Amorphous SiCxOy coatings from ladder-like polysilsesquioxanes

Corrosion Resistance and Electrical Conductivity of Hybrid Coatings Obtained from Polysiloxane and Carbon Nanotubes by Electrophoretic Co-Deposition

Nanocomposites developed based on siloxanes modified with carbon nanoforms are materials with great application potential in the electronics industry, medicine and environmental protection. This follows from the fact that such nanocomposites can be endowed with biocompatibility characteristics, electric conductivity and a high mechanical durability. Moreover, their surface, depending on the type and the amount of carbon nanoparticles, may exhibit antifouling properties, as well as those that limit bacterial adhesion. The paper reports on the properties of polysiloxane (PS) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) nanocomposite coatings on metal surfaces produced by the electrophoretic deposition (EPD). A comparison with coatings made of pure PS or pure CNT on the same substrates using the same deposition method (EPD) is provided. The coatings were examined for morphology and elemental composition (SEM, EDS), structural characteristics (confocal Raman spectroscopy), electrical conductivity and were tested for corrosion (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy-EIS, potentiodynamic polarization-PDP). The results obtained in this study clearly evidenced that such hybrid coatings conduct electricity and protect the metal from corrosion. However, their corrosion resistance differs slightly from that of a pure polymeric coating.

A Novel Strategy for Creating an Antibacterial Surface Using a Highly Efficient Electrospray-Based Method for Silica Deposition

Adhesion of bacteria on biomedical implant surfaces is a prerequisite for biofilm formation, which may increase the chances of infection and chronic inflammation. In this study, we employed a novel electrospray-based technique to develop an antibacterial surface by efficiently depositing silica homogeneously onto polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film to achieve hydrophobic and anti-adhesive properties. We evaluated its potential application in inhibiting bacterial adhesion using both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria. These silica-deposited PET surfaces could provide hydrophobic surfaces with a water contact angle greater than 120° as well as increased surface roughness (root mean square roughness value of 82.50 ± 16.22 nm and average roughness value of 65.15 ± 15.26 nm) that could significantly reduce bacterial adhesion by approximately 66.30% and 64.09% for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, compared with those on plain PET surfaces. Furthermore, we observed that silica-deposited PET surfaces showed no detrimental effects on cell viability in human dermal fibroblasts, as confirmed by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide and live/dead assays. Taken together, such approaches that are easy to synthesize, cost effective, and efficient, and could provide innovative strategies for preventing bacterial adhesion on biomedical implant surfaces in the clinical setting.

Macromonomers as a Novel Way to Investigate and Tailor Silicon-Oxycarbide-Based Materials Obtained from Polymeric Preceramic Precursors

It has been shown that bifunctional monomers (D units), which are used to increase the carbon content in silicon oxycarbide precursors, can form volatile oligomers, thus affecting the amount of carbon available during the transition into the final material in the annealing process. Additionally, an uneven distribution of carbon-rich mers may lead to the formation of a free-carbon phase, instead of the incorporation of carbon atoms into the silicon matrix. In this study, a novel two-step approach was utilized. Firstly, a macromonomer containing a number of structural units with precise structure was synthesized, which was later polycondensed into a ceramic precursor. Chlorodimethylsilane modified 2,4,6,8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane was used as a silicon oxycarbide precursor monomer containing both T and D structural units (i.e., silicon atoms bonded to three and two oxygen atoms, respectively), with well-defined interconnections between structural units. Such a macromonomer prevents the formation of small siloxane rings, and has a very limited number of possible combinations of structural units neighboring each silicon atom. This, after investigation using IR, XRD, TG and elemental analysis, gave insight into the effect of “anchoring” silicon atoms bonded to two methyl groups, as well as the impact of their distribution in comparison to the materials obtained using simple monomers containing a single silicon atom (structural unit).

Dehydroxylation of Perlite and Vermiculite: Impact on Improving the Knock-Out Properties of Moulding and Core Sand with an Inorganic Binder

The article presents the results of research aimed at examining the type of swelling material introduced into moulding or core sand to improve their knock-out properties. Tests on Slovak perlite ore (three grain sizes), Hungarian perlite ore and ground vermiculite (South Africa) were carried out. For this purpose, thermal and structural analyses (FTIR—Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), a chemical composition test (XRF-X-Ray Fluorescence), phase analysis (XRD—X-Ray Diffraction), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM—Scanning Electron Microscope) as well as final strength tests of moulding sands with the addition of perlite ore and vermiculite were carried out. The results of thermal studies were related to IR (Infrared Spectroscopy) spectra and XRD diffractograms. It has been shown that the water content in the pearlite ore is almost three times lower than in vermiculite, but the process of its removal is different. Moreover, the chemical composition of the perlite ore, in particular the alkali content and its grain size, may influence its structure. The phenomena of expansion (perlite) and peeling (vermiculite) have a positive effect on the reduction of the final sand strength and eliminate technological inconveniences (poor knocking out) that significantly limit the wide use of moulding sands with inorganic binders.

