Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis and single crystal X-ray structure of Cu(II)-picolinic acid complex, 1 as a potent topoisomerase I inhibitor. The complex 1 crystallized in the triclinic crystal system with space group P-1. Comparative in vitro binding studies of complex 1 with CT DNA and tRNA were carried out revealing an electrostatic binding mode with higher binding propensity towards tRNA. The intrinsic bonding constant value, Kb was calculated to be 4.36 × 104 and 8.78 × 104 M-1 with CT DNA and tRNA respectively. DNA cleavage activity was carried out with a pBR322 plasmid DNA substrate to ascertain the cleaving ability. Furthermore, Topo-I inhibition assay of complex 1, performed via gel electrophoresis revealed a significant inhibitory effect on the enzyme catalytic activity at a minimum concentration of 15 µM. The DFT studies were carried out to provide better insight in the electronic transitions observed in the absorption spectrum of the complex 1. Molecular docking studies were carried out with DNA, RNA and Topo-I to determine the specific binding preferences at the target site and complement the spectroscopic studies. The antimicrobial potential of complex 1 was screened against E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis and C. albicans; and compared with doxycycline, exhibiting an excellent maximum zone of inhibition of 28 mm against E. coli.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Crystal structure of the synthesized copper(II) complex with 6-methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid, [Cu(6-Mepic)2·H2O]·H2O, was determined by XRD, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, the geometry optimization, harmonic vibration frequencies for the Cu(II) complex were carried out by using Density Functional Theory calculations with HSEh1PBE/6-311G(d,p)/LanL2DZ level. Electronic absorption wavelengths were obtained by using TD-DFT/HSEh1PBE/6-311G(d,p)/LanL2DZ level with CPCM model and major contributions were determined via Swizard/Chemissian program. Additionally, the refractive index, linear optical (LO) and non-nonlinear optical (NLO) parameters of the Cu(II) complex were calculated at HSEh1PBE/6-311G(d,p) level. The experimental and computed small energy gap shows the charge transfer in the Cu(II) complex. Finally, the hyperconjugative interactions and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) were studied by performing of natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis.

Abstract
The cobalt(II) complex of 2-picolinic acid (Hpic), namely, [Co(pic)₂(H₂O)₂] · 2H₂O, was synthesized with the reaction of cobalt acetate and 2-picolinic acid as the reactants by solid-solid reaction at room temperature. The composition and structure of the complex were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The crystal structure of the complex belongs to monoclinic system and space group P2(1)/n, with cell parameters of a = 9.8468(7) Å, b = 5.2013(4) Å, c = 14.6041(15) Å, β = 111.745(6)°, V = 747.96(11) ų, Z = 2, D(c) = 1.666 g cm⁻³, R₁ = 0.0297, and wR₂ = 0.0831. In the title complex, the Co(II) ion is six-coordinated by two pyridine N atoms and two carboxyl O atoms from two 2-picolinic acid anions, and two O atoms from two H2O molecules, and forming a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. The thermal decomposition processes of the complex under nitrogen include dehydration and pyrolysis of the ligand, and the final residue is cobalt oxalate at about 450°C.

Abstract
Two cobalt(II) complexes with 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (3-hydroxypyridine-2-carboxylic acid, 3-OHpicH), trans-[Co(3-OHpic)2(py)2] (2) and cis-[Co(3-OHpic)2(4-pic)2] (3) (py=pyridine; 4-pic=4-picoline or 4-methylpyridine), previously synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, are here studied by Raman and mid-infrared spectroscopy with the help from the corresponding DFT vibrational calculations using B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) computational model. Intramolecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond appears in both complexes 2 and 3, while weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds assemble molecules of 2 or 3 into 3D architecture. A complete presentation of all Raman, infrared and theoretical results is given for complex 3. The measured spectra are shown, relative intensities and bandwidths are discussed and the assignment of vibrational bands is given on the basis of the DFT calculations. The calculated spectra agree very well with the presented experimental findings, thanks to the suitable grouping of modes. The same vibrational calculations also reveal insignificant influence of H→CH3 substitution for the spectroscopic characterization of the complex. A careful study of differences between calculated and observed wavenumbers suggests that modified single-factor scaling is actually better than the classic multi-factor scaling approach.
