Abstract
Drug-loaded polymeric micelles have proven to be highly effective carrier systems for the efficient delivery of hydrophobic photosensitizers (PSs) in photodynamic therapy (PDT). This study introduces the micellization potential of poly(oligoethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate) (pOEGMA) as a novel approach, utilizing the hydrophobic methacrylate segments of pOEGMA to interact with highly hydrophobic zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc), thereby forming a potential micellar drug carrier system. The ZnPc molecule was synthesized from phthalonitrile derivatives and its fluorescence, photodegradation, and singlet oxygen quantum yields were determined in various solvents. In solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, dimethyl sulfoxide, and N,N-dimethylformamide, the ZnPc compound exhibited the requisite photophysical and photochemical properties for PDT applications. The pOEGMA homopolymer was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization, while ZnPc-loaded pOEGMA micelles were prepared using the nanoprecipitation method. Characterization of the pOEGMA, ZnPc, and micelles was conducted using FTIR,1H-NMR, dynamic light scattering, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometries, gel permeation chromatography, and transmission electron microscopy. The critical micelle concentration was determined to be 0.027 mg ml-1using fluorescence spectrometry. The drug loading and encapsulation efficiencies of the ZnPc-loaded micelles were calculated to be 0.67% and 0.47%, respectively. Additionally, the release performance of ZnPc from pOEGMA micelles was monitored over a period of nearly 10 d, while the lyophilized micelles exhibited stability for 3 months. Lastly, the ZnPc-loaded micelles were more biocompatible than ZnPc on L929 cell line. The results suggest that the pOEGMA homopolymer possesses the capability to micellize through its methacrylate segments when interacting with highly hydrophobic molecules, presenting a promising avenue for enhancing the delivery efficiency of hydrophobic PSs in PDT. Moreover, it was also deciphered that obtained formulations were highly biocompatible according to cytotoxicity results and could be safely employed as drug delivery systems in further applications.

Abstract
In this study, Schiff base substituted phthalocyanine complexes (Zn1c, Zn2c) and their quaternized derivatives (Q-Zn1c, Q-Zn2c) were synthesized for the first time. Their structures have been characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, UV-Vis, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis as well as. The photophysicochemical properties (fluorescence, singlet oxygen and photodegradation quantum yield) of these novel complexes were investigated in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) for both non-ionic and quaternized cationic phthalocyanine complexes and in aqueous solution for quaternized cationic phthalocyanine complexes. Water soluble cationic phthalocyanine compounds gave good singlet oxygen quantum yield (0.65 for Q-Zn1c, 0.66 for Q-Zn2c in DMSO; 0.65 for Q-Zn2c in aqueous solution). The binding of Q-Zn1c and Q-Zn2c to BSA/DNA was studied by using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and these. Studies indicate that the mechanism of BSA quenching by quaternized zinc(II) phthalocyanines was static quenching. Quaternized zinc(II) phthalocyanines interacted with ct-DNA by intercalation. Quaternized zinc(II) phthalocyanines caused a decrease in cell viability and triggered apoptotic cell death after PDT was applied at a concentration that did not have a toxic effect on their own. Q-Zn1c and Q-Zn2c mediated PDT reduced the activity of SOD, CAT, GSH while increased MDA level in the prostate cancer cells. Furthermore, expression of apoptotic proteins after PDT was examined. The results revealed that the synthesized water soluble quaternized zinc(II) phthalocyanine complexes (Q-Zn1c and Q-Zn2c) are promising potential photosensitizers for PDT.

