Spectroscopic, DFT, optical band gap, powder X-ray diffraction and bleomycin-dependant DNA studies of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes derived from macrocyclic Schiff base

Preparation, Characterization of New Antimicrobial Antitumor Hybrid Semi-Organic Single Crystals of Proline Amino Acid Doped by Silver Nanoparticles

Proline is water soluble amino acid extensively used in drug delivery systems. Compounds of cobalt (Co) transition metal have potent antimicrobial and anticancer activities. However, a drug delivery system combining proline cobalt is not reported yet. For the first time, new hybrid semi-organic single crystals of proline cobalt chloride (PCC) are prepared. The novelty of the article is also that single crystal proline cobalt chloride showed potent antimicrobial and antitumor activity. Doping of PCC by Ag⁰NPs significantly increased these biological activities. The anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystals can mitigate the cytotoxicity of Ag⁰NPs on normal cells. Silver nanoparticles (Ag⁰NPs) improved the crystal habits and physicochemical properties. Ag⁰NPs showed the best performance, paramagnetic materials n-type semiconductors due to delocalized excess electrons of Ag⁰NPs incorporated in the crystal lattice interstitially. Crystals have high absorptivity for UV-radiation electromagnetic radiation. Ag⁰NPs enhanced AC electrical conductivity up to 2.3 × 10⁴ Ω cm^-1 due to high electron density. Proline doped crystals are obtained in good purity as triclinic unit cell with having anisotropic magnetism. PCCAg⁰NPs crystal exhibited: high antimicrobial activities to various bacterial and fungal species, inhibition zone (mm): 21, 25, 24, 26, 30, 28, 12, and 46 for S. aureus, E. faecalis, S. typhi, E. coli, P. aerugino, K. pneumoniae, A. braselienses, and C. albicans, respectively, in comparison to ciprofloxacin antibiotic (23, 0, 26, 26, 25, 0, 0, 0) for the same tested species, respectively; higher cytotoxicity against breast cancer cells (IC₅₀ 22.1 μM) than the reference drug cisplatin (IC₅₀ 11.7 μM); and lower cytotoxicity to normal healthy lung cells MRC-5, (IC₅₀ 145.5 μM) than cisplatin (IC₅₀ 30.2 μM). Hence, this crystal is a candidate for chemotherapy of breast cancer.

Solid-State Luminescent Materials Containing Both Indole and Pyrimidine Moieties: Design, Synthesis, and Density Functional Theory Calculations

Heterocyclic compounds with effective solid-state luminescence offer a wide range of uses. It has been observed that combining pyrimidine and indole moieties in a single molecule can enhance material behavior dramatically. Here, different heterocyclic compounds with indole and pyrimidine moieties have been synthesized effectively, and their structures have been validated using NMR, IR, and mass spectroscopy. The photoluminescence behavior of two substances was investigated in powder form and solutions of varying concentrations. After aggregation, one molecule displayed a redshifted luminescence spectrum, whereas another homolog showed a blueshift. Thus, density functional theory calculations were carried out to establish that introducing a terminal group allows modifying of the luminescence behavior by altering the molecular packing. Because of the non-planarity, intermolecular interactions, and tiny intermolecular distances within the dimers, the materials demonstrated a good emission quantum yield (Φ_em) in the solid state (ex. 25.6%). At high temperatures, the compounds also demonstrated a stable emission characteristic.

A highly efficient microwave-assisted synthesis of an LED-curable methacrylated gelatin for bio applications

This study deals with the development of an LED-curable methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) synthesis via microwave (MW) irradiation with a reaction and purification time-, energy-, and methacrylation reagent-saving approach. To investigate the efficiency of MW irradiation in GelMA synthesis, characteristics of the GelMAs prepared by using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) or methacrylic anhydride (MA) via the MW-assisted (MWA) method were compared comprehensively with those synthesized via the conventional heating method. Moreover, MWA reaction conditions were optimized in terms of methacrylation reagent concentrations (C), reaction time (t), and MW power (P). Characterization and assessment of the GelMAs were conducted with 1H NMR, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy along with physical-mechanical, thermal, and hydrophilicity analysis. The results demonstrated that the MWA synthesized GMA-GelMA hydrogels were possessed of increased methacrylation degree (MD), gel fraction (GF), tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EB), glass transition temperature (T g), and water contact angle (WCA) as well as decreased swelling degree (SD) values in comparison to those of MA-GelMA and GMA-GelMA hydrogels prepared via the MWA and conventional method, respectively. Enhanced properties of the MWA synthesized GMA-hydrogels suggested an effective methacryloyl conjugation leading to a greater amount of covalent crosslinking density justified by the dipolar moment calculations. Optimal GMA C, t, P, and purification time for a highly crosslinked GelMA hydrogel (MD: 96.1%, GF: 98.3%, SD: 10.11%, TS: 6.7 MPa, EB: 175.2%, T g: 75.34 °C, and WCA: 72.22°) were found to be a 5 times molar excess over the primary amine groups of gelatin, 5 min, 500 W, and 24 h, respectively. Thus, the optimized MW conditions offer a promising green method to prepare GelMAs for bio applications.

Synthesis and Studies of Electro-Deposited Yttrium Arsenic Selenide Nanofilms for Opto-Electronic Applications

Nanocomposite films grown by incorporating varying concentrations of Yttrium, a d-block rare-earth ion, into the binary chalcogenide Arsenic selenide host matrix is here presented. Films were grown via the wet-chemical electro-deposition technique and characterized for structural, optical, surface morphology, and photoluminescence (PL) properties. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) result of the host matrix (pristine film) showed films of monoclinic structure with an average grain size of 36.2 nm. The composite films, on the other hand, had both cubic YAs and tetragonal YSe structures with average size within 36.5–46.8 nm. The fairly homogeneous nano-sized films are shown by the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs while the two phases of the composite films present in the XRD patterns were confirmed by the Raman shifts due to the cleavage of the As-Se host matrix and formation of new structural units. The refractive index peaked at 2.63 within 350–600 nm. The bandgap energy lies in the range of 3.84–3.95 eV with a slight decrease with increasing Y addition; while the PL spectra depict emission bands across the Vis-NIR spectral regions. Theoretically, the density functional theory (DFT) simulations provided insight into the changes induced in the structure, bonding, and electronic properties. Besides reducing the bandgap of the As₂Se₃, the yttrium addition has induced a lone pair p-states of Se contributing nearby to Fermi energy level. The optical constants, and structural and electronic features of the films obtained present suitable features of film for IR applications as well as in optoelectronics.
