Synthesis, physico-chemical characterization and antimicrobial activities of 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde-2-aminobenzoylhydrazone and its transition metal complexes

Two new zinc(II) and mercury(II) complexes based on N,N'-(cyclohexane-1,2-diylidene)bis(4-fluorobenzohydrazide): synthesis, crystal structures and antibacterial activities

Reaction of N,N'-(cyclohexane-1,2-diylidene)bis(4-fluorobenzohydrazide), C₂₀H₁₈F₂N₄O₂, (L^F), with zinc chloride and mercury(II) chloride produced different types and shapes of neutral coordination complexes, namely, dichlorido[N,N'-(cyclohexane-1,2-diylidene)bis(4-fluorobenzohydrazide)-κ²N,O]zinc(II), [ZnCl₂(C₂₀H₁₈F₂N₄O₂)], (1), and dichlorido[N,N'-(cyclohexane-1,2-diylidene)bis(4-fluorobenzohydrazide)-κ⁴O,N,N',O']mercury(II), [HgCl₂(C₂₀H₁₈F₂N₄O₂)], (2). The organic ligand and its metal complexes are characterized using various techniques: IR, UV-Vis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, in addition to powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), single-crystal X-ray crystallography and microelemental analysis. Depending upon the data from these analyses and measurements, a typical tetrahedral geometry was confirmed for zinc complex (1), in which the Zn^II atom is located outside the bis(benzhydrazone) core. The Hg^II atom in (2) is found within the core and has a common octahedral structure. The in vitro antibacterial activities of the prepared compounds were evaluated against two different bacterial strains, i.e. gram positive Bacillus subtilis and gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The prepared compounds exhibited differentiated growth-inhibitory activities against these two bacterial strains based on the difference in their lipophilic nature and structural features.

Ion recognition properties of new pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide bearing propeller-like pendant residues: multi-spectroscopic approach

Abstract

The synthesis and ion binding properties of new amide derived from propeller-like tris(2-pyridyl)amine and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid chloride were described. Amide binds divalent metal cations: copper(II), nickel(II), zinc(II), and lead(II) in acetonitrile. In acetonitrile:water mixture (9:1 v/v) amide interacts only with copper(II) and nickel(II) cations forming complexes of 1:1 stoichiometry. It was found that the introduction of bulky, nitrogen donor atom bearing pendant groups can influence coordination mode of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides. The probable model of ligand-ion interactions is proposed on the basis of 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy.

Self-Healing and Multistimuli-Responsive Hydrogels Formed via a Cooperation Strategy and Their Application in Detecting Biogenic Amines

We reported here a new platform of supramolecular hydrogels cross-linked by the cooperation of metal-ligand coordination and hydrophobic interaction. A salicylaldehyde benzoyl hydrazone-terminal poly(ethylene glycol) (2SBH-PEG) was synthesized and formed small micelles in an aqueous environment. Addition of Ni²⁺ connected the low-molecular-weight 2SBH-PEG into a metallopolymer via metal-ligand coordination and led to micelle aggregation, resulting in gelation due to the enhancement of hydrophobic interaction. The forming hydrogel, Ni-PEGel, exhibited rapid self-healing ability and reversible pH-responsive property. Because of the containing metal coordination bond, it was also sensitive to the strong competing ligands, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and pyridine. In addition, Ni-PEGel showed colorimetric changes when exposed to biogenic amine (BA) vapor. The color development of Ni-PEGel toward BAs makes it a good candidate in monitoring food spoilage.

Synthesis, spectral characterization, DNA interaction, radical scavenging and cytotoxicity studies of ruthenium(II) hydrazone complexes

Three new ruthenium(II) complexes with hydrazone ligands, furan-2-carboxylic acid (2,4-dihydroxy-benzylidene)-hydrazide (HL(1)), furan-2-carboxylic acid [4-(ethyl-propyl-amino)-2-hydroxy-benzylidene]-hydrazide (HL(2)) and furan-2-carboxylic acid (3-ethoxy-2-hydroxy-benzylidene)-hydrazide (HL(3)) were synthesized and characterized by various spectro-analytical techniques. The hydrazone ligands act as a tridendate ligand with ONO as the donor sites and are preferably found in the enol form in all the complexes. The molecular structure of the ligands was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The interaction of the ligands and the complexes with CT-DNA were evaluated by an absorption titration method which revealed that the compounds interact with CT-DNA through intercalation. Gel electrophoresis assay demonstrated the ability of the complexes to cleave the calf thymus DNA hydrolytically. Antioxidant studies showed that the ruthenium(II) complexes have a strong radical-scavenging properties. Further, the cytotoxic effect of the compounds examined on cancerous cell lines showed that the complexes exhibited substantial anticancer activity.
