Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on a photochemical reaction that is started when a photosensitizing process is activated by the light and results in the death of tumor cells. Solubility is crucial in PDT applications to investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of phthalocyanines, but, unfortunately, most phthalocyanines show limited solubility especially in water. To increase the solubility of phthalocyanines in polar solvents and water, ionic groups such as -SO3-, -NR3+, -COO-, and nonionic groups such as polyoxy chains are frequently added to the peripheral or nonperipheral positions of the phthalocyanine framework. Since water-solubility and NIR-absorbing properties are essential for efficient PDT activation, studies have been focused on the synthesis of these types of phthalocyanine derivatives. This review focuses on the photophysical, photochemical, and some in vitro or in vivo studies of the recently published ionic and nonionic phthalocyanine-mediated photosensitizers carried out in the last five years. This review will have positive contributions to future studies on phthalocyanine chemistry and their PDT applications as well as photochemistry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sonophotodynamic therapy (SPDT), a combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT), may offer theraputic advantage. The therapeutic effects of sonodynamic, photodynamic, and sonophotodynamic of 5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-thiopyridine substituted silicon phthalocyanine (gy3) and its quaternized derivative (gy3q) were examined in vitro on prostate cancer using PC3 cells. METHODS The SDT, PDT and SPDT efficiency was determined by using MTT test.Apoptosis mechanism was evaluated by HOPI staining. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS According to MTT results, the phthalocyanines decreased cell viability when compared with a control group. Also, apoptosis measurement data represents that the phthalocyanines would produce much better therapeutic outcomes compare to PDT and SDT by utilizing SPDT. Further studies should be performed to understand the effectiveness of SPDT.

Abstract
In this study, peripherally benzimidazole unit substituted ZnPc (1) and its conjugation to nitrogen doped graphene quantum dot (NGQD) as potential phthalocyanine support via π-π stacking have been presented and fully characterized. The bottom-up solution-based synthesized NGQDs was conjugated non-covalently to zinc phthalocyanine to form NGQDs-Pc nanoconjugates. The photophysical and photochemical properties of both such as absorption, fluorescence, fluorescence life time, singlet oxygen quantum yields, triplet state quantum yields and exited state lifetimes were investigated in solutions. We observed a decrease in the fluorescence quantum yields with a corresponding increase in the triplet quantum yield and singlet oxygen quantum yield of the nanoconjugates in comparison to the phthalocyanine complex alone. Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy activities (PACT) of ZnPc alone and its nanoconjugate were determined towards Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract
The reaction between organic azides and alkyne derivatives via the Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) is an efficient strategy to combine phthalocyanines and analogues with different materials. As examples of such materials, it can be considered the following ones: graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, silica nanoparticles, gold nanoparticles, and quantum dots. This approach is also being relevant to conjugate phthalocyanines with carbohydrates and to obtain new sophisticated molecules; in such way, new systems with significant potential applications become available. This review highlights recent developments on the synthesis of phthalocyanine, subphthalocyanine, and porphyrazine derivatives where CuAAC reactions are the key synthetic step.

Abstract
In this work, 5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-thiopyridine substituted SiPc (1) and its quaternized derivative (2) were synthesized, and the effect of the linker sulfur atom on silicon phthalocyanines has been investigated for the first time in the literature. Both of the complexes have been characterized by standard spectroscopy methods. The complexes have good solubility in organic solvents and showed monomeric tendencies in all studied solvents. Only complex 2 had some aggregation in water because of solvent effects, as expected. In order to determine the therapeutic effect for cancer treatment, photophysicochemical properties were investigated in DMSO, DMF, toluene and water (for complex 2). The synthesized complexes were found to have about 3.5 times higher singlet oxygen quantum yields than the yields of unsubstituted SiPcCl2 ([Formula: see text] = 0.15 (in DMSO), 0.12 (in DMF), 0.10 (in toluene)) because of the effects of bulky axial groups.

Abstract
Zinc(II) (5), indium(III) (6), and lutetium(III) (7) phthalocyanines (Pcs) peripherally substituted with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) monomethyl ether 2000 (PEGME-2000) blocks were synthesized via Sonogashira coupling reaction with high yields and their photophysical, photochemical and photobiological properties were investigated. We elucidated the interactions of these compounds with calf thymus DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA), and determined K(DNA) and K(BSA) binding constants at degrees of 105 and 106, respectively. Singlet oxygen quantum yields were found (Ф∆ = 0.44, 0.54, and 0.68 for 5, 6, and 7, respectively). Thermodynamic parameters, as well as thermal denaturation profile of double-stranded CT-DNA were examined to determine the type of binding mode. According to our experimental data, we report that PEGME-2000 favors the formation of binary complex between DNA, and phthalocyanine complexes. Therein, thermodynamic data suggest that this binding mode is indeed spontaneous under reported conditions, and rather non-specific. Additionally, Pcs 5, 6, and 7 substituted with PEGME-2000 blocks showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi (yeast), and Pc 5 had the highest antimicrobial activity among them, as revealed by disc diffusion assay results. In short, our results suggest that these compounds could be used for photodynamic therapy, they have both antibacterial and antifungal activity, and the binding ability of new phthalocyanines 5, 6, and 7 with BSA paves the way for their utilization as drug vehicle in blood plasma.

Abstract
A poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-conjugated silicon(IV) phthalocyanine axially substituted with (PEG1000) chains (SiPc-PEG) was synthesized, and this novel phthalocyanine was characterized by [Formula: see text]H-NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods. Elemental analysis data were beneficial for the evaluation of the chemical structure of the new compound. The total number of (O–CH[Formula: see text]–CH[Formula: see text] units was calculated as 44 and the structure of the new PEG-conjugated silicon phthalocyanine was determined by the use of integral areas in [Formula: see text]H-NMR spectrum and the ratio of SiPc:PEG1000 was found as 1:2. The photophysical and photochemical properties were determined in both DMSO and aqueous solutions. In addition, the photocytotoxicity of the novel PEG-conjugated silicon(IV) phthalocyanine was also examined by testing against human cervical-carcinoma (HeLa) and hepato-carcinoma cells (HuH-7). The IC[Formula: see text] value for the SiPc-PEG compound was determined as 0.28 [Formula: see text]M for HeLa cells and 0.4 [Formula: see text]M for HuH-7 cells. These results imply that HeLa cells are apparently more responsive to photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment by SiPc-PEG than HuH-7 cells at low concentrations (up to 0.5 [Formula: see text]M) of the studied photosensitizer. Additionally, SiPc-PEG showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli at 48 h of incubation, the viabilities of E.coli cultures exposed to 1000 [Formula: see text]g/mL and 2500 [Formula: see text]g/mL SiPc-PEG concentration were reduced by about 90%, and the additional growth inhibitory effect of photoactivation was also observed clearly at these efficient concentrations. To conclude, the novel compound may have a high potential for photodynamic therapy.
