Synthesis, crystal structure, thermal stability and biological study of bis{(2-methoxy-6-[(E)-(propylimino)methyl]phenolato}nickel(II) complex

A Schiff base complex of nickel, bis{(2-methoxy-6-[(E)-(propylimino)methyl]phenolato}nickel(II) was synthesised by condensing bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde) nickel (II) and n-propylamine in methanolic medium. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the complex revealed it to possess planar geometry with a monoclinic crystal system. The non-isothermal TG/DTA runs on this complex in a high purity (99.99 %) nitrogen environment at atmospheric pressure confirmed the absence of any coordinated water. A sharp endotherm in its DTA shows a melting temperature range of 168-171 °C. It is thermally stable up to 243 °C and decomposes in two steps, yielding NiO and carbon as residue. In addition to the methoxy group (-OCH3), infrared analysis (IR) confirmed the presence of the characteristic azomethine group (-C[bond, double bond]N-) which is also responsible for the biological action. It was further analysed by elemental analyser (C, H, N), 1H and 13C NMR as well as mass spectrometry. It showed considerable antibacterial activity towards Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus when the concentration exceeds 200 μg/ml. The antifungal study shows significant inhibition with the antifungal drug imidazole as a positive control (PC). Small values of MIC, MBC/MIC indicate a lesser quantity of complex is required to inhibit the growth of micro-organisms.

Novel palladium(II) and Zinc(II) Schiff base complexes: Synthesis, biophysical studies, and anticancer activity investigation

BACKGROUND

Schiff base metal complexes are considered promising chemotherapeutic agents due to their potential application in cancer therapy.

METHODS

The current work sought to synthesize a brand-new Schiff base ligand obtained from 2-hydroxybenzohydrazide and (E)- 1-(2-(p-tolyl)hydrazono)propan-2-one with metal ions which included Pd(II) and Zn(II) ions. Elemental analyses, FT-IR, mass spectra, 1H NMR, UV-Vis spectrometer, and computational analysis characterized the compound's structure. In vitro, the breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) was tested for its sensitivity to Schiff base (HL) and its Pd(II) and Zn(II) complexes. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration IC₅₀ of the compounds was determined and used to perform the comet assay, which was carried out to reveal the photo-induced DNA damaging ability of the compounds of individual cells. Moreover, the compounds' effects on antioxidant defense systems of enzymes in cells: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and oxidant Malondialdehyde (MDA) were examined in MCF-7 cells.

RESULTS

The Pd(II) complex displayed approximately the same IC₅₀ as Cisplatin, while Zn(II) complex had better activity than Cisplatin with very low IC₅₀, 1.40 μg/ml. Significant alterations in SOD, CAT, GPx, and MDA production were discovered, inducing oxidative stress, enlarging ROS production, and reducing the antioxidant amount. This change was approximately similar in most compounds. Consequently, it promoted apoptosis, particularly the Zn(II) complex, which demonstrated an improved impact because of its ability to influence the antioxidant defense systems of enzymes, mostly SOD and GPx, besides increasing MDA levels.

CONCLUSION

It can be concluded that Zn(II) complex is the most effective anticancer drug since it induced a very similar genotoxic effect as Cisplatin and has a very low IC₅₀ value.

Data analysis for SEM-EDX, thermokinetics, surfactant, and corrosion inhibition activity of Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes of pyrrole-based surfactant ligand

This manuscript reports a dataset for the scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), surfactant properties, thermokinetics, and corrosion inhibition activity of [[Co(HL)₂.2H₂O] Cl₂.H₂O]] (1) and [[Zn(HL)₂.Cl] Cl.3H₂O]] (2) complexes with surfactant-based Schiff base ligand (HL). It contains analyzed data related to thermokinetics, such as the activation energy (E*), entropy change (∆S*), enthalpy change (∆H*), and free energy change (∆G*) of HL and metal complexes. It also contains the SEM micrographs and EDX images of the studied ligand and metal complexes. A detailed analysis of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) data and figures illustrating the surfactant behavior of the synthesized complexes are presented in this article. The data for the corrosion inhibition activity of all synthesized compounds are also included. The dataset is related to the research article entitled "Bioinorganic interest on Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes of pyrrole-based surfactant ligand: Synthesis, characterization, and in silico-ADME study".

Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Activities of New Schiff Base Compound and Its Lanthanide Complexes

The thermal condensation of 3-(2-Furyl)acrolein with 2-Amino-6-ethoxybenzothiazole generated a new Schiff base, (1E,2E)-N-(6-ethoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(furan-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-imine (L), with general formula of C16H14N2O2S. Also, a series of lanthanide complexes of gadolinium, samarium, and neodymium (La–Lc) were synthesized utilizing acetonitrile as the solvent and triethylamine as a buffer and catalyst. Based on elemental analysis, mass spectroscopy, and FTIR analysis, all of the Bis-(1E,2E)-N-(6-ethoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(furan-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-iminetri-nitratolanthanide(III) complexes with the general formula [LnL2(NO3)3]·H2O are solids with a 2:1 molar ratio (ligand: metal). Based on conductivity estimates, they are nonelectrolytes and monoatomic paramagnetic according to the magnetic moment measurements, and one mole of lattice water was found after thermal gravimetric measurements and FTIR analysis. Therefore, the lanthanide complexes show a ten-coordination structure with a deformed bicapped square antiprismatic. The Schiff base and its complexes were screened for their antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and antitumor properties. Their antimicrobial and antifungal activities were strong, and they also produced good antioxidant and antitumor effects.

In situ generation of exfoliated graphene layers on recycled graphite rods for enhanced capacitive performance of Ni-Co binary hydroxide

A functionalized exfoliated graphite rod (FEGR), with a high surface area, is produced for use as a promising substrate for supercapacitors, via controlled oxidative treatment of a recycled graphite rod of exhausted zinc–carbon batteries. SEM, EDX, XPS, FT-IR, Raman, and contact angle measurements are carried out to disclose the surface characteristics of the FEGR. The surface of the FEGR is characterized by in situ generated grooves, together with graphene layers which are directly attached to the underlying graphite base. The FEGR electrodes enhance the capacitive performance of Ni(OH)₂ and binary Ni–Co(OH)₂. The Ni–Co(OH)₂/FEGR electrode displays a superb specific capacity value (2552.6 C g⁻¹) at a current density of 5 A g⁻¹ and this value is retained to 70.8% at a high current density of 50 A g⁻¹ indicating the outstanding rate performance of this electrode material. This enhanced behavior is attributed to the facile interaction of electrolyte species, even at high current density, with the active sites of the redox catalyst layer (distributed over a larger fraction of the underlying substrate with enhanced hydrophilicity). Moreover, the excellent electrical conductivity of the in situ surface generated graphene layers is another promoting factor.

A Review on the Advancements in the Field of Metal Complexes with Schiff Bases as Antiproliferative Agents

Metal complexes play an essential role in pharmaceutical sciences for their multiple and important activities. Schiff bases are versatile pharmacophores able to form chelating complexes with several metals in different oxidation states. Complexes with Schiff bases are widely described in the literature for their multiple actions and numerous advantages, such as low cost and easy synthesis. They show multiple biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, antimalarial, antinflammatory and antitumor. Schiff bases may also form complexes with lanthanides and actinides acting as catalysts (e.g., in various synthetic processes) and antitumor agents. This review intends to extend on our previous paper regarding Schiff bases as antitumorals, highlighting the importance, in the field of the anticancer agents, of these tools as ligands of metal complexes.

