Ab initio, DFT, HOMO–LUMO and Natural Bond Orbital analyses of the electronic structure of 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole

Controlled Delivery of 2-Mercapto 1-Methyl Imidazole by Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Inhibition of Copper Corrosion in NaCl Solution

In this paper, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 was modified by N-(3-aminopropyl)-imidazole to obtain a novel MOF called AMOF. Subsequently, AMOF served as a carrier for the delivery of 2-mercapto-1-methyl imidazole (MMI) to inhibit the corrosion of Cu. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were applied to characterize the morphologies and structures of AMOF and AMOF@MMI. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were adopted to value the capacity of the load and release of the AMOF, respectively. The mass ratio of loaded MMI molecules was 18.15%. In addition, the inhibition behavior of AMOF@MMI for Cu was evaluated by polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicated that the AMOF loaded MMI successfully, and the released MMI could adsorb on the Cu surface and inhibit the Cu corrosion. The inhibition efficiency could reach 88.2%. The binding and interaction energies between the AMOF surface and the MMI were -16.41 kJ/mol and -20.27 kJ/mol.

Nitronium salts as mild and inexpensive oxidizing reagents toward designing efficient strategies in organic syntheses; A mechanistic investigation based on the DFT insights

Today, introducing and evaluating the performance of novel reagents are an undeniable part of designing a successful synthetic strategy. Herein, we study the efficiency and mechanism of recently synthesized nitronium salts (e.g., NO₂FSO₃, NO₂CF₃SO₃, NO₂HS₂O₇, NO₂BF₄, NO₂PF₆, and NO₂HSO₄) in the oxidation reaction of ethanol to acetic acid, as a model of the primary alcohol transformations to linear carboxylic acid. An aldehyde molecule is the first produced species in this reaction which is converted to the acetic acid molecule in the presence of in situ-produced nitric acid. Concerning the proposed mechanism, among the studied nitronium salts, two different behaviors can be observed in the transition state of the step in which the aldehyde molecule is formed. The calculated barrier energies of this step have been scrutinized by powerful descriptors such as Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), Natural Bond Orbital (NBO), Electrostatic Potential (ESP) surfaces, and Activation Strain Model (ASM). The outcomes of the studied descriptors illustrate that nitronium salts have different performances in progressing the formation of the aldehyde molecule. Indeed, the likeness of the transition state of this step to the products for NO₂FSO₃, NO₂CF₃SO₃, and NO₂HS₂O₇ species is more significant than the others. Accordingly, these reagents have more potential to apply as oxidizing agents in the primary alcohol transformations to linear carboxylic acid.

Vibrational spectroscopy investigation and density functional theory calculations on (E)-N'-(4-methoxybenzylidene) benzohydrazide

The FT-IR, FT-Raman and UV-Vis spectra of the Schiff base compound (E)-N'-(4-methoxybenzylidene) benzohydrazide (MBBH) have been recorded and analyzed. The optimized geometrical parameters were calculated. The complete vibrational assignments were performed on the basis of TED of the vibrational modes, calculated with the help of SQM method. NBO analysis has been carried out to explore the hyperconjugative interactions and their second order stabilization energy within the molecule. The molecular orbitals (MO's) and its energy gap were studied. The first order hyperpolarizability (β0) and related properties (β, α0, Δα) of MBBH are also calculated. All theoretical calculations were performed on the basis of B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory.

Conformational stability, molecular orbital studies (chemical hardness and potential), vibrational investigation and theoretical NBO analysis of 4-tert-butyl-3-methoxy-2,6-dinitrotoluene

The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of 4-tert-butyl-3-methoxy-2,6-dinitrotoluene (musk ambrette) have been recorded in the regions 4000-400 cm(-1) and 3500-100 cm(-1), respectively. The total energy calculations of musk ambrette were tried for the possible conformers. The molecular structure, geometry optimization, vibrational frequencies were obtained by the density functional theory (DFT) using B3LYP and LSDA method with 6-311G(d,p) basis set for the most stable conformer "C1". The complete assignments were performed on the basis of the potential energy distribution (PED) of the vibrational modes, calculated and the scaled values were compared with experimental FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra. The observed and the calculated frequencies are found to be in good agreement. The stability of the molecule arising from hyper conjugate interactions and the charge delocalization has been analyzed using bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The HOMO and LUMO energy gap reveals that the energy gap reflects the chemical activity of the molecule. The dipole moment (μ), polarizability (α), anisotropy polarizability (Δα) and first hyperpolarizability (βtot) of the molecule have been reported. The thermodynamic functions (heat capacity, entropy and enthalpy) were obtained for the range of temperature 100-1000 K. Information about the size, shape, charge density distribution and site of chemical reactivity of the molecule has been obtained by mapping electron density isosurface with molecular electrostatic potential (MEP).
