Exploring the structural and transport properties of glyceline DES-Based boron nitride nanotube Nanofluid: The effects of nanotube diameter

Liquid Structures and Diffusion Dynamics of Alkyl-Pyrene Liquids Studied by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Functional molecular liquids (FMLs) based on alkylated π-conjugated molecules have attracted attention as solvent-free and nonvolatile liquid materials with prominent optoelectronic features. Recently, novel FML compounds containing pyrene as the functional core were synthesized, and their rheological and photochemical properties were investigated. Although the molecules differ only in the number of alkyl chain substituents and their substitution positions, their viscosity coefficients are largely different beyond the Stokes-Einstein relation on the assumption of identical microscopic friction, indicating that local microscopic molecular interactions are crucial for the macroscopic rheological properties. Here, we report a theoretical study on the rheological properties of the alkyl-pyrene liquids by means of atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We performed long-time MD simulations for tens of microseconds to obtain ample statistical samples of the alkyl-pyrene liquids and analyzed their liquid structures and diffusion dynamics based on spatiotemporal correlation functions. We found the formation of characteristic local liquid structures of π-π stacking of the pyrene moieties and locally anisotropic and anomalous diffusion dynamics, which remarkably vary depending on the alkyl substituent patterns. The present results provide an atomistic insight into the macroscopic rheological properties of alkyl-π FMLs and molecular design strategy for them.

Intermolecular Interactions of Edaravone in Aqueous Solutions of Ethaline and Glyceline Inferred from Experiments and Quantum Chemistry Computations

Edaravone, acting as a cerebral protective agent, is administered to treat acute brain infarction. Its poor solubility is addressed here by means of optimizing the composition of the aqueous choline chloride (ChCl)-based eutectic solvents prepared with ethylene glycol (EG) or glycerol (GL) in the three different designed solvents compositions. The slurry method was used for spectroscopic solubility determination in temperatures between 298.15 K and 313.15 K. Measurements confirmed that ethaline (ETA = ChCl:EG = 1:2) and glyceline (GLE = ChCl:GL = 1:2) are very effective solvents for edaravone. The solubility at 298.15 K in the optimal compositions was found to be equal x_E = 0.158 (c_E = 302.96 mg/mL) and x_E = 0.105 (c_E = 191.06 mg/mL) for glyceline and ethaline, respectively. In addition, it was documented that wetting of neat eutectic mixtures increases edaravone solubility which is a fortunate circumstance not only from the perspective of a solubility advantage but also addresses high hygroscopicity of eutectic mixtures. The aqueous mixture with 0.6 mole fraction of the optimal composition yielded solubility values at 298.15 K equal to x_E = 0.193 (c_E = 459.69 mg/mL) and x_E = 0.145 (c_E = 344.22 mg/mL) for glyceline and ethaline, respectively. Since GLE is a pharmaceutically acceptable solvent, it is possible to consider this as a potential new liquid form of this drug with a tunable dosage. In fact, the recommended amount of edaravone administered to patients can be easily achieved using the studied systems. The observed high solubility is interpreted in terms of intermolecular interactions computed using the Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) approach and corrected for accounting of electron correlation, zero-point vibrational energy and basis set superposition errors. Extensive conformational search allowed for identifying the most probable contacts, the thermodynamic and geometric features of which were collected and discussed. It was documented that edaravone can form stable dimers stabilized via stacking interactions between five-membered heterocyclic rings. In addition, edaravone can act as a hydrogen bond acceptor with all components of the studied systems with the highest affinities to ion pairs of ETA and GLE. Finally, the linear regression model was formulated, which can accurately estimate edaravone solubility utilizing molecular descriptors obtained from COSMO-RS computations. This enables the screening of new eutectic solvents for finding greener replacers of designed solvents. The theoretical analysis of tautomeric equilibria confirmed that keto-isomer edaravone is predominant in the bulk liquid phase of all considered deep eutectic solvents (DES).

Ternary CE2Ba2 (E = As, Sb) Clusters: New Pentaatomic Planar Tetracoordinate Carbon Species with 18 Valence Electrons

18-valence-electron (ve) rule is one important guide for us to design planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) species. Using the "polarization of ligands" strategy, the new pentaatomic ptC species CE₂Ba₂ (E = As, Sb) with 18 ve are designed in this work. Computer structural searches and high-level calculations reveal that the ptC CE₂Ba₂ (E = As, Sb) species are global minima (GMs) on the potential energy surfaces, whose C center is coordinated by the interspaced E and Ba atoms. CE₂Ba₂ (E = As, Sb) are also kinetically stable. Chemical bonding analyses reveal that the ptC core is stabilized by two localized C-E σ bonds, one delocalized five-center two-electron (5c-2e) σ bond and one delocalized 5c-2e π bond. One π and three σ bonds collectively conform to the 8-electron counting, which determines the stability of ptC CE₂Ba₂ (E = As, Sb) species. Interestingly, the delocalized 2π and 2σ electrons render the ptC systems π/σ double aromaticity. Additional 10 electrons contribute to peripheral lone pairs of E and E-Ba bonding.

Adsorption and Sensing Performances of Pristine and Au-Decorated Gallium Nitride Monolayer to Noxious Gas Molecules: A DFT Investigation

In this study, the adsorption of noxious gas molecules (NO, Cl₂, and O₃) on GaN and Au-decorated GaN was systematically scrutinized, and the adsorption energy, bond length, charge, density of state (DOS), partial density of state (PDOS), electron deformation density (EDD), and orbitals were analyzed by the density functional theory (DFT) method. It is found that the interaction between NO and pristine GaN is physical adsorption, while GaN chemically reacts with Cl₂ and O₃. These observations suggest that pristine GaN may be a candidate for the detection of Cl₂ and O₃. The highly activated Au-decorated GaN can enhance the adsorption performance toward NO and convert the physical adsorption for NO into chemical adsorption, explaining the fact that precious metal doping is essential for regulating the electronic properties of the substrate material. This further confirms the well-established role of Au-decorated GaN in NO gas-sensing applications. In addition, the adsorption performance of Au-decorated GaN for Cl₂ and O₃ molecules is highly improved, which provides guidance to scavenge toxic gases such as Cl₂ and O₃ by the Au-decorated GaN material.

Insights on choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (reline) + primary alcohol mixtures: a molecular dynamics simulation study

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) emerged as green solvents for new generation technologies owing to their high chemical and thermal stability. Addition of restricted amount of organic solvents into the DESs plays a significant role in the improvement of thermodynamic and the transport properties to work as a potential solvent in process industries. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to understand the thermophysical and transport properties of choline chloride-based DES (reline) and primary alcohol (methanol and ethanol) mixture in relation to microscopic structure. Density, radial distribution function, coordination number, average number of H-bond, diffusion coefficient and spatial distribution function was calculated in order to understand the structure and involvement of H-bond network at an atomic level. H-bond and spatial distribution function analyses revealed that the chloride ion prefers to be spatially distributed around hydroxyl group of alcohol and found to be more pronounced upon increase in alcohol concentration. As a consequence, it was observed that the H-bonds between Cl^- and urea decreases overall with the loading of alcohol and effect is more pronounced beyond a concentration of 0.4. Self-diffusion values for choline, Cl^- and urea were found to be increased significantly upon increase in concentration of alcohol from 0.6 to 0.8. Overall, our simulation points to the interplay and interactions between the chloride ions and the solvents in determining the structural and transport properties of choline chloride-based DES.