Abstract
A new near-infrared, spectrophotometric, and colorimetric probe based on a phthalocyanine-containing mercaptoquinoline unit (MQZnPc) has been constructed and utilized for discriminative and highly selective/sensitive detection of Ag+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ ions by using proper masking agents like EDTA, KI, and NaCl. The probe only responds to Ag+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ among the tested ions without any interference. The probe performs quite well (the limit of detection: 160 ppb, 148 ppb, and 276 ppb of Ag+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ions for UV-Vis, and 15 ppb, 37 ppb, and 467 ppb of Ag+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ ions for fluorescence, respectively), and has a fast response time (150 sec, 90 sec, and 90 sec of Ag+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ions for UV-Vis, and 300 sec, 240 sec, and 90 sec Ag+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ions for fluorescence, respectively). The probe also displays a colorimetric feature for UV-Vis and smartphone applications. Based on a single probe, Ag+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ ions which are the main toxic water contaminants could be recognized very quickly and colorimetrically with high recovery values in tap water samples. This study stands out with its unique properties compared to the related studies in the literature.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the mechanism and effect of photodynamic treatment mediated by 5-aminoketovalerate (5-ALA-PDT) on human ovarian cancer cells (OVCAR3 cells) and to provide a theoretical basis for the subsequent experimental step in vivo. Human ovarian cancer OVCAR3 cells were randomly divided into four groups: control group, laser irradiation alone group, photosensitizer alone group, and photodynamic treatment group. Alterations in cell morphology were observed with an inverted light microscope; cell viability was examined by CCK-8 assays. The ROS content and apoptosis rate were examined by flow cytometry analysis. Western blot was used to detect the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, such as caspase-3, Bax, and Bcl-2, and the expression of cleaved caspase-3 in live cells was detected by a cleaved caspase-3 assay kit. Inverted light microscopy showed alterations in cell morphology in different stages. Comparison with the three other groups indicated that tumor cell proliferation was significantly decreased in the photodynamic treatment group (P < 0.05). Flow cytometry analysis revealed that the content of ROS was higher in the photodynamic group than in the other three groups, and the apoptosis rate was higher in the photodynamic treatment group. The difference compared with the other three groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The western blot results indicated that the protein expression of Bcl-2 and caspase-3 was decreased in the photodynamic treatment group, and the protein expression level of Bax was increased (P < 0.05). The expression of cleaved caspase-3 was increased in the photodynamic treatment group compared with the other groups according to the data obtained with a microplate reader. Thus, our results demonstrated that the apoptosis and viability of OVCAR3 cells are altered in response to 5-ALA-PDT; however, no remarkable effects were observed in ovarian cancer cells treated with laser irradiation or photosensitizer alone. 5-ALA-PDT can significantly inhibit the growth of human ovarian cancer cells, and the mechanism of this effect is related to the tumor cell apoptosis mediated by the downregulation of Bcl-2 and caspase-3 and upregulation of Bax protein expression.

Abstract
In this work, 5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-thiopyridine substituted SiPc (1) and its quaternized derivative (2) were synthesized, and the effect of the linker sulfur atom on silicon phthalocyanines has been investigated for the first time in the literature. Both of the complexes have been characterized by standard spectroscopy methods. The complexes have good solubility in organic solvents and showed monomeric tendencies in all studied solvents. Only complex 2 had some aggregation in water because of solvent effects, as expected. In order to determine the therapeutic effect for cancer treatment, photophysicochemical properties were investigated in DMSO, DMF, toluene and water (for complex 2). The synthesized complexes were found to have about 3.5 times higher singlet oxygen quantum yields than the yields of unsubstituted SiPcCl2 ([Formula: see text] = 0.15 (in DMSO), 0.12 (in DMF), 0.10 (in toluene)) because of the effects of bulky axial groups.

Abstract
In this study, the synthesis and characterization of mono-(phthalocyaninato) lutetium(III) (1-Cl and 1-F) [Lu[Formula: see text](AcO)(Pc)] (Pc [Formula: see text] phthalocyaninato, AcO [Formula: see text] acetate) and bis-(phthalocyaninato) lutetium(III) (2-Cl and 2-Br) [Lu[Formula: see text]Pc[Formula: see text]] bearing halogenated (F, Cl and Br) phenoxy–phenoxy groups are described and verified by IR, [Formula: see text]H-NMR, UV-vis and mass spectrometry. Photochemical and photophysical properties of 1-F, 1-Cl 2-Cl and 2-Br in DMSO are also presented. A comparison between photophysical and photochemical parameters of mono and bis derivatives showed that mono phthalocyanines are better photosensitizers than bis phthalocyanines. Photophysical and photochemical properties of phthalocyanines are very useful for photodynamic therapy applications. Singlet oxygen quantum yields [Formula: see text] give an indication of the potential of the complexes as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy applications. The chloro, fluoro, bromo-phenoxy–phenoxy substituted mono-(phthalocyaninato) lutetium(III) complexes (1-Cl and 1-F) gave good singlet oxygen quantum yields (from 0.86 to 0.80) in DMSO. Thus, these complexes show potential as Type II photosensitizers for PDT of cancer.

