Abstract
Exploration of innovative strategies aiming to boost energy densities of supercapacitors without sacrificing the power density and long-term stability is of great importance. Herein, highly porous nitrogen-doped carbon spheres (NPCS) are decorated onto the graphite sheets (GSs) through a hydrothermal route, followed by a chemical activation. The capacitive performance of the NPCS is then enhanced by hydroquinone sulfonic acid (HSQA) incorporation in both cathodic electrolyte and electrode materials. Later, NPCS are decorated with polypyrrole (PPY), in which HSQA takes a versatile role as conjugated polymer dopant and cathodic redox additive. The capacitive performance of the negative electrodes is enhanced by incorporating of alizarin red S (ARS) as anodic redox additive. Finally, PPY(HQSA)@NPCS-GS//NPCS-GS asymmetric supercapacitor is assembled and tested in dual redox electrolyte system containing HQSA-cathodic and ARS-anodic electrolytes. This device delivers a remarkable energy density of 60.37 Wh kg-1, which is close or even better than lead acid batteries. Thus, the present work provides a novel pathway to develop high energy supercapacitors using redox active electrolytes for next-generation energy storage applications.

Abstract
The present work aimed to highlight an efficient, readily accessible, and cost-effective adsorbent derived from Dalbergia sissoo (DS) leaf powder for removing the environmentally hazardous dye "alizarin red S" (ARS) from hydrous medium. A variant of the adsorbent is activated via sulfuric acid and composited with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (DSMNC). Both adsorbents are thoroughly characterized using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, point of zero charge, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, which show that they have a porous structure rich in active sites. Different adsorption conditions are optimized with the maximum removal efficiency of 76.63% for DS and 97.89% for DSMNC. The study was highlighted via the application of various adsorption isotherms, including Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich, to adsorption data. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models were utilized to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of adsorption. The Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics exhibited the best fit, suggesting a combination of physical interactions, as confirmed by the D-R and Temkin models. The dominant adsorbate-adsorbent interactive interactions responsible for ARS removal were hydrogen bonding, dispersion forces, and noncovalent aromatic ring adsorbent pi-interactions. Thermodynamic parameters extracted from adsorption data indicated that the removal of the mutagenic dye "ARS" was exothermic and spontaneous on both DS and DSMNC, with DSMNC exhibiting higher removal efficiency.

Abstract
A citric acid cross-linked β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymer was synthesized and loaded on micro-ceramic balls to fabricate the solid-phase adsorbents (P-MCB) for adsorption and extraction of triazole pesticides from water. The stability of β-CD polymer and P-MCB was investigated in solutions with different pH values at different temperatures. The adsorption properties and the influence of kinetics, sorbent amount, pesticide concentration, and temperature on the adsorption capacity were evaluated. The results showed P-MCB had favorable adsorption of 15.98 mg/g flutriafol in 3.5 h. The equilibrium data followed the Freundlich equation, and the adsorption of flutriafol and diniconazole followed the second-order kinetics. The recovery rate of P-MCB for triazole pesticides in water was satisfactory, and the recovery rate was still 80.1%, even at the 10th cycle. The P-MCB had good stability, with a degradation rate of 0.2% ± 0.08 within 10 days, which could ensure extraction and recycling.

Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin (CD) and chitosan (CS) have attracted great attention due to their unique properties and structures. β-Cyclodextrin-grafted chitosan (CD-CS) has been widely used as a drug carrier to prepare nano-formulations for drug delivery. However, few researches have been conducted to investigate the effect of CD-CS as an excipient on cellular uptake and intestinal absorption. Herein, Caco-2 cells were used to investigate the influence of CD-CS on cellular uptake. The MTT assay showed that CD-CS was non-toxic to Caco-2 cells in concentrations ranging from 15.62 to 125 μg/mL. Confocal laser microscopy and flow cytometry measurements indicated that the uptake ability of Caco-2 cells was significantly enhanced after being treated with CD-CS at a concentration of 31.25 μg/mL or incubation for 0.5 h, and the uptake enhancement gradually increased with increasing CD-CS concentration and incubation time. The Caco-2 monolayer cell model and the everted intestinal sac method were employed to preliminarily explore the mechanism of the improved intestinal absorption. The results demonstrated that CD-CS might open the tight junctions and enhance the clathrin-dependent endocytosis, macro-pinocytosis, and phagocytosis of the intestinal epithelial cells. Such findings can serve as references and inspiration for the design of absorption enhancers.

