Synthesis and biological activity, and molecular modelling studies of potent cytotoxic podophyllotoxin-naphthoquinone compounds

A new approach for the synthesis of podophyllotoxin-naphthoquinone compounds using microwave-assisted three-component reactions is reported in this study. Novel podophyllotoxin-naphthoquinone derivatives with modification on ring E were synthesized. All the synthetic compounds were assessed in terms of their cytotoxicity profile against four cancer cell lines (KB, HepG2, A549, and MCF7), and noncancerous Hek-293 cell lines. Notably, treatment of SK-LU-1 cells with compounds 5a and 5b resulted in G2/M phase arrest of the cell cycle, caspase-3/7 activation, and apoptosis. Additionally, molecular docking studies were performed and showed important interaction of two compounds against residues in the colchicine-binding-site of tubulin as well. Taken together, compounds 5a and 5b were identified as potent anticancer agents.

Selective CO2 adsorption and bathochromic shift in a phosphocholine-based lipid and conjugated polymer assembly

We assemble a film of a phosphocholine-based lipid and a crystalline conjugated polymer using hydrophobic interactions between the alkyl tails of the lipid and alkyl side chains of the polymer, and demonstrated its selective gas adsorption properties and the polymer's improved light absorption properties. We show that a strong attractive interaction between the polar lipid heads and CO₂ was responsible for 6 times more CO₂ being adsorbed onto the assembly than N₂, and that with repeated CO₂ adsorption and vacuuming procedures, the assembly structures of the lipid-polymer assembly were irreversibly changed, as demonstrated by in situ grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction during the gas adsorption and desorption. Despite the disruption of the lipid structure caused by adsorbed polar gas molecules on polar head groups, gas adsorption could promote orderly alkyl chain packing by inducing compressive strain, resulting in enhanced electron delocalization of conjugated backbones and bathochromic light absorption. The findings suggest that merging the structures of the crystalline functional polymer and lipid bilayer is a viable option for solar energy-converting systems that use conjugated polymers as a light harvester and the polar heads as CO₂-capturing sites.

Assembly films of a phosphocholine-based lipid and a crystalline conjugated polymer had significant CO₂ selective adsorption and light absorption due to the attractive interaction of CO₂ with exposed polar lipid heads and enhanced morphologies.

meta-Terphenyl linked donor–π–acceptor dyads: intramolecular charge transfer controlled by electron acceptor group tuning

A series of meta-terphenyl linked donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) dyads were prepared to understand the electronic effects of a meta-terphenyl linker according to the electron-accepting ability change. The energy band gaps of the dyads were controlled by tuning the accepting ability, which resulted in emission colors ranging from blue-green to red. In the Lippert–Mataga plots, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behavior was observed, which showed gradually increased ICT characteristics as the accepting ability was increased. On the other hand, in the absorption spectra, a red shift of the ICT transition was observed differently from the electron-accepting ability tendency. Thus, the experimental results show that the ICT is determined by steric hindrance rather than the acceptor ability in the ground state due to the lack of π-conjugation of the terphenyl linker by the electron node in the meta-position, whereas ICT in the excited state is controlled by electron-accepting ability.

Dyads were prepared to understand the electronic effects of a meta-terphenyl linker according to the accepting ability change. The charge transfer properties in the ground/excited state are determined by accepting ability and/or steric hindrance.
