Crystal structures, magnetic and photoluminescent properties of one-dimensional lanthanide complexes with picolinate ligand

Probing the Difference in the Complexation of Trivalent Actinides and Lanthanides with a Tridentate N,O-Hybrid Ligand: Spectroscopy, Thermodynamics, and Coordination Modes

Comparatively revealing the complexation behavior of trivalent actinides and lanthanides with functional ligands in aqueous solution is of great importance to enrich our knowledge on the fundamental coordination chemistry of trivalent f-block elements and to control the fate of minor actinides in nuclear fuel cycles. In this work, the complexation of Am(III) and Nd(III), representatives for trivalent actinides and lanthanides, respectively, with a N,O-hybrid ligand 6-(dimethylcarbamoyl)picolinic acid (DMAPA, denoted as HL) was investigated by absorption spectroscopy, calorimetry, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Successive formation of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 (metal/ligand) complexes of Am(III) and Nd(III) with DMAPA was identified, and the corresponding thermodynamic parameters were determined. The binding strength of Am(III) with DMAPA is slightly stronger than that of Nd(III), and the complexation of Nd(III) with DMAPA is mainly entropy-driven. The crystal structure of the 1:2 Nd(III)/DMAPA complex and the DFT calculation shed additional light on the coordination and structural characteristics of the complexes. In contrast to the Nd-N bond in the Nd(III)/DMAPA complex, the Am-N bond in the Am(III)/DMAPA complex exhibits more covalency, which contributes to the slightly stronger complexation of Am(III) with DMAPA.

Chemical sensors based on a Eu(iii)-centered periodic mesoporous organosilica hybrid material using picolinic acid as an efficient secondary ligand

Through a series of post synthetic modification methods applied to the 100% trans ethenylene-bridged Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica (ePMO), the lanthanide-functionalized hybrid nanomaterial ePMO@Eu_PA (PA = picolinic acid) has been prepared. The pristine and lanthanide-grafted ePMO materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, DRIFTs, TGA, N₂ sorption, SEM and TEM. The selected PA ligand could effectively sensitize the Eu³⁺ ion, leading to the characteristic luminescence of Eu³⁺ in ePMO@Eu_PA. The luminescence properties of the ePMO@Eu_PA were studied in detail in the solid state and after dispersing in water. The material was investigated for the use as ion sensor and showed a selective monitoring of Fe³⁺, Co₂⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions with luminescence quenching. In addition, the material showed a linear relationship between the luminescence intensity and the pH value in the pH range from 7.7 to 10.2. These findings demonstrate that ePMO@Eu_PA possesses potential practical applications in ion sensing as well as in pH sensing.

New highly luminescent hybrid materials: terbium pyridine-picolinate covalently grafted on kaolinite

Luminescent hybrid materials derived from kaolinite appear as promising materials for optical applications due to their specific properties. The spectroscopic behavior of terbium picolinate complexes covalently grafted on kaolinite and the influence of the secondary ligand and thermal treatment on luminescence are reported. The resulting materials were characterized by thermal analysis, element analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. The thermogravimetric curves indicated an enhancement in the thermal stability up to 300 °C for the lanthanide complexes covalently grafted on kaolinite, with respect to the isolated complexes. The increase in the basal spacing observed by X-ray diffraction confirmed the insertion of the organic ligands into the basal space of kaolinite, involving the formation of a bond between Al-OH and the carboxylate groups, as evidenced by infrared spectroscopy. The luminescent hybrid material exhibited a stronger characteristic emission of Tb(3+) compared to the isolated complex. The excitation spectra displayed a broad band at 277 nm, assigned to a ligand-to-metal charge transfer, while the emission spectra presented bands related to the electronic transitions characteristic of the Tb(3+) ion from the excited state (5)D(4) to the states (7)F(J) (J=5, 4, and 3), with the 4→5 transition having high intensity with green emission.

A series of lanthanide-organic polymers incorporating nitrogen-heterocyclic and aliphatic carboxylate mixed-ligands: structures, luminescent and magnetic properties

Seven new lanthanide-organic coordination polymers incorporating both nitrogen heterocyclic dicarboxylate and various auxiliary ligands, {[Ln(3)(Hpimda)(4)(mu(2)-HCOO).5H(2)O].H(2)O}(n)} Ln = Sm (1), Ln = Eu (2), Ln = Gd (3), Ln = Dy (4), Ln = Ho (5), {[Ce(2)(Hpimda)(2)(mu(4)-C(2)O(4)).8H(2)O].2H(2)O}(n) (6), {[Yb(2)(pyda)(mu(4)-C(2)O(4))(2).4H(2)O].3H(2)O}(n) (7) (H(3)pimda = 1H-2-propyl-4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid, H(2)pyda = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) have been fabricated successfully and characterized systematically. Complexes 1-5 are isomorphous and isostructural, and are built from two-dimensional (2-D) double-decker networks based on the tetranuclear basic carboxylate as a secondary building unit (SBU). Both polymers 6 and 7 feature a (3,4)-connected 3-D framework consisting of 2-D lanthanide-organic hexagonal grids, which are further interlinked via the mu(4)-oxalate ligand. The results of magnetic determination show the same end-to-end bridging fashion of formate group results in different magnetic properties occurring between lanthanide centers. The luminescence emission spectra of the complexes vary depending on the lanthanide ion present.