Abstract
To investigate the effect and mechanism of 630-nm laser on human lung adenocarcinoma cell xenograft model in nude mice mediated by hematoporphyrin derivatives (HPD) and provide theoretical basis for clinical photodynamic therapy (PDT). Human lung adenocarcinoma cell xenograft model in nude mice was established and randomly divided into four groups: control group, pure photosensitizer group, pure irradiation group, and photodynamic treatment group. The tumor volume growth was compared, and the tumor growth inhibition rate was calculated. HE staining was used for routine pathological observation of tumor sections, and gross conditions of cells, interstitium, and blood vessels in several groups of tumor tissues were observed. TUNEL staining was used to observe and compare the apoptosis induced by photodynamic therapy. Real-time fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect the expression level of angiogenesis-related factors VEGF, HIF-1α and apoptosis-related factors Bax and Bcl-2 mRNA in the transplanted tumor tissues. Western blot was employed to detect the expression of angiogenesis-related proteins VEGF, HIF-1α and apoptosis-related proteins Bax, Caspase-3, and Bcl-2. Compared with the other three groups, the tumor growth inhibition rate of the photodynamic treatment group was significantly increased and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). HE staining showed that the animal model of lung adenocarcinoma A549 was successfully established. TUNEL staining revealed that more apoptotic cells were found in the photodynamic treatment group, and the apoptosis index was calculated. Compared with the other three groups, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). RT-PCR results showed that compared with the other three groups, the mRNA expressions of VEGF, HIF-1α, and Bcl-2 in the photodynamic treatment group decreased, while the expression of Bax mRNA increased(P < 0.05), and the differences were statistically significant. Western blot results showed that protein expressions of VEGF, HIF-1α, and Bcl-2 decreased in the photodynamic treatment group, while protein expression level of Bax and Caspase-3 increased (P < 0.05), indicating statistically significant differences. The 630-nm laser mediated by hematoporphyrin derivatives can significantly inhibit the growth of human lung adenocarcinoma xenograft tumor in nude mice, the mechanism of which is related to the inhibition of tumor angiogenesis by down-regulating VEGF and HIF-1α gene expression, and the promotion of tumor apoptosis by up-regulating Bax, Caspase-3, and down-regulating Bcl-2 gene expression.

The new free and nickel phthalocyanine derivatives, tetrakis [(2-formylphenoxy)-phthalocyanine (4), tetrakis [(2-formylphenoxy)-phthalocyaninato]nickel(II) (5) have been synthesized via de-protection of tetra acetal-substituted phthalocyanines in acetic acid/FeCl3 system. The starting phthalocyanines, tetrakis [(2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)phenoxy)-phthalocyanine (2) and tetrakis [(2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)phenoxy)-phthalocyaninato]nickel (3), were prepared by the tetramerization of 4-(2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl) phenoxy) phthalonitrile (1). The new compounds have been characterized by the combination of FT-IR, (1)H NMR, UV-Vis, Mass spectra and elemental analysis. Compound 1 crystallizes in the Orthorhombic, space group Pbca with a = 9.2542 (4) Å, b = 13.3299 (5) Å, c = 23.2333 (11) Å, and Z = 8. Compound 1 is built up from two planar groups (phthalonitrile and phenoxy), with a dihedral angle of 69.693(36)° between them and non-planar dioxolane group. We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on molecule 1, as well. Geometric, spectroscopic and electronic properties of compound 1 has been calculated using B3LYP method and 6-311++G(dp) basis set. Fluorescence spectroscopy was applied to record the photoluminescence spectra of the prepared phthalocyanines and the photophysical and photochemical properties were examined in DMSO.

