Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of fungicides to protect crops from diseases is an effective method, and novel environmentally friendly plant-derived fungicides with enhanced performance and low toxicity are urgent requirements for sustainable agriculture. RESULTS Two kinds of rosin-based acylhydrazone compounds were designed and prepared. Based on the antifungal activity assessment against Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Phytophthora capsici, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and Botrytis cinerea, acylhydrazone derivatives containing a thiophene ring were screened and showed an inhibitory effect on rice R. solani. Among them, Compound 4n, with an electron-withdrawing group on the benzene ring structure attached to the thiophene ring, showed optimal activity, and the EC50 value was 0.981 mg L-1 , which was lower than that of carbendazim. Furthermore, it was indicated that 4n could affect the mycelial morphology, cell membrane permeability and microstructure, cause the generation of reactive oxygen species in fungal cells, and damage the nucleus and mitochondrial physiological function, resulting in the cell death of R. solani. Meanwhile, Compound 4n exhibited a better therapeutic effect on in vivo rice plants. However, the induction activity of 4n on the defense enzyme in rice leaf sheaths showed that 4n stimulates the initial resistance of rice plants by removing active oxygen, thereby protecting the cell membrane or enhancing the strength of the cell wall. Through the quantitative structure-activity relationship study, the quantitative chemical and electrostatic descriptors significantly affect the binding of 4n with the receptor, which improves its antifungal activity. CONCLUSION This study provides a basis for exploiting potential rosin-based fungicides in promoting sustainable crop protection. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-napthol (hereafter 1Q) is widely used as a chelating ligand applied in chelatometric, spectrophotometric analysis of metal ions. It appeared from the literature survey that no inclusion complex of 1Q was reported with nitroaromatics. The formation of charge-transfer complex gives an opportunity to improve the physico-chemical properties of different donors. So the complex of 1Q with 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP), picric acid (PA), and 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (3,5-DNSA) was described in this work in methanol medium. The ground and excited state binding constants and other spectroscopic data have been determined using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopic studies. All the complexes have been synthesized and characterized using FT-IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. Spectroscopic data reveal that 1Q joins by a N+HO- type hydrogen bond with nitroaromatics. Job's plot of the continuous variation of absorbance indicates that stoichiometry of CT-complex was 1:1. Thermal stability of the synthesized complex has determined by TGA-DTA analysis. Energy-minimization DFT calculation further supported the formation of the H-bonded charge-transfer adduct.

Abstract
Two novel charge transfer complexes CTC ([D[Formula: see text]TCNE] and [D[Formula: see text]CHL] : D [Formula: see text] (S, S)-bis-N,N-sulfonyl bis-L-phenylalanine dimethylester; TCNE [Formula: see text] Tetracyanoethylene; CHL [Formula: see text] Chloranil) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis: Electronic absorption, spectrophotometric titration, IR. The obtained results indicate the formation of 1:1 for both complexes. The experimental studies were complemented by quantum chemical calculations at DFT/CAM-B3LYP level of theory. Optimized geometrical structures, the electronic spectroscopy, excited-state properties and the descriptions of frontier molecular orbitals were computed and discussed by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). In addition, vibrational frequency calculations, the natural population analysis (NPA) confirms the presence of intermolecular interactions and natural bonding orbitals (NBO) calculation was carried out in order to elucidate the interactions between TCNE [Formula: see text]-acceptor and donor molecule.
