DFT theoretical and FT-IR spectroscopic investigations of the plasticity of clay minerals dispersions

Ab Initio Simulation of the IR Spectrum of Hydrated Kaolinite

The hydration of the basal surfaces of kaolinite is studied by theoretical methods. The cluster method was used to simulate the positions of atoms. The positions of the atoms of the basal surfaces of dry and hydrated minerals are optimized by minimizing the total energy in the Hartree–Fock approximation. The adsorption energies of water molecules were calculated taking into account the fourth-order correlation corrections of Møller–Plesset perturbation theory. The formation of the IR spectrum of kaolinite in the range of wave numbers 2500–4500 cm−1 is studied. The experimentally observed effect of the change in relative intensity and position of the band with a change in the moisture content of the sample is interpreted.

Atomic-level understanding of interface interactions in a halloysite nanotubes-PLA nanocomposite

To understand the nature of the bonding mechanism between poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT), a first-principles DFT study was performed on the adsorption behavior of the PLA monomer, lactic acid (LA), on the outer, inner, and edge surfaces of the HNT. The role of LA functional groups, and its orientation behavior in the formation of bonds with HNT are systematically studied. Analysis of the adsorption energy, total and partial electron density of states (DOS), electric charge transfer between LA atoms and HNT mineral surfaces shows that van der Waals attraction governs their interaction. The calculations of the most stable adsorption configurations of LA show that the predominant number of hydrogen bonds is determined by the activity of the carboxyl functional group of LA on the hydroxylated surfaces of HNT. The important role of the –OH surface groups in the mechanism of lactic acid binding has been established; their absence on the external siloxane surface significantly reduces the LA affinity for HNT. The binding energy of lactic acid on the hydroxylated internal and edge surfaces of the HNT is much higher (by about 275%) than on the external siloxane surface. Mulliken population analysis showed that the formation of a hydrogen bond with the LA atomic groups leads to a more significant redistribution of charge on the inner and edge surfaces of the HNT in comparison with its outer surface. Van der Waals attraction between the LA and HNTs, as well as hydrogen bonds, is responsible for the formation of the bonding mechanism in halloysite nanotubes-PLA nanocomposite. Our results are in accord with available literature.

The mechanism of bond formation between PLA and outer, inner and edge surfaces of HNT was established.

Characterization of the firing behaviour of an illite-kaolinite clay mineral and its potential use as membrane support

The commercial value of any clay depends on its physical and chemical properties, these could help in tuning the characteristics of ceramic membrane supports required at extreme filtration conditions. The characteristics of two clay minerals named SA and CH were studied at various firing temperatures. The composition in oxides of both raw materials consisted of quartz (44.40 ± 0.60 to 46.98 ± 0.57 m%), alumina (13.16 ± 0.56 to 19.64 ± 0.48 m%), iron oxide (4.85 ± 0.46 to 6.37 ± 0.70 m %), and relatively smaller amounts of alkaline-earth oxides (3.34 ± 0.43 to 5.98 ± 0.33 m% calcium oxide and 1.98 ± 0.18 to 5.87 ± 0.34 m% for magnesium oxide). XRD of the investigated samples indicated the presence of kaolinite and illite as pure clay fractions in the clay mineral. SEM showed that the clay minerals were constituted from fine poorly crystalline particles with particles’ size more than 5 μm. The specific surface areas of the clay minerals were found to vary between 94.5 ± 6.3 to 138.6 ± 4.2 m²/g using methylene blue stain test, indicating that, the clay minerals fall within chlorite, illite, and kaolinite categories. The porosity of the clay supports made from both clays were found to be maximal with values of 23.45% ± 0.66 and 21.61% ± 0.60 for SA and CH clay materials respectively at 700°C. These values were a direct result of capillary movements of water in the specimen pores that were opened to the outside leading to the highest number macropores and mesopores in the specimen.

Effect of Colloidal Silica on the Hydration Behavior of Calcium Aluminate Cement

The effect of colloidal silica (CS) on the hydrate phases and microstructure evolution of calcium aluminate cement (CAC) was investigated. Samples hydrated with CS were obtained and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), hydration heat measurement and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The results revealed that SiO₂ nanoparticles may affect the hydrates crystallization process. There was a compact structure in the CAC paste with CS, while petal-shaped hydrates with a porous structure were formed in the pure CAC paste. The maximum value of electrical conductivity for CAC paste with CS suggested that the early stage of hydration for CAC was accelerated. However, the hydration heat curves revealed that the late stage of the CAC hydration process was inhibited, and the hydration degree was reduced, this result was in accordance with Thermogravimetry-Differential scanning calorimetry(TG-DSC) curves. The fitting results of hydration heat curves further showed that the hydration degree at NG (nucleation and crystal growth) process stage was promoted, while it was limited at the phase boundaries stage, and the diffusion stage in the hydration reaction was brought forward due to the addition of CS. According to these results and analyses, the differences in the hydration process for CAC with and without CS can be attributed to the distribution and nucleation effect of SiO₂ nanoparticles.