Chemical Structure and Microstructure Characterization of Ladder-Like Silsesquioxanes Derived Porous Silicon Oxycarbide Materials

The aim of this work was to synthesize porous ceramic materials from the SiOC system by the sol-gel method and the subsequent pyrolysis. The usage of two types of precursors (siloxanes) was determined by Si/C ratio in starting materials. It allows us to control the size of the pores and specific surface area, which are crucial for the potential applications of the final product after thermal processing. Methyltrimethoxysilane and dimethyldiethoxysilane were mixed in three different molar ratios: 4:1, 2:1, and 1:1 to emphasize Si/C ratio impact on silicon oxycarbide glasses properties. Structure and microstructure were examined both for xerogels and obtained silicon oxycarbide materials. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis was performed to confirm that obtained materials are porous and Si/C ratio in siloxanes precursors affects porosity and specific surface area. This kind of porous ceramics could be potentially applied as gas sensors in high temperatures, catalyst supports, filters, adsorbents, or advanced drug delivery systems.

Amorphous Silicon Oxynitride-Based Powders Produced by Spray Pyrolysis from Liquid Organosilicon Compounds

Silicon oxynitrides (SiO_xN_y) have many advantageous properties for modern ceramic applications that justify a development of their new and efficient preparation methods. In the paper, we show the possibility of preparing amorphous SiO_xN_y-based materials from selected liquid organosilicon compounds, methyltrimethoxysilane CH₃Si(OCH₃)₃ and methyltriethoxysilane CH₃Si(OC₂H₅)₃, by a convenient spray pyrolysis method. The precursor mist is transported with an inert gas or a mixture of reactive gases through a preheated tube reactor to undergo complex decomposition changes, and the resulting powders are collected in the exhaust filter. The powders are produced in the tube at temperatures of 1200, 1400, and 1600 °C under various gas atmosphere conditions. In the first option, argon Ar gas is used for mist transportation and ammonia NH₃ gas serves as a reactive medium, while in the second option nitrogen N₂ is exclusively applied. Powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results confirm the highly amorphous nature of all products except those made at 1600 °C in nitrogen. SEM examination shows the spheroidal particle morphology of powders, which is typical for this method. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy reveals the presence of Si–N and Si–O bonds in the powders prepared under Ar/NH₃, whereas those produced under N₂ additionally contain Si–C bonds. Raman spectroscopy measurements also support some turbostratic free carbon C in the products prepared under nitrogen. The directly determined O- and N-contents provide additional data linking the process conditions with specific powder composition, especially from the point of view of oxygen replacement in the Si–O moieties formed upon initial precursor decomposition reactions by nitrogen (from NH₃ or N₂) or carbon (from the carbonization of the organic groups).

Preparation and structural studies of black glasses based on ladder-like silsesquioxanes

Black glasses are very interesting and promising materials from the point of their thermal and mechanical resistance. They can be used as protective layers on different kind of substrates, like steel, titanium, glasses. Controlling amount of carbon introduced to its structure is crucial for the properties of the material. Samples were prepared by sol-gel method using ladder-like silsesquioxanes as precursor and were heat-treated at 800°C in inert atmosphere. Middle infrared, EDX and MAS NMR studies were carried out on heated samples to determine their structure. All methods confirmed presence of Si-C bonds in the resulting material. Theoretical MIR spectrum, of the constructed black glass model, allowed to make a precise assignment of bands in the experimental spectrum.

SiOC glasses produced from silsesquioxanes by the aerosol-assisted vapor synthesis method

In this paper, we describe a new method based on aerosol-assisted vapor synthesis for making glass materials by pyrolysis of readily available silsesquioxanes CH3Si(OCH3)3 and CH3Si(OC2H5)3. Combined powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and spectroscopic studies in the far infrared region (FIR) showed that under applied conditions the method yielded amorphous materials. Subsequent structural studies with the application of the (29)Si and (13)C MAS NMR, Raman, and middle infrared (MIR) techniques led to the conclusion that the pyrolysis of the silsesquioxane precursors resulted in glass materials with a structure of amorphous silica v-SiO2. In the case of certain glasses prepared from CH3Si(OCH3)3, they were also shown to possess in the structure some Si-C bonds (black glasses), whereas those originated from CH3Si(OC2H5)3 were composites that in addition to the silica glass phase contained domains of free/unbound carbon.
