Spectroscopic [FT-IR and FT-Raman] and molecular modeling (MM) study of benzene sulfonamide molecule using quantum chemical calculations

Micro-matrix cartridge extraction followed by online micro-solid phase extraction based on polystyrene@hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin nanofibers for selective determination of fipronil and its metabolites in soil

Micro-matrix cartridge extraction coupled on-line to micro-solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (μ-MCE-online-μ-SPE-HPLC-MS) is presented. Micro-matrix cartridge extraction (μ-MCE) was applied to highly efficient desorption of adsorbed pesticides from contaminated soil with favorable extraction efficiency (100%). Novel polystyrene@hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (PS@HPCD) electrospun nanofibers with 3D network structure were prepared to selectively capture fipronil and its metabolites. High selectivity was obtained with adsorption efficiency ≥ 86.64% via complexation, hydrophobic affinity, and π-π interactions. PS@HPCD nanofibers exhibited remarkable advantages such as excellent enrichment factors (24-55), superior permeability, and long service life (> 65 times). Under the optimum conditions, wide linear range (0.1-1000 ng g^-1), low detection limits (0.0032-0.0067 ng g^-1), high recoveries (84-124.5%), favorable repeatability (RSD ≤ 10.4%, n = 5), and reproducibility (RSD ≤ 7.2%, n = 3) were acquired for fipronil and three metabolites. The developed method was applied to the pesticide determination in actual soils and the ISO-certified soil with satisfactory recoveries (96.5%). The method developed provides a green, efficient, and miniaturized method for the determination of trace pesticide residues in soil.

Formation of a Stable Co-Amorphous System for a Brick Dust Molecule by Utilizing Sodium Taurocholate with High Glass Transition Temperature

Brick dust molecules are usually poorly soluble in water and lipoidal components, making it difficult to formulate them in dosage forms that provide efficient pharmacological effects. A co-amorphous system is an effective strategy to resolve these issues. However, their glass transition temperatures (Tg) are relatively lower than those of polymeric amorphous solid dispersions, suggesting the instability of the co-amorphous system. This study aimed to formulate a stable co-amorphous system for brick dust molecules by utilizing sodium taurocholate (NaTC) with a higher Tg. A novel neuropeptide Y5 receptor antagonist (AntiY5R) and NaTC with Tg of 155 °C were used as the brick dust model and coformer, respectively. Ball milling formed a co-amorphous system for AntiY5R and NaTC (AntiY5R-NaTC) at various molar ratios. Deviation from the theoretical Tg value and peak shifts in Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated intermolecular interactions between AntiY5R and NaTC. AntiY5R-NaTC at equal molar ratios resulting in an 8.5-fold increase in AntiY5R solubility over its crystalline form. The co-amorphous system remained amorphous for 1 month at 25 °C and 40 °C. These results suggest that the co-amorphous system formed by utilizing NaTC as a coformer could stably maintain the amorphous state and enhance the solubility of brick dust molecules.

Polycarbonate/Sulfonamide Composites with Ultralow Contents of Halogen-Free Flame Retardant and Desirable Compatibility

A novel halogen-free flame retardant containing sulfonamide, 1,3,5,7-tetrakis (phenyl-4-sulfonamide) adamantane (FRSN) was synthesized and used for improving the flame retardancy of largely used polycarbonate (PC). The flame-retardant properties of the composites with incorporation of varied amounts of FRSN were analyzed by techniques including limited oxygen index, UL 94 vertical burning, and cone calorimeter tests. The new FR system with sulfur and nitrogen elements showed effective improvements in PC's flame retardancy: the LOI value of the modified PC increased significantly, smoke emission suppressed, and UL 94 V-0 achieved. Typically, the composite with only 0.08 wt% of FRSN added (an ultralow content) can increase the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value to 33.7% and classified as UL 94 V-0 rating. Furthermore, the mechanical properties and SEM morphology indicated that the FRSN has very good compatibility with PC matrix, which, in turn, is beneficial to the property enhancement. Finally, the analysis of sample residues after burning tests showed that a high portion of char was formed, contributing to the PC burning protection. This synthesized flame retardant provides a new way of improving PC's flame retardancy and its mechanical property.

Human dentin, as an important calcified tissue in the body, plays significant roles in withstanding masticatory forces and has a complex hierarchical organization. Understanding the composition and ultrastructure of dentin is critical for elucidating mechanisms of biomineralization under healthy and pathological states. Here, atomic force microscope infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) and AFM-based amplitude modulation-frequency modulation (AM-FM) techniques were utilized to detect the heterogeneity in chemical composition and mechanical properties between peritubular and intertubular dentin at the nanoscale. AFM-IR spectra collected from peritubular and intertubular dentin contained similar vibrational bands in the amide regions (I, II and III), suggesting that collagen may exist in both structures. A distinctive band at 1336 cm⁻¹ indicative of SO stretching vibrations was detected only in peritubular dentin. AFM-IR imaging showed an uneven distribution of chemical components at different locations, confirming the heterogeneity of dentin. The Young’s modulus of peritubular dentin was higher, and was associated to a higher mineral content. This study demonstrated distinctive chemical and mechanical properties of peritubular dentin, implying the different development and mineralization processes between peritubular and intertubular dentin. AFM-IR is useful to provide compositional information on the heterogeneity of human dentin, helping to understand the mineral deposition mechanisms of dentin.

Analysis of two novel 1-4 quinolinone structures with bromine and nitrobenzyl ligands

The scientific community has shown particular interest in the study of quinolinones-a class of bicyclic organic compounds. An example of these compounds are the 4-quinolinones, considered to be very useful building blocks, since they can adapt their molecular structures with different ligands for applications in various fields such as pharmacy, medicine, physics and engineering. The compounds (E)-3-(benzylidene)-2-(3-nitrophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-quinolin-4-(1H)-one (NFQ) and (E)-3-(benzylidene)-2-(4-bromophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1-(phenylsulfonyl) quinolin-4-(1H)-one (BFQ) were synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, ¹H and ¹³C NMR, and melting point. NFQ crystallized in the orthorhombic Pbca space group while BFQ appears in the monoclinic P2₁/n space group. X-ray diffraction was used to evaluate their crystallographic structures, and Hirshfeld surface evaluates the intermolecular interactions, supramolecular arrangement and packaging. Theoretical vibrational assignments and calculated electronic properties also demonstrate acceptable agreement between experimental and theoretical results.

Structural confirmation and spectroscopic study of a biomolecule: Norepinephrine

The present work deals with the conformational and vibrational spectroscopic study of an important bio-molecule named norepinephrine in gas phase. The FTIR and FTRaman spectrum of norepinephrine in amorphous form were recorded in wavenumber range 4000-400 cm^-1 and 4000-50 cm^-1 respectively. We have investigated twenty-seven stable conformational structures of norepinephrine molecule. All the calculations have been done using Density Functional Theory with exchange functional B3LYP incorporated with the 6-31++G(d, p) basis set. The effect of hydrochloride on different bond lengths, bond angles and dihedral angles in the most stable conformer has also been studied. The total potential energy distribution for both the most stable conformer and the most stable conformer in hydrochloride was performed with the help Normal coordinate analysis method. Most of the calculated vibrational frequencies are in good agreement with the experimental frequencies. The natural bond orbital analysis was also performed to ensure the stability of electronic structures of norepinephrine. To know chemical reactivity of norepinephrine molecule we have calculated the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO orbitals and it has found above 5 eV in all the conformers.
