Performance of new synthesized emulsifiers in ecofriendly metal cutting fluid formulations

This study aims to prepare mono and gemini nonionic emulsifiers differing in HLB to utilize in formulated metal cutting fluids. Also, the cationic gemini surfactant (GCS) was prepared and applied as a corrosion inhibitor and biocide in the formulations. FT-IR and NMR confirmed the chemical structure of the prepared compounds. Different oil package formulations were prepared by adding different trial concentrations of the additives (emulsifier, corrosion inhibitor, coupling agent, and biocide) to the eco-friendly vegetable oil (castor oil). Standard procedures were performed to assess the stability of the formulated base oil packages. Six Formulas demonstrated the greatest oil stability. Oil in water emulsions with varying formulated oil ratios (5-15 wt%) were prepared. A standard test was carried out to evaluate their performance as emulsion stability. It's been demonstrated that Formulas II and V produced stable emulsions. The wettability alteration of formulas II and V on different metal surfaces was evaluated. The droplet size of formulated castor oil in water was determined via DLS. Corrosion test and tribological properties were also performed. The findings of this study indicate that Formula V is a good choice as a renewable addition for enhancing a variety of performance characteristics of the water-based cutting fluid.

Electrochemical Investigation of C-Steel Corrosion Inhibition, In Silico, and Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Investigations Using Pyrazole Derivatives

The inhibitory impact of the two synthesized pyrazole derivatives (3 and 4) toward metallic and microbial corrosion was investigated. Using open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, it was possible to determine their ability to prevent the corrosion of C-steel in 1 M HCl, which was significantly enhanced with increasing concentration (ex. 93%). They act as mixed-type inhibitors, according to polarization curves. The compounds under investigation were adsorbed on a C-steel surface in 1 M HCl following the Langmuir isotherm model. The double-layer capacitance was decreased, and the charge transfer resistance (Rct) was raised due to the examined inhibitors' adsorption. Investigating changes in the surface morphology and confirming the corrosion inhibition mechanism are done using scanning electron microscopy. Density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations were also conducted to show the adsorption affinity of the understudied compounds over the steel substrate in neutral and protonated forms. Furthermore, the antimicrobial performance of the two synthesized pyrazoles against sulfate-reducing bacteria was evaluated, and the recorded inhibition efficiency was 100%. The current research shows important developments in producing highly effective anticorrosion and antimicrobial pyrazole derivatives.

Newly Synthesized Morpholinyl Mannich Bases as Corrosion Inhibitors for N80 Steel in Acid Environment

New Mannich bases, 3-morpholino-1-phenylpropan-1-one (MPO) and 3-morpholino-1-phenyl-3-(pyridin-4-yl) propan-1-one (MPPO), were synthesized, characterized, and studied as corrosion inhibitors for N80 steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing inhibitor concentrations, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the MPO and MPPO could reach 90.3% and 91.4%, respectively, at a concentration of 300 ppm at 305 K. The effect of the temperature on the corrosion inhibition behavior of inhibitors was discussed. Electrochemical tests showed that the synthesized inhibitors are mixed. The EIS test results showed that the presence of MPO and MPPO reduced the double-layer capacitance in the corrosion process, thereby reducing the charge transfer resistance. The SEM and EDX results showed that the MPO and MPPO formed a uniform adsorption film on the surface of the N80 steel. The adsorption mechanism of the inhibitors was simulated with different adsorption models and the results showed that the inhibitors were the chemisorbed type. The results of the FT-IR spectroscopy proved that the inhibitor interacted with metal atoms on the steel surface.