Abstract
The extensive use of color dyes in modern society has resulted in serious concerns of water contamination. Many organic dyes bear charges; thus, materials of opposite charges have been tested for sorptive removal. However, the results from several studies also showed that anionic dyes methyl orange (MO) and alizarin red S (ARS) could be removed from water using minerals of negative charges, but the mechanisms were not addressed. In this study, negatively charged clinoptilolite was tested for its removal of anionic dyes MO and ARS from water under different physico-chemical conditions and to investigate the mechanism of Mo and ARS removal. The sorption capacities were 166 and 92 mmol/kg for MO and ARS, respectively, confirming the uptake of anionic dyes on negatively charged framework silicates. The influence of solution pH and ionic strength on MO removal was minimal, indicating the strong affinity of anionic dyes for clinoptilolite in comparison to other inorganic species. It was speculated that the N in the dimethyl group may bear a partial positive charge, which may have a net electrostatic attraction to the negatively charged mineral surfaces for MO sorption. For ARS, sorption may involve hydrogen bonding formation between the dye and the clinoptilolite. Moreover, under the experimental conditions, the MO molecules form dimers in solution via dimeric π-π interactions. Thus, the sorption of the dimers or aggregation of the MO monomers and dimers on clinoptilolite surface was attributed to additional MO removal, as suggested by molecular dynamic simulations. The speculation was supported by FTIR analyses and molecular dynamic simulations. As such, negatively charged Earth materials may be used as sorbents for the removal of certain anionic dyes via sorption, a new perspective for the innovative use of Earth materials.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to highlight and provide an update on the current development of pesticide remediation methods, focusing on the utilization of different cyclodextrin (CD) molecules. Because of less environmental impact and non-toxic nature, CDs are beneficial for pesticide remediation, reducing environmental risk and health hazards. They are advantageous for the removal of pesticides from contaminated areas, as well as for better pesticide formulation and, posing significant effects on the hydrolysis or degradation of pesticides. The review focuses on the current trend and innovations regarding the methods and strategies employed for using CDs in designing pesticide remediation. Nowadays, in addition to the conventional experimental techniques, molecular simulation approaches are significantly contributing to the study of such phenomena and hence are recognized as a widely used tool.

Poly(Alizarin Red S) on pyrolytic graphite electrodes as a new multi-electronic system for sensing oxandrolone in urine. Biosens Bioelectron 2021; 185:113234. Abstract
This study presents a new polymeric and multielectronic system, the poly-Alizarin Red S (PARS), obtained from the electropolymerization of Alizarin Red S (ARS) dye on an edge-plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (EPPGE) surface. During EPPGE/PARS electrochemical characterization, we identified seven stable and reversible redox peaks in acidic medium (0.10 mol L-1, pH 1.62 KH2PO4), which indicated its mechanisms underlying electropolymerization and electrochemical behavior. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to use an EPPGE/PARS electrode to detect oxandrolone (OXA) in artificial urine, where PARS acts as a synthetic receptor for OXA. The interactions of OXA with EPPGE/PARS as well as the properties of PARS were investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize EPPGE/PARS, and it was found that the PARS polymer formed a semi-globular phase on the EPPGE surface. The limit of detection for OXA found by the sensor was close to 0.50 nmol L-1, with a recovery rate of approximately 100% in artificial urine. In addition to the application proposed in this study, EPPGE/PARS is a low-cost product that could be applied in several devices and processes, such as supercapacitors and electrocatalysis.

Abstract
Synthetic organic dyes are widely used in various industrial sectors but are also among the most harmful water pollutants. In the last decade, significant efforts have been made to develop improved materials for the removal of dyes from water, in particular, on nanostructured adsorbent materials. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are an attractive class of hybrid nanostructured materials with an extremely wide range of applications including adsorption. In the present work, an iron-based Fe-BTC MOF, prepared according to a rapid, aqueous-based procedure, was used as an adsorbent for the removal of alizarin red S (ARS) and malachite green (MG) dyes from water. The synthesized material was characterized in detail, while the adsorption of the dyes was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. An optimal adsorption pH of 4, likely due to the establishment of favorable interactions between dyes and Fe-BTC, was found. At this pH and at a temperature of 298 K, adsorption equilibrium was reached in less than 30 min following a pseudo-second order kinetics, with k″ of 4.29 × 10−3 and 3.98 × 10−2 g∙mg−1 min−1 for ARS and MG, respectively. The adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model with maximal adsorption capacities of 80 mg∙g−1 (ARS) and 177 mg∙g−1 (MG), and KL of 9.30·103 L∙mg−1 (ARS) and 51.56·103 L∙mg−1 (MG).