Abstract
Phthalocyanines are excellent photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy as they have strong absorbance in the near infra-red region which is most relevant for in vivo activation in deeper tissular regions. However, most phthalocyanines present two major challenges, ie, a strong tendency to aggregate and low water-solubility, limiting their effective usage clinically. In the present study, we evaluated the potential enhancement capability of glycerol substitution on the photodynamic properties of zinc (II) phthalocyanines (ZnPc). Three glycerol substituted ZnPc, 1–3, (tetra peripherally, tetra non-peripherally and mono iodinated tri non-peripherally respectively) were evaluated in terms of their spectroscopic properties, rate of singlet oxygen generation, partition coefficient (log P), intracellular uptake, photo-induced cytotoxicity and vascular occlusion efficiency. Tetrasulfonated ZnPc (ZnPcS4) was included as a reference compound. Here, we showed that 1–3 exhibited 10–100 nm red-shifted absorption peaks with higher molar absorptivity, and at least two-fold greater singlet oxygen generation rates compared to ZnPcS4. Meanwhile, phthalocyanines 1 and 2 showed more hydrophilic log P values than 3 consistent with the number of glycerol attachments but 3 was most readily taken up by cells compared to the rest. Both phthalocyanines 2 and 3 exhibited potent phototoxicity against MCF-7, HCT-116 and HSC-2 cancer cell-lines with IC50 ranging 2.8–3.2 µM and 0.04–0.06 µM respectively, while 1 and ZnPcS4 (up to 100 µM) failed to yield determinable IC50 values. In terms of vascular occlusion efficiency, phthalocyanine 3 showed better effects than 2 by causing total occlusion of vessels with diameter <70 µm of the chorioallantoic membrane. Meanwhile, no detectable vascular occlusion was observed for ZnPcS4 with treatment under similar experimental conditions. These findings provide evidence that glycerol substitution, in particular in structures 2 and 3, is able to improve the photodynamic properties of ZnPc.

Abstract
The effects of substituents and solvents on the photophysical and photochemical parameters of zinc(II) phthalocyanines containing four Schiff’s base substituents attached directly and through phenyleneoxy-bridges on peripheral positions are reported. The group effects on peripheral position and the continual and intermittent conjugation of the phthalocyanine molecules on the photophysical and photochemical properties are also investigated. General trends are described for photodegradation, singlet oxygen, and fluorescence quantum yields of these compounds in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylformamide (DMF), and tetrahydrofurane (THF). Among the different substituents, phthalocyanines with cinnamaldimine moieties (1cand2c) have the highest singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) and those with nitro groups (1aand2a) have the highest fluorescence quantum yields in all the solvents used. The fluorescence of the substituted zinc(II) phthalocyanine complexes is effectively quenched by 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ) in these solvents.

Abstract
The synthesis, photophysical and photochemical properties of nonperipherally (α) mercaptoquinoline substituted Zn(II) , TiO(IV) and Mg(II) and quaternized Zn(II) phthalocyanines are described for the first time. These complexes (2 to 5) and their precursor are characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, electronic spectroscopy as well as mass spectroscopy. Complexes 2, 4 and 5 have good solubility in organic solvents such as CHCl3 , DCM, DMSO, DMF, THF and toluene and are not aggregated in all solvents within a wide concentration range. Complex 3 showed very good solubility in water as well as DMSO and DMF. General trends are described for singlet oxygen, photodegradation and fluorescence quantum yields of these complexes in DMSO and DMF. While complex 2 has higher singlet oxygen and fluorescence quantum yields than 3, 4 and 5, complex 4 has higher fluorescence quantum yields in DMF and DMSO than 2, 3 and 5. The effect of the solvents and metal on the photophysical and photochemical parameters of the metallophthalocyanines are also reported.