Synthesis, characterization, antiproliferative of pyrimidine based ligand and its Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes and effectiveness of electroporation

In the study, a new Schiff base (ligand) was obtained using 4-aminopyrimidine-2(1H)-one, the starting material, and 2,3,4-trimethoxy benzaldehyde. Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes were obtained from the reaction of the ligand and NiCl₂·6H₂O, PdCl₂(CH₃CN)₂ (1:1 ratio). These compounds were characterized using the elemental and mass analysis, ¹H, ¹³C-NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility, thermal analysis, and the X-ray diffraction analyses. The antiproliferative activities of the synthesized ligand, Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes were identified on the HepG2 (human liver cancer cells) cell line and their biocompatibility was tested on the L-929 (fibroblast cells) cell line by the MTT analysis method. Furthermore, the effects of electroporation (EP) on the cytotoxic activities of synthesized compounds were investigated in HepG2 cancer cells. According to the MTT findings of the study, the ligand did not exhibit an antiproliferative activity while its Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes exhibited an antiproliferative activity. Moreover, it was observed that the antiproliferative activity of the Pd(II) complex was stronger than that of the Ni(II) complex. The combined application of EP + compounds is much more effective than the usage of the compounds alone in the treatment of HepG2 cancer cells. The EP increased the cytotoxicity of the Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes by 1.66, and 2.54 times, respectively. It was concluded that Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes may contribute as potential anti-cancer agents for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and yield promising results in the case of being used in ECT.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Novel Zn(II) and Cd(II) Schiff Base Complexes as Antimicrobial, Antifungal, and Antioxidant Agents

(E)-N,N-Dimethyl-2-((E-1-(2-(p-tolyl)hydrazono)propan-2-ylidene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (DMPTHP) and their Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Different tools of analysis such as elemental analyses, IR, mass spectra, and 1H-NMR measurements were used to elucidate the structure of the synthesized compounds. According to these spectral results, the DMPTHP ligand behaved as a mononegatively charged tridentate anion. Modeling and docking studies were investigated and discussed. Novel Schiff base (DMPTHP) ligand protonation constants and their formation constants with Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions were measured in 50% DMSO solution at 15°C, 25°C, and 35°C at I = 0.1 mol·dm−3 NaNO3. The solution speciation of different species was measured in accordance with pH. Calculation and discussion of the thermodynamic parameters were achieved. Both log K1 and –ΔH1, for M(II)-thiosemicarbazone complexes were found to be somewhat larger than log K2 and –ΔH2, demonstrating a shift in the dentate character of DMPTHP from tridentate in 1 : 1 chelates to bidentate in 1 : 2; M : L chelates and steric hindrance were generated by addition of the 2nd molecule. The compounds prepared have significant activity as antioxidants, similar to ascorbic acid. It is hoped that the results will be beneficial to antimicrobial agent chemistry. The formed compounds acted as a potent antibacterial agent. Molecular docking studies were investigated and have proved that DMPTHP as antibacterial agents act on highly resistant strains of E. coli and also as an anticancer agent.

Crystallization of Transition-Metal Oxides in Aqueous Solution beyond Ostwald Ripening

The crystallization mechanism of transition-metal oxides (TMOs) in a solution was examined based on ZnO crystallization using in-situ x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at the Zn K edge and semi-empirical quantum chemistry (SEQC) simulations. The XAFS results quantitatively determine the local structural and chemical properties around a zinc atom at successive stages from Zn(NO₃)₂ to ZnO in an aqueous solution. The results also show that a zinc atom in Zn(NO₃)₂ ions dissolves in a solution and bonds with approximately three oxygen atoms at room temperature (RT). When hexamethylenetetramine (C₆H₁₂N₄) is added to the solution at RT, a stable Zn-O complex consisting of six Zn(OH)₂s is formed, which is a seed of ZnO crystals. The Zn-O complexes partially and fully form into a wurtzite ZnO at 60 and 80 °C, respectively. Based on the structural properties of Zn-O complexes determined by extended-XAFS (EXAFS), SEQC simulations clarify that Zn-O complexes consecutively develop from a linear structure to a polyhedral complex structure under the assistance of hydroxyls (OH^-s) in an aqueous solution. In a solution with a sufficient concentration of OH^-s, ZnO spontaneously grows through the merging of ZnO seeds (6Zn(OH)₂s), reducing the total energy by the reactions of OH^-s. ZnO crystallization suggests that the crystal growth of TMO can only be ascribed to Ostwald ripening when it exactly corresponds to the size growth of TMO particles.