Abstract
The inclusion complexes of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and (2-hydroxypropyl) β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) were prepared. Fluorescence spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry, ESI-MS, were used to investigate and characterize the inclusion complexation of SMX with cyclodextrins in solutions. Whereas in the solid state the complexes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman techniques. Enhanced twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT), emission as well as local excited (LE) bands were observed upon addition of HPβCD indicate that SMX enters deeper into the cyclodextrins cavity. The stoichiometries and association constants of these complexes have been determined by monitoring the fluorescence data. The effect of presence of ternary components like arginine and cysteine on the complexation efficiency of SMX with cyclodextrins was investigated. Molecular Dynamic simulations were also performed to shed an atomistic insight into the complexation mechanism. The results obtained showed that complexes of SMX with both cyclodextrins are stabilized in aqueous media by strong hydrogen bonding interactions.

Abstract
Camptothecin (CPT) is a potent chemotherapeutic agent that shows a broad spectrum of anticancer activities. However, it is clinically inactive because of poor aqueous solubility, rapid aqueous hydrolysis, and unexpected side effects. Three strategies have extensively been adopted to improve its dissolution rate including reduction of drug particle size to a nanoscale, use of an amorphous state, and the formation of inclusion compounds. In our study, we combined these three strategies together by constructing CPT nanoparticles by creating an inclusion complex with β-cyclodextrin (BCD). This new CPT formulation showed a rod-like structure of nanoscaled size and with semiamorphous or amorphous CPT. These BCD-CPT nanoparticles showed improved dissolution rate, stability, dispersion, and cellular uptake. When tested on cancer cells, BCD-CPT nanoparticles showed a much higher anticancer activity (IC50=14-28 μmol/l) in comparison with free CPT (IC50>500 μmol/l) and CPT nanocrystals (IC50>200 μmol/l). In addition, BCD-CPT nanoparticles can be physically mixed with CPT nanocrystals, leading to CPT formulations with tailored drug-release profiles to achieve customized therapeutics and flexible treatments in clinics.

Abstract
Red bell pepper carotenoids were complexed with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2-HPβCD) in different mass ratios (1:4, 1:6, 1:8 and 1:10) through ultrasonic homogenization in order to increase carotenoid solubility and their use as natural pigment in food. Inclusion complexes, red bell pepper extract and physical mixtures were analyzed by DSC, FT-IR, (1)H NMR and DLS. Solubility assay was performed to identify the effect of complexation on the solubility of carotenoids. From characterization assays, results showed that inclusion process occurred for all tested ratios. Results for water solubility assays demonstrated clear differences between solubility index of inclusion complexes (8.06±2.59-16.55±4.40mg/mL) and physical mixtures (3.53±1.44-7.3±1.88mg/mL), while carotenoid extract was no water soluble, as expected. These results indicated that molecular inclusion of carotenoids in 2-HPβCD was efficient to enhance their solubility in water, enabling application of red bell pepper carotenoid as natural pigment and/or bioactive substances in food.

Abstract
The interactions of an anionic redox-active dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) with novel N-hydroxyethyl-3-alkyloxypyridinium surfactants 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-(tetradecyloxy)pyridinium bromide, [HEC14OPyBr], and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-(hexadecyloxy)pyridinium bromide, [HEC16OPyBr], were investigated in an aqueous solution for the first time with an attempt to obtain comprehensive knowledge of oppositely charged dye-surfactant mixed systems. Different state-of-the-art techniques viz. conductivity, surface tension (ST), UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), potentiometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and (1)H-NMR analysis have been employed. The presence of ARS decreases the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of alkyloxypyridinium surfactants as the ARS monomers behave as aromatic counterions. A combined analysis of the techniques revealed the existence of cation-π, π-π stacking, H-bonding, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions among ARS and alkyloxypyridinium surfactants. A quantitative appraisal of the process of interaction among ARS and alkyloxypyridinium surfactants has been made in terms of various micellar, binding and electrochemical parameters evaluated using ST, UV-visible and voltammetric measurements. Also, the results extracted from (1)H-NMR and voltammetric measurements indicate that the catechol moiety of ARS is involved in the binding mechanism among ARS and alkyloxypyridinium surfactants.
