Synthesis, DFT calculations, electronic structure, electronic absorption spectra, natural bond orbital (NBO) and nonlinear optical (NLO) analysis of the novel 5-methyl-8H-benzo[h]chromeno[2,3-b][1,6] naphthyridine-6(5H),8-dione (MBCND)

Sub-Thick Electrodes with Enhanced Transport Kinetics via In Situ Epitaxial Heterogeneous Interfaces for High Areal-Capacity Lithium Ion Batteries

The ever-growing portable electronics and electric vehicle draws the attention of scaling up of energy storage systems with high areal-capacity. The concept of thick electrode designs has been used to improve the active mass loading toward achieving high overall energy density. However, the poor rate capabilities of electrode material owing to increasing electrode thickness significantly affect the rapid transportation of ionic and electron diffusion kinetics. Herein, a new concept named "sub-thick electrodes" is successfully introduced to mitigate the Li-ion storage performance of electrodes. This is achieved by using commercial nickel foam (NF) to develop a monolithic 3D with rich in situ heterogeneous interfaces anode (Cu₃ P-Ni₂ P-NiO, denoted NF-CNNOP) to reinforce the adhesive force of the active materials on NF as well as contribute additional capacity to the electrode. The as-prepared NF-CNNOP electrode displays high reversible and rate areal capacities of 6.81 and 1.50 mAh cm^-2 at 0.40 and 6.0 mA cm^-2 , respectively. The enhanced Li-ion storage capability is attributed to the in situ interfacial engineering within the NiO, Ni₂ P, and Cu₃ P and the 3D consecutive electron conductive network. In addition, cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge curves, and symmetric cell electrochemical impedance spectroscopy consistently reveal improved pseudocapacitance with enhanced transports kinetics in this sub-thick electrodes.

Advanced Tri-Layer Carbon Matrices with π-π Stacking Interaction for Binder-Free Lithium-Ion Storage

Enabling materials with distinct features toward achieving high-performance energy storage devices is of huge importance but highly challenging. Commercial carbon cloth (CC), because of its appealing chemical and mechanical properties, has been proven to be an excellent conductive substrate for active electrode materials. However, its performance is notably poor when directly used as an electrode in energy storage, due to its low theoretical capacity and surface area. Herein, we successfully endow the CC with enhanced storage capacity via formation of a π-π stacking interaction by integrating electrochemically activated CC (denoted CC/ACC) with biomass-derived carbon (BMDC) (denoted π-CC/ECC@BMDC). The π-CC/ECC@BMDC electrode displays excellent storage performance with a high capacity of 2.53 mAh cm^-2 under 0.2 mA cm^-2 when used as anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Due to the induction energy, the negatively charged molecules of the CC/ACC functional groups interact with the BMDC during carbonization, creating the π-π stacking interaction. Based on first-principles calculations, the structural design of the tri-layer carbon enables the movement of electrons around the π-π stacking interaction, which significantly facilitates rapid transportation of electrons, creates three-dimensional (3D) ion tunnels for fast transportation of ions, and improves the electrode's mechanical and electronic properties.

Theoretical Insight into the Interaction between Chloramphenicol and Functional Monomer (Methacrylic Acid) in Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Molecular imprinting technology is a promising method for detecting chloramphenicol (CAP), a broad-spectrum antibiotic with potential toxicity to humans, in animal-derived foods. This work aimed to investigate the interactions between the CAP as a template and functional monomers required for synthesizing efficient molecularly imprinted polymers for recognition and isolation of CAP based on density functional theory. The most suitable monomer, methacrylic acid (MAA), was determined based on interaction energies and Gibbs free energy changes. Further, the reaction sites of CAP and MAA was predicted through the frontier molecular orbitals and molecular electrostatic potentials. Atoms in molecules topology analysis and non-covalent interactions reduced density gradient were applied to investigate different types of non-covalent and inter-atomic interactions. The simulation results showed that CAP was the main electron donor, while MAA was the main electron acceptor. Moreover, the CAP–MAA complex simultaneously involved N-H···O and C=O···H double hydrogen bonds, where the strength of the latter was greater than that of the former. The existence of hydrogen bonds was also confirmed by theoretical and experimental hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analyses. This research can act as an important reference for intermolecular interactions and provide strong theoretical guidance regarding CAP in the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers.

