CoS2/GO nanocomposites for highly efficient and ppb level adsorption of Hg(II) from wastewater

Preparation of nanocellulose grafted molecularly imprinted polymer for selective adsorption Pb(II) and Hg(II)

Heavy metal pollution has become a major problem in environmental pollution. Ion imprinted polymers with specific identification and wide practicality have gradually become an important tool for wastewater treatment. In this work, ion-imprinted polymer-grafted modified nanocellulose was designed as an adsorbent for the serious hazard of Pb(II) and Hg(II) in wastewater. This work used medical cotton wool as raw material to prepare a nanocellulose suspension by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis. The high reactivity of carbonyl diimidazole (CDI) was utilized to react with acrylic acid (AA) to generate reactive intermediates, which then reacted with nanocellulose to form activated nanocellulose (AA-CDI-NC). Crown ether was used as functional monomers to synthesize Pb(II) ion-imprinted polymers and grafted onto the AA-CDI-NC surface (Pb(II)-MIP-NC). Meanwhile, Hg(II) ion-imprinted polymer was synthesized and grafted onto the AA-CDI-NC surface (Hg(II)-MIP-NC) using thymine as a functional monomer. The experimental results showed that Pb(II)-MIP-NC and Hg(II)-MIP-NC could effectively adsorb Pb(II) and Hg(II), respectively. Their adsorption behaviors for Pb(II) and Hg(II) were consistent with the secondary kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The adsorption capacities of Pb (II)-MIP-NC and Hg (II)-MIP-NC for Pb (II) and Hg (II) were 27.55 mg/g and 161.31, respectively.

Design and fabrication of chitosan cross-linked bismuth sulfide nanoparticles for sequestration of mercury in river water samples

The existence of heavy metals in ecological systems poses great threats to living organisms due to their toxicant and bio-accumulating properties. Mercury is a known toxicant with notable malignant impacts. It has long been known to cause toxic threats to the health of living organisms since the break out of Minamata disease. The turbulent expulsion of mercury-based pollutants from the industrial sector, requires a proper solution. Many attempts have been made to design a greener and more efficient route for a satisfactory removal of mercury. In the current study, bismuth sulfide nanoparticles (BiSNPs) have been synthesized via the co-precipitation method. The BiSNPs were supported with crosslinked chitosan to enhance their sorption capacity and avoid leaching. The average size of the BiSNPs was 42 nm based on SEM micrographs. The SEM analysis of the bismuth sulfide chitosan-crosslinked beads (BiS-CB) showed that the beads possessed a spherical and smooth morphology with a size of 1.02 mm. The FTIR analysis showed that the beads possessed the characteristics bands of imine groups of chitosan, bismuth, sulfur, and glycosidic linkages present in the molecules. The XRD analysis confirmed the phase crystallinity of the BiS-CB with an average crystallite size of 11 nm. The BiS-CB was employed for the sorption of mercury from water samples. The maximum sorption capacity of 65.51 mg/g was achieved at optimized conditions of pH 5, concentration 80 ppm, in 45 min at 30 °C. The mechanism studied for mercury removal showed that sorption followed the complexation mechanism according to the SHAB concept. In conclusion, the results showed that the BiS-CB sorbent exhibited an excellent sorption capacity to remove mercury.

Construction and Adsorption Performance Study of GO-CNT/Activated Carbon Composites for High Efficient Adsorption of Pollutants in Wastewater

Based on the increasing application requirements for the efficient adsorption of wastewater pollutants, graphene oxide-carbon nanotube/activated carbon (GO-CNT/AC) composites are constructed from the optimal microstructure matching of GO, CNTs, and AC materials by solution impregnation and freeze-drying methods. Three-dimensional structures with nano-micro hierarchical pores are established, with GO and CNTs uniformly dispersed on the AC surface, effectively restrain the agglomeration. The added CNTs played a "spring" role, supporting the gap between the GO sheets and AC matrix. Meanwhile, stable links are formed between GO, CNTs, and AC, realizing the synergistic matching of the microstructure, which provides abundant active absorption sites beneficial for improving the adsorption performance. The influences of the CNT contents, adsorbent amounts, methylene blue (MB) concentrations, and pH values on the adsorption property of GO-CNT/AC composites are systematically investigated. The results show that when the pH value of the MB solution is 13, the CNT concentration is 3 mg/mL and the MB concentration is 200 mg/L, the adsorption property of the composite is the best, with an adsorption capacity of 190.8 mg/g and a removal percentage of 95.4%. Compared with the raw AC, the adsorption capacity and removal percentage of the composites are increased by 73.9% and 72.8%, respectively. The GO-CNT/AC composites exhibit excellent cyclic adsorption performance, with a cyclic stability of 91.8% after six rounds of adsorption-desorption cycles. The kinetic analysis shows that the adsorption process conforms to the PSO kinetic model. By fitting of the IPD model, the adsorption mechanisms of the GO-CNT/AC composites are divided into two adsorption stages and described respectively. This study provides a new way to achieve highly efficient adsorption of pollutants in wastewater.

L-Cysteine functionalized graphene oxide nanoarchitectonics: A metal-free Hg2+ nanosensor with peroxidase-like activity boosted by competitive adsorption

Developing non-noble metal, even metal-free chemical sensors for the detection of toxic heavy metal ions is significantly desirable for economically and environmentally sustainable application but has heretofore remained elusive. Herein, a _L-cysteine functionalized graphene oxide nanosheet (CGO) nanoarchitectonics, greenly synthesized by a very simple method at room temperature, was utilized to realize the simultaneous enrichment and colorimetric detection of trace mercury ions (Hg²⁺). It was discovered that CGO, as a nanozyme mimic exhibited greatly enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity than the pristine graphene oxide. By exploring the interactions of CGO nanozyme with colorimetric substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and target Hg²⁺ ions, we found that the sensing principle was based mainly on the competitive adsorption between Hg²⁺ ions and TMB over CGO. The pre-capture of Hg²⁺ ions hindered the TMB binding on CGO, resulting in the promoted oxidation of TMB by H₂O₂ to produce more colored oxidation products, from which the colorimetric sensing of Hg²⁺ was realized with a good detection effect on 5 μg L^-1 solution. As an enrichment-sensing integration platform, this metal-free sensor is cost-effective and sensitive, and presents considerable anti-interference ability over other metal ions. Overall, this work not only expands the application of graphene-based materials in colorimetric detection but also provides a general sensing principle to construct highly sensitive sensors.

Aqueous Adsorption of Heavy Metals on Metal Sulfide Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Application

Heavy metals pollution of aqueous solutions generates considerable concerns as they adversely impact the environment and health of humans. Among the remediation technologies, adsorption with metal sulfide nanomaterials has proven to be a promising strategy due to their cost-effective, environmentally friendly, surface modulational, and amenable properties. Their excellent adsorption characteristics are attributed to the inherently exposed sulfur atoms that interact with heavy metals through various processes. This work presents a comprehensive overview of the sequestration of heavy metals from water using metal sulfide nanomaterials. The common methods of synthesis, the structures, and the supports for metal sulfide nano-adsorbents are accentuated. The adsorption mechanisms and governing conditions and parameters are stressed. Practical heavy metal remediation application in aqueous media using metal sulfide nanomaterials is highlighted, and the existing research gaps are underscored.
