times.

Abstract
Dye molecules are one of the most hazardous compounds for human and animal health and the excess intake of these materials can create toxic impacts. Several studies show the practicality of the adsorption process for dye uptake from wastewaters. In recent years, various adsorbents were used to be efficient in this process. Among all, polymeric adsorbents demonstrate great applicability in different environmental conditions and attract many researchers to work on them, although there is not enough reliable and precise information regarding these adsorbents. This study aims to investigate some influential parameters such as their type, physical properties, experimental conditions, their capacity, and further modeling along with a comparison with non-polymeric adsorbents. The influence of the main factors of adsorption capacity was studied and the dominant mechanism is explained extensively.

Abstract
Colorimetric indicator gels were developed by incorporating anthocyanin (AC) obtained from red cabbage into poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)-based hydrogel containing lignocellulose nanofiber (LCNF). The PEGDA-based hydrogel was prepared by mixing all of the mentioned components at the specific composition, and the hydrogels were cured under UV light (245 nm) for 1 min. The pH-response, UV absorption, swelling ratio, and mechanical properties of PEGDA/LCNF were determined. It was further found that PEGDA and LCNF mount play an important role in adjusting the mechanical properties of PEGDA/LCNF. In general, the presence of LCNF improved the mechanical properties and swelling ratio of PEGDA. The incorporation of red cabbage anthocyanin into the PEGDA/LCNF film showed multicolor response when specific pH buffers were introduced. Based on the multicolor response of PEGDA/LCNF/CA, this gel film indicator can be developed as a food freshness indicator that focuses on the detection of ammonia and amine compound.

Abstract
In this study, fly ash (FA) was modified by sodium hydroxide to prepare a new adsorption material (IP) and treat Pb2+- and Cd2+-polluted wastewater. The effect of preparation parameters (mass ratio of FA/NaOH and modification temperature) on IP adsorption performance was investigated. The results indicated that the IP4 showed the highest adsorption capacity prepared at the FA/NaOH mass ratio of 1 : 2 and the roasting temperature of 250°C. The IP4 was characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, and FTIR analyses. The results showed that the surface morphology and microstructure of FA were significantly changed. Furthermore, in order to study the adsorption performance of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on IP4, the different initial concentrations of Pb2+ and Cd2+, pH, and contact time were analyzed, and the results indicated that IP4 has excellent adsorption capacity for heavy metals. In addition, kinetic model results demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on IP4 was better described by a pseudo-second-order model.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is nowadays considered a serious environmental problem, especially within the Mediterranean region. With this in mind, water shortages are also a very serious and prevalent concern in third world countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of using Jordanian bentonite, a simple and natural clay, as a possible adsorbent to decrease the negative characteristics of raw OMW, as an approach to the development of a methodology that addresses the OMW problem without affecting freshwater resources. The purified bentonite was activated by sodium ions at room temperature. FTIR, XRD, TGA, and BET surface area measurements were performed. OMW was contacted with both purified and activated bentonite in the batch technique to figure out the optimum parameters for the adsorption process. Physiochemical parameters of OMW were measured before and after treatment. The maximum adsorption qm was found as 8.81 mg/g at 323 K for the total phenolic compounds. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were utilized to describe the equilibrium isotherms and both models fit well. The parameters of thermodynamic show that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in nature. These promising results along with the sodium activation of bentonite significantly improve bentonite’s adsorption capacity.

Abstract
In the present study, starch based ZnO nancomposite (CSt-ZnO) was synthesized for the efficient removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous medium. The structure and morphology of CSt-ZnO nancomposite was characterized using SEM, FTIR, TGA, BET, XPS and zeta potential measurements. The effect of contact time, pH, temperature and initial concentration of Pb(II) on the adsorption was studied. The optimum parameters for maximum Pb(II) removal were time-120 min; pH-6; temperature-318 K and Co-20 ppm. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of CSt-ZnO nancomposite was 256.4 mg/g at 298 K. With increasing the temperature from 298 K to 318 K, the maximum adsorption quantity (qm) was improved from 256.4 to 476 mg/g which showed the endothermic nature of Pb(II) adsorption on CSt-ZnO nanocomposite. The sorption isotherm and kinetics model fitting studies, confirmed that data fit well to Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetics models, respectively. Thermodynamic studies inferred a spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption capacity was 68% even after four adsorption-desorption cycles which revealed the reusable performance of CSt-ZnO was well. The antimicrobial activity of CSt-ZnO nanocomposite was also examined against S. aureus and E. coli.

Abstract
Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized to obtain a new efficient adsorbent for diclofenac sodium (DF) removal. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were applied to characterize the prepared adsorbent. These analyses revealed that adsorbent was successfully prepared with average particle diameter of about 50 nm and a BET surface area of 168.09 m2/g. The saturation magnetization value of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was found to be 24.90 emu/g, thus, adsorbent was efficiently separated from the solution by a facile and rapid magnetic separation process. The effect of adsorption time, amount of adsorbent, initial pH of the solution, initial diclofenac concentration and temperature on the removal of DF were evaluated. Also, the adsorption data were best fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamics studies suggested spontaneous and exothermic adsorption. The maximum diclofenac adsorption amount of the synthesized nanoadsorbent was 52.91 mg/g, which is higher than many recently studied adsorbents.