An Investigation of the Intermolecular Interactions and Recognition Properties of Molecular Imprinted Polymers for Deltamethrin through Computational Strategies

Deltamethrin (DM) is a toxic pesticide that is nonetheless widely used to control insect pests in agricultural production. Although the number of DM molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) is increasing in many scientific applications, the theoretical aspects of the participating intramolecular forces are not fully understood. This paper aims to explore the intermolecular interactions between the template molecule DM and the functional monomer acrylamide (AM) through density functional theory (DFT), analysis of hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and adsorption thermodynamics. The results indicated that there is strong hydrogen bonding between O19 of DM and H9 of AM, suggesting that it is the preferable site for the binding of the target molecule. The existence of interaction sites was found to play an important role in the recognition process. The results from selective adsorption experiments showed that the DM MIPs exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for DM (Q = 75.72 mg g⁻¹) as compared to the five structural analogs. Furthermore, the recovery rates of spiked DM from various teas using the DM MIPs as solid-phase extraction filler also possessed a high value (all greater than 83.68%), which enables them to be used as separate and recognition functional materials.

Electronic structure, reactivity, and Hirshfeld surface analysis of carvone

The density functional theory (at the B3LYP level using 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set) was used for the investigation of the geometry and electronic properties of the carvone. The electronic properties and chemical activity of the titled compound were investigated by means of several theoretical approaches, molecular electrostatic potential surface, natural bond orbital, and frontier molecular orbital analyses. It was established that the oxygen atom in the structure characterized the electrophilic reactivity; the positive regions are localized on the hydrogen atoms, which can be considered as possible sites for nucleophilic attack. A detailed analysis of the intermolecular interactions via Hirshfeld surface analysis and fingerprint plots revealed that the carvone structure is stabilized mainly by the formation of O. . .H/H. . .O hydrogen bonds. However, close contacts were established between C. . .H/H. . .C and H. . .H contacts.

Highly Advanced Degradation of Thiamethoxam by Synergistic Chemisorption-Catalysis Strategy Using MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC Composites with Ultrasonic Irradiation

MIL(Fe)/Fe-doped nanospongy porous biocarbon (Fe-SPC) composite was fabricated from MIL-100(Fe) via in situ growth on a unique Fe-doped nanospongy porous biocarbon (Fe-SPC) and was used as Fenton-like catalyst for advanced degradation of thiamethoxam (THIA). Fe was loaded on silkworm excrement and calcined to Fe-SPC with nanospongy and high sp² C structure. The in situ growth strategy embedded the Fe-SPC into MIL-100(Fe) crystals and formed conductive heterojunctions with an intensified interface by Fe-bridging effect, which was confirmed by negative shift of Fe³⁺ binding energy in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC composites exhibited high degree of crystallinity and surface area (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller: 1730 m²/g). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and density functional theory simulations demonstrated that THIA was converted to a relatively stable compound (C₄H₅N₂SCl), which could be captured by MIL-100(Fe) with strong chemical bonding energy (Fe-N, -587 kJ/mol), followed by a significant geometric distortion, resulting in a thorough degradation. Efficient charge separation and synergistic chemisorption-catalysis strategy resulted in the high catalytic activity of MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC. The composite catalyst concurrently exhibited high mineralization ratio with 95.4% total organic carbon removal (at 25 °C and 180 min) and good recycling ability under wider neutral/alkaline conditions. Endorsing to these intriguing properties, MIL(Fe)/Fe-SPC can be deemed an efficient contender for removal of hard-degradable pesticides and other environmental pollutants in practical applications.

Synthesis, molecular, electronic structure, linear and non-linear optical and phototransient properties of 8-methyl-1,2-dihydro-4H-chromeno[2,3-b]quinoline-4,6(3H)-dione (MDCQD): Experimental and DFT investigations

Base catalysed ring opening ring closure (RORC) reaction of 6-methylchromone-3‑carbonitrile (1) with 1,3-cyclohexanedione afforded 8-methyl-1,2-dihydro-4H-chromeno[2,3-b]quinoline-4,6(3H)-dione (MDCQD). Theoretical calculations by Density Functional Theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311G (d,p) level of theory was utilized to illustrate the equilibrium geometries of MDCQD. Also, the nonlinear optical properties, simple harmonic vibrational frequencies, thermo-chemical parameters and Mullikan atomic charges were calculated. In addition, the electronic absorption spectra in polar and non polar solvents were discussed on the basis of TD-DFT calculations. A nanofiber-like structure with high aggregation was resolved by using scanning electron microscopy images and its particle sizes were measured by particle size analyzer. The spectroscopic characteristics of the prepared thin film of MDCQD were studied in a wide spectral range of 200-2500nm. The analysis of the absorption edges affords two direct optical band gaps with energies of 1.00 and 2.76eV. A characteristic emission peak of photoluminescence spectrum in the visible region was detected and has a red-shift as a result of solvent polarity. The MDCQD film based heterojunction showed rectification behavior and diode-like characteristics. The photovoltaic characteristics under illumination of 100mW/cm² were studied. The open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current were found to be 0.22V and 4.25×10^-7A/cm², respectively. Moreover, the prepared heterojunction showed remarkable phototransient characteristics which afford the probability for the operation as a photodiode.
