Photoinduced electron transfer reactions in mixed micelles of a star block copolymer and surface active ionic liquids: Role of the anion

Solubility and Stability of Carotenoids in Ammonium- and Phosphonium-Based Ionic Liquids: Effect of Solvent Nature, Temperature and Water

Ionic liquids (ILs) have arisen as alternatives to organic solvents and been used in natural pigment extraction in recent decades. However, the solubility and stability of carotenoids in phosphonium- and ammonium-based ILs are insufficiently explored. In this work, the physicochemical properties of the ILs, and the dissolution behavior and storage stability of three carotenoids (astaxanthin, β-carotene, and lutein) in the IL aqueous solution were investigated. The results showed that the solubility of the carotenoids in the acidic IL solution is higher than that in the alkaline IL solution, and the optimal pH is about 6. The solubility of astaxanthin (40 mg/100 g), β-carotene (105 mg/100 g), and lutein (5250 mg/100 g) was the highest in tributyloctylphosphonium chloride ([P₄₄₄₈]Cl) due to the van der Waals forces with [P₄₄₄₈]⁺ and hydrogen bonding with Cl^-. A high temperature was beneficial to improve the solubility, but it can reduce the storage stability. Water has no significant effect on the carotenoid stability, but a high water content decreases the carotenoid solubility. A IL water content of 10-20%, an extraction temperature of 338.15 K, and a storage temperature of less than 298.15 K are beneficial for reducing the IL viscosity, improving carotenoid solubility, and maintaining good stability. Moreover, a linear correlation was found between the color parameters and carotenoid contents. This study provides some guidance for screening suitable solvents for carotenoid extraction and storage.

Ionic Liquids Mediated Micellization of Pluronic Copolymers: Aggregation Behavior of Amphiphilic Triblock Copolymers

Understanding the micellization of amphiphilic triblock copolymers, especially Pluronics can play a persuasive role in engineering "smart" formulations for drug delivery applications. Their underlying self-assembly in the presence of designer solvents such as ionic liquids (ILs) provides combinatorial benefits of unique munificent properties of ILs and copolymers. The complex molecular interactions in the Pluronic copolymers/ILs mixed system influence the aggregation mechanism of copolymers depending on various aspects with no standardized factors to govern the structure-property relationship, which led to the practical applications. Here, we summarized recent progress in understanding the micellization process of IL-Pluronic mixed systems. Special emphasis was given to pure Pluronic systems (i.e., PEO-PPO-PEO) without any structural modifications, such as copolymerization with other functional groups, and ILs having cholinium and imidazolium groups. We expect that the correlation between existing/developing experimental and theoretical studies will provide the necessary basis and impetus for successful utilization in drug delivery applications.

Fate of Photoinduced Electron Transfer Reactions with Temperature- and pH-Induced Assembly/Disassembly of Star Block Copolymer Micelles

The assembly/disassembly of star block copolymers induced by changes in temperature or pH of the medium is anticipated to have interesting implications for hosting/releasing drugs and tuning chemical reactions. This study investigates the possibility of employing the dually sensitive self-assembly of an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide star block copolymer, Tetronic T904, to influence photoinduced electron transfer (ET) reactions, on switching from the assembled state (micelle) when temperature is above the critical micelle temperature (CMT) and pH of the medium is above the pK_a of T904 to the dissociated (unimer) state when either the temperature is below the CMT or the polymer is protonated. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence techniques have been used to characterize the microenvironments of the reactants in T904 solutions under different temperature and pH conditions and to determine ET rate constants. Interestingly, the bimolecular ET rate constants in both assembled and disassembled states of T904 depict a bell-shaped correlation with the driving force of the reaction, in accordance with Marcus inversion behavior instead of the usual Rehm-Weller behavior seen in conventional solvents. The assembly/disassembly of T904 stimulated by temperature or pH affects the micropolarity in the reactant environment, the magnitude of ET rate constants, and the position of inversion on the exergonicity scale.
