A molecular dynamics investigation of La3+ and Lu3+-ligand speciation in aqueous solution

Experimental evidence reveals the mobilization and mineralization processes of rare earth elements in carbonatites

Whereas the genesis of carbonatitic rare earth element (REE) deposits has long been a focus of study, the controls on mobilization and mineralization of REEs during magmatic-hydrothermal processes still remain open to debate. Here, we present our investigation of the dissolution and crystallization of REE (fluor)carbonate minerals in alkaline carbonate brine-melts up to 850°C and 11.6 kbar. Our results show that REEs are soluble in Na2CO3 brine-melts, achieving concentrations exceeding 8 weight % at temperatures above 650°C. The addition of calcium and/or fluoride has minimal impact on REE mobilization, whereas introduction of silica suppresses REE solubilities by half, due to britholite formation above 550°C. Upon cooling, sodium and REEs combine to crystallize in burbankite or carbocernaite in sodium-enriched brine-melts, even at fluoride saturation. However, while the brine-melts contain substantial ferro- or aluminosilicate, REE mineralization in fluorcarbonates occurs after sufficient sodium precipitation in alkaline silicate minerals, hence revealing how silicate and sodium carbonate govern REE mineralization.

Speciation of La3+-Cl- Complexes in Hydrothermal Fluids from Deep Potential Molecular Dynamics

The stability of rare earth element (REE) complexes plays a crucial role in quantitatively assessing their hydrothermal migration and transformation. However, reliable data are lacking under high-temperature hydrothermal conditions, which hampers our understanding of the association behavior of REE. Here a deep learning potential model for the LaCl3-H2O system in hydrothermal fluids is developed based on the first-principles density functional theory calculations. The model accurately predicts the radial distribution functions compared to ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. Furthermore, species of La-Cl complexes, the dissociation pathway of the La-Cl complexes dissociation process, and the potential of mean forces and corresponding association constants (logK) for LaCln3-n (n = 1-4) are extensively investigated under a wide range of temperatures and pressures. Empirical density models for logK calculation are fitted with these data and can accurately predict logK data from both experimental results and AIMD simulations. The distribution of La-Cl species is also evaluated across a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and initial chloride concentration conditions. The results show that La-Cl complexes are prone to forming in a low-density solution, and the number of bonded Cl- ions increases with rising temperature. In contrast, in a high-density solution, La3+ dominates and becomes the more prevalent species.

Chemical bonding of HF, HCl, and H 2 O onto YF 3 surfaces: Quantification by first principles

The surfaces of waimirite β- YF 3 have been studied for their fluorine and chlorine versus water affinity. Bonding patterns of HF, HCl, and H 2 O chemically adsorbed onto surfaces of (010), (100), (011), and (101) have been quantified by density functional theory applying energy decomposition analysis. We found that the adsorption of H 2 O is dominated by about 65% of electrostatics, which causes a low surface sensitivity and weak interactions. On the contrary, the adsorptions of HF and HCl are driven by strong hydrogen bonds resulting in a highly surface-dependent ratio of 30-60% electrostatic versus orbital contribution. Among the stoichiometric surfaces, the shortest and strongest hydrogen bonds and consequently most covalent bonding patterns are found within YF 3 · HCl. However, when including the preparation energy, each surface favors the adsorption of HF over HCl, which reproduces the higher affinity of yttrium towards fluoride over chloride, previously known for solutions, also for the solid state.
