Characterization and properties of a new energetic co-crystal composed of trinitrotoluene and 2,6-diaminotoluene

Molecular dynamics (MD) study to predict performances of a novel hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane/1,4-dinitroimidazole (CL-20/1,4-DNI) energetic cocrystal under different temperatures

CONTEXT

To estimate the influence of temperature on properties of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro- 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane/1,4-dinitroimidazole (CL-20/1,4-DNI) cocrystal explosive, the supercell crystal of CL-20/1,4-DNI cocrystal model was established. The mechanical properties, sensitivity, and stability of cocrystal model under different temperatures (T = 225 K, 250 K, 275 K, 300 K, 325 K, 350 K) were predicted. Results show that mechanical parameters, including bulk modulus, tensile modulus and shear modulus are the lowest when temperature is 300 K, while Cauchy pressure is the highest, indicating that CL-20/1,4-DNI cocrystal model has better mechanical properties at 300 K. Cohesive energy density (CED) and its components energies decrease monotonically with the increase of temperature, illustrating that the CL-20 and 1,4-DNI molecules are activated and the safety of cocrystal explosive is worsened with the increase of temperature. Cocrystal model has relatively higher binding energy when the temperature is 300 K, implying that the CL-20/1,4-DNI cocrystal explosive is more stable under this condition.

METHODS

The CL-20/1,4-DNI cocrystal model was optimized and the properties were predicted through molecular dynamics (MD) method. The MD simulation was performed with COMPASS force field and the ensemble was set as NPT, external pressure was set as 0.0001 GPa.

Cupric coordination compounds with multiple anions: a promising strategy for the regulation of energetic materials

To seek new high energetic materials, N-methylene-C-bridged nitrogen-rich heterocycle 1-((4,5-diamino-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)methyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3,5-diamine (DATMTDA) (2) was first synthesized, and two copper coordination compounds ([Cu₁₂(OH)₄(ClO₄)₄(H₂O)₄(DATMTDA)₁₂](ClO₄)₁₆·12H₂O (3) and [Cu₃(OH)(ClO₄)(DATMTDA)₃](ClO₄)₃(NO₃) (4)) based on 2 were formed by introducing different anions. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal structures of compounds 3 and 4 are similar and crystallize in monoclinic systems with the P2₁/c space group, while the central copper atoms show different coordination behaviors. However, the structure of compounds 3 and 4 is analogous to a three dimensional structure owing to the O atom of OH^-, forming coordinate bonds with three copper cations. The NBO charge of 2 was calculated using density functional theory to understand its coordination modes. The Hirshfeld surface calculation reveals that 3 and 4 have strong intermolecular interactions. The thermal decomposition processes, non-isothermal kinetics, and enthalpies of formation and sensitivities of these compounds were investigated. By introducing one NO₃^- of compound 4 to replace one ClO₄^- in compound 3, compound 4 shows lower density and lower decomposition peak temperature but lower sensitivity and a higher formation enthalpy than compound 3. The complex 4 possesses an outstanding catalytic effect for the decomposition of AP than that of complex 3. The results illustrate the possibility of introducing various anions into energetic coordination compounds for the regulation of energetic materials.

Theoretical insight on effect of DMSO-acetonitrile co-solvent on the formation of CL-20/HMX cocrystal explosive

CL-20/HMX-solvent interface models were established to understand the effect of DMSO-acetonitrile co-solvent on the formation of CL-20/HMX cocrystal. The molecular dynamics simulations were applied to theoretically investigate the interactions of CL-20/HMX cocrystal surfaces and dimethyl sulfoxide/acetonitrile co-solvents. The binding energies were calculated, and the interaction between solvent molecules and CL-20/HMX cocrystal faces was analyzed. The results show that molecular interactions would be affected by the mole ratios of solvent, and the comparison of the binding energies with different mole ratios revealed that dimethyl sulfoxide/acetonitrile with mole ratio of 1:3 favors the formation of CL-20/HMX cocrystal.

Pressure induced structural behavior of energetic cocrystal TNT/TNB: a density functional theory study

In order to find out the relationship between external pressures and properties of energetic materials, we used the density functional theory (DFT) method to investigate the structural, electronic, and absorption properties of crystalline 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT)/2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNB) under hydrostatic compression of 0-100 GPa. By analyzing the change of lattice constants (a, b, and c) of TNT/TNB under compression conditions, we found that variation tendency of the lattice constants was anisotropic. The b-axis is much stiffer than that along the a- and c-axes, which indicates that the TNT/TNB crystal is anisotropic within a certain pressure region. The pressure-induced structure transformation results in the new covalent bonds O11-C13, O12-C11, O8-C4, and O1-C12 at 60 GPa, and O4-C5 at 80 GPa, respectively. By analyzing the band structure and density of states of TNT/TNB in the pressure range over 40 GPa, the electronic structure of TNT/TNB changed to metallic system, which indicated it becomes more sensitivity under high pressures. The pressure-induced structure transformation of TNT/TNB also contributed to the relatively high optical activity of TNT/TNB at 70 GPa.
