Non-invasive glucose determination in the human eye

Selective colorimetric urine glucose detection by paper sensor functionalized with polyaniline nanoparticles and cell membrane

For the diabetes diagnosis, noninvasive methods are preferred to invasive methods; urine glucose measurement is an example of a noninvasive method. However, conventional noninvasive methods for urine glucose measurement are not intuitive. Furthermore, such methods exhibit low selectivity because they can detect interfering molecules in addition to glucose. Herein, we fabricate a noninvasive, intuitive, and highly selective paper sensor consisting of polyaniline nanoparticles (PAni-NPs) and red blood cell membranes (RBCMs). The PAni-NPs (adsorbed on the paper) are highly sensitive to hydrogen ions and change color from emeraldine blue to emeraldine green within a few seconds. The RBCM (coated on the PAni-NP-adsorbed paper) having the glucose transporter-1 protein plays the role of a smart filter that transports glucose but rejects other interfering molecules. In particular, the selectivity of the RBCM-coated PAni-NP-based paper sensor was approximately improved ∼85%, compared to the uncoated paper sensors. The paper sensor could detect urine glucose over the range of 0-10 mg/mL (0-56 mM), with a limit of detection of 0.54 mM. The proposed paper sensor will facilitate the development of a highly selective and colorimetric urine glucose monitoring system.

Non-invasive glucose monitoring technology in diabetes management: a review

The frequent monitoring of glucose is an essential part of diabetes management. Despite the fact that almost all the commercially successful blood glucose monitoring devices are invasive, there is an immense need to develop non-invasive glucose monitoring (NGM) devices that will alleviate the pain and suffering of diabetics associated with the frequent pricking of skin for taking the blood sample for glucose testing. There have been numerous developments in the field of NGM during the last decade, which stress the need for a critical review. This manuscript aims to review the various NGM techniques and devices. The challenges and future trends in NGM are also discussed.

Combined optical intensity and polarization methodology for analyte concentration determination in simulated optically clear and turbid biological media

The use of a combined spectral intensity and polarization signals optically scattered by tissue to determine analyte concentration in optically clear and turbid biological media was explored in a simulation study. Blood plasma was chosen as the biological model and glucose as the analyte of interest. The absorption spectrum and optical rotatory dispersion were modeled using experimental data and the Drude's equation, respectively, between 500 and 2000 nm. A polarization-sensitive Monte Carlo light-propagation model was used to simulate scattering media. Unfold partial least squares and multiblock partial least squares were used as regression methods to combine the spectral intensity and polarization signals, and to predict glucose concentrations in both clear and scattering models. The results show that the combined approaches produce better predictive results in both clear and scattering media than conventional partial least squares analysis, which uses intensity or polarization spectra independently. This improvement was somewhat diminished with the addition of scattering to the model, since the polarization signals were reduced due to multiple scattering. These findings demonstrate promise for the combined approach in clear or moderately scattering biological media; however, the method's applicability to highly scattering tissues is yet to be determined. The methodology also requires experimental validation.

Current development in non-invasive glucose monitoring

Painless control of blood glycemic levels could improve life quality of diabetes patients, enabling a better regulation of hyper- and hypoglycaemia episodes and thereby avoiding physiological complications. Although research groups have been trying for decades to separate non-invasive glucose information from interference compounds, none of the available commercial devices offers enough precision to replace lancet approaches. Many reviews have already been published on this topic, but the great amount of information available and the fast development of technologies require a continuous update in the research status. Besides the description of current in-vivo methods and the analysis of devices available commercially, one also explains treatment algorithms useful for multivariate analysis.
