Abstract
A detailed study for the synthesis of dinickel(II)-thiolate and dinickel(II)-hydrosulfide complexes and the complete characterization of the relevant intermediates involved in the C-S bond cleavage of thiolates are presented. Hydrated Ni(II) salts mediate the hydrolytic C-S bond cleavage of thiolates (NaSR/RSH; R = Me, Et, nBu, tBu), albeit inefficiently, to yield a mixture of a dinickel(II)-hydrosulfide complex, [Ni2(BPMP)(μ-SH)(DMF)2]2+ (1), and the corresponding dinickel(II)-thiolate complexes, such as [Ni2(BPMP)(μ-SEt)(ClO4)]1+ (2) (HBPMP is 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl]-4-methylphenol). A systematic study for the reactivity of thiolates with Ni(II) was therefore pursued which finally yielded 1 as a pure product which has been characterized in comparison with the dinickel(II)-dichloride complex, [Ni2(BPMP)(Cl)2(MeOH)2]1+ (3). While the reaction of thiolates with anhydrous Ni(OTf)2 in dry conditions could only yield [Ni2(BPMP)(OTf)2]1+ (5) instead of the expected dinickel(II)-thiolate compound, the C-S bond cleavage could be suppressed by the use of a chelating thiol, such as PhCOSH, to yield [Ni2(BPMP)(SCOPh)2]1+ (6). Finally, with the suitable choice of a monodentate thiol, a dinickel(II)-monothiolate complex, [Ni2(BPMP)(SPh)(DMF)(MeOH)(H2O)]2+ (7), was isolated as a pure product within 1 h of reaction, which after a longer time of reaction yielded 1 and PhOH. Complex 7 may thus be regarded as the intermediate that precedes the C-S bond cleavage and is generated by the reaction of a thiolate with an initially formed dinickel(II)-solvento complex, [Ni2(BPMP)(MeOH)2(H2O)2]3+(4). Selected dinickel(II) complexes were explored further for the scope of substitution reactions, and the results include the isolation of a dinickel(II)-bis(thiolate) complex, [Ni2(BPMP)(μ-SPh)2]1+ (8).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Triazoles are a class of aza-heterocycles with broad spectrum of biological importance. The synthetic tunability of the triazole moiety allows for the development of new pharmacophores with applications as drugs to contend with the burden of cancer. OBJECTIVE In this study, we aimed to develop a series of N-aryltriazole and N-acridinyltriazole molecular hybrids and evaluate their potential as anticancer agents. METHODS The triazole derivatives (1-10) were synthesized via a tandem nucleophilic substitution of aryl chlorides with sodium azide followed by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the resulting organic azides with terminal/internal alkynes. From terminal alkynes, the well established copper(I) catalyzed azide-alkynes 1,3- dipolar cycloaddition, a premier example of click chemistry, was employed to access the 1,4-regioisomers of N-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazoles and N-acridynyl-1H-1,2,3-triazoles. All the compounds thus synthesized were characterized by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry. RESULTS Thermally controlled 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition was used to deliver N-aryl-1H-1,2,3-triazoles with 1,4,5-substitution on the triazole framework. The unprecedented high regioselectivity promoted by the sterically-strained silylated 1,4,5-trisubstituted moiety 4a offers a useful synthetic precursor with the silyl group being a synthetic handle for further structural elaboration to the desired 1,(4),5-di(tri)substituted 1,2,3- triazoles. Notably, anticancer evaluation revealed good cytotoxic activities of the novel acridinyltriazole hybrids (6-10) at micromolar concentrations in the range of 12.5 µM-100 µM against cervical cancer HeLa, kidney cancer HEK293, lung cancer A549 and leukemic MT4 cancer cell lines (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION A series of novel triazole-based acridine hybrids have been developed as potential leads for the development of multifaceted anticancer agents.

Abstract
In recent years, the number of people suffering from cancer and multidrug-resistant infections has sharply increased, leaving humanity without any choice but to search for new treatment options and strategies. Although cancer is considered the leading cause of death worldwide, it also paves the way many microbial infections and thus increases this burden manifold. Development of small molecules as anticancer and anti-microbial agents has great potential and a plethora of drugs are already available to combat these diseases. However, the wide occurrence of multidrug resistance in both cancer and microbial infections necessitates the development of new and potential molecules with desired properties that could circumvent the multidrug resistance problem. A successful strategy in anticancer chemotherapy has been the use of metallo-drugs and this strategy has the potential to be used for treating multidrug-resistant infections more efficiently. As a class of molecules, Schiff bases have been the topic of considerable interest, owing to their versatile metal chelating properties, inherent biological activities and flexibility to modify the structure to fine-tune it for a particular biological application. Schiff base-based metallo-drugs are being researched to develop new anticancer and anti-microbial chemotherapies and because both anticancer and anti-microbial targets are different, heterocyclic Schiff bases can be structurally modified to achieve the desired molecule, targeting a particular disease. In this review, we collect the most recent and relevant literature concerning the synthesis of heterocyclic Schiff base metal complexes as anticancer and anti-microbial agents and discuss the potential and future of this class of metallo-drugs as either anticancer or anti-microbial agents.
