Dynamic spreading of a water nanodroplet on a nanostructured surface in the presence of an electric field

Dynamical behaviors of nanodroplets impinging on solid surfaces in the presence of electric fields

The collision of droplets with solid surfaces is a common phenomenon in nature. However, droplets exhibit interesting motion states when captured by surfaces. This work investigates the dynamical behavior and the wetting condition of droplets captured by different surfaces in electric fields via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. By adjusting the initial velocity of droplets (V₀), electric field intensity (E) and directions, the spreading and wetting properties of droplets are analyzed systematically. The results indicate that the electric stretching effect occurs when a droplet strikes the solid surface in electric fields and the stretch length (h_t) of droplets continuously increases with the enhancement of E. In the low field strength regime, the direction of electric fields has an effect on h_t: the value of h_t is larger in the case of positive electric fields as compared to negative electric fields. In the high field strength regime, the direction of electric fields makes no difference to h_t: the droplet is stretched observably, and the breakdown voltage U is calculated to be 0.57 V nm^-1 under both positive and negative electric fields. Droplets impacting with surfaces at initial velocities display various states. The droplet bounces off the surface regardless of the direction of electric field at V₀ ≥ 1.4 nm ps^-1. The maximum spreading factor β_max and h_t both increase with V₀ and are not affected by field directions. The simulation results are consistent with experiments, and the relationships between E, β_max, h_t and V₀ are proposed, which provide the theoretical basis for large-scale numerical calculations such as computational fluid dynamics.

Confinement Dynamics of Nanodroplets between Two Surfaces: Effects of Wettability and Electric Field

The electrowetting effect and related applications of tiny droplets have aroused widespread research interest. In this work, we report molecular dynamics simulations of confinement dynamics of nanodroplets under different droplet-surface interactions and surface distances under an external electric field. So far, the effect of the surface-droplet interactions on electric field-induced dynamics behaviors of droplets in confined spaces has not been extensively studied. Our results show that in the absence of electric field there is a critical value of surface wettability for the shape transition of droplets. Above this value, the droplet is divided into small droplets adhered on the bottom and top surfaces; below this value, the droplets are detached from the surfaces. When an external electric field is applied parallel to the surfaces, the droplet spreads on the surface along the direction of the electric field. It was found that the surface separation significantly influences the transition of the droplet shape. The steady morphology of the droplets under the electric field depends on the surface-droplet interaction and surface separation. We explore the underlying mechanism causing the morphological transition through analyzing the molecular interactions, the number of interracial molecules and the interaction force between the droplets and surfaces. These results provide basic insights into the molecular interactions of nanodroplets under different confined environments, and clues for applications of confined nanodroplets under the control of electric field.

Molecular Investigation of the Actuation of Electrowetted Nanodroplets

It is well known that the wettability of a droplet on a solid substrate can be modified by the application of an electric field. The phenomenon of electrowetting along with the associated physics of droplet shape change and dynamics has traditionally been studied at the micro-scale leading to exciting applications. The present work is undertaken to explore the physics of electrowetting actuation of droplet movement at the molecular level. Molecular simulations are performed to obtain the dynamic spreading of the droplet under the action of a radially symmetric electric field on a silica substrate. The dynamic behavior of the contact diameter is found to be qualitatively similar to that observed at the laboratory scale. Further simulations of droplet actuation across an array of electrodes illustrated the dynamics of the center of mass, which is then used to estimate the contact line friction and compared with the predictions from a reduced-order model. A scaling analysis is used to probe the physics of the problem correlating the contact line friction coefficient and the droplet velocity after actuation. The results and understanding elicited from the fundamental approach have the potential to guide the development of quick and precise control of nano-sized droplets and may prove to be pivotal in the development of future nanofluidic systems, nanomanufacturing methodologies, and high-resolution optoelectronic devices.

Permeation by Electrowetting Actuation: Revealing the Prospect of a Micro-valve Based on Ionic Liquid

The electrowetting behavior of ionic liquid significantly promotes microfluidic technology due to the advantage of manipulation of ionic liquid without additional mechanical parts. Recently, a novel micro-valve that shows good prospects was proposed by MacArthur et al. based on the permeation of ionic liquid under electric field. Inspired by their work, the permeation process of ionic liquid (EMIM-Im) droplets actuated by electrowetting was investigated in this work using molecular dynamics simulation. The wettability of substrate, electric field strength and electric field polarity were varied to investigate their influences. On the substrate side, results showed that the hydrophilic substrates tend to stretch and adsorb the droplet and hence hinder the permeation process, whereas the hydrophobic substrates facilitate permeation due to their low attraction for liquid. Particularly, super hydrophilic substrates should be avoided in practice, because their strong adsorption effects will override the electric field effects and disable the permeation process. On the electric field side, results showed that increased electric field strength enhances the permeation, but varying electric field polarity will result in an asymmetric permeation behavior, which was found to be the result of the different evaporation rate of the ion species that ultimately caused a non-charge-neutral droplet. Our investigation then uncovered the two critical roles of the electric field: elongating the droplet and providing the driving force for the permeation.
