Abstract
Fluoridated mouthrinse is indicated for individuals with high risk of caries. Chitosan (Chit) exhibits antibacterial properties, but little is known about its effects on enamel when combined with sodium fluoride (NaF) to form NaF/Chit supramolecular complexes. In our study, NaF/Chit supramolecular complexes structured as microparticles were synthetized and characterized, and their effects on human enamel were evaluated after cariogenic challenge simulating the daily mouthrinse use. Initially, NaF/Chit complex formation was investigated based on several titrations by measuring the zeta potential, electrical conductivity (κ), hydrodynamic diameter (Dh), viscosity (η) and heat flow (by isothermal titration calorimetry) against the molar ratio [NaF]/[Chitmonomer], which allowed us to identify the interactions between Chit-NaF with a stoichiometry of approximately 0.68. Spontaneous microparticle formation was observed. Samples of enamel blocks were prepared and divided into eight groups (n = 10/group): (i) 0.2% Chit; (ii) 0.2% NaF; (iii) 0.2% NaF/Chit suspension; (iv) 0.2% acetic acid; (v) 0.05% Chit; (vi) 0.05% NaF; (vii) 0.05% NaF/Chit suspension; and (viii) 0.05% acetic acid. Cariogenic challenge was performed in each sample by cycling in demineralization and remineralization solutions for 7 days. Before each demineralization cycle, the corresponding substances were passively applied daily for 90 s, even in groups with 0.02% concentration. After 7 days, samples were examined for Knoop hardness (KHN) measurements. The data were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). The 0.2% NaF and 0.2% NaF/Chit groups showed higher KHNpost-challenge values than the other groups. The 0.2% NaF/Chit microparticle suspension reduced the enamel hardness loss after cariogenic challenge as effectively as the 0.2% NaF solution and demonstrated potential for use in a formulation with anti-caries effects.

Abstract
The enantioseparation and resolution mechanism of mandelic acid (MA), 4-methoxymandelic acid (MMA), and 4-propoxymandelic acid (PMA) were investigated by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) as a chiral mobile-phase additive and molecular dynamics simulation. The suitable chromatographic conditions for the enantioseparation of MA, MMA, and PMA were obtained. Under the selected chromatographic conditions, these enantiomers could achieve baseline separation. The results of thermodynamic parameter analysis revealed that the main driven forces for the enantioseparation of MA, MMA, and PMA could be van der Waals forces and hydrogen-bonding interactions and the chromatographic retention of these chiral compounds was an enthalpy-driven process. The results of the molecular simulation revealed that their chiral resolution mechanism on HP-β-CD was responsible for the formation of inclusion complexes of enantiomers with HP-β-CD with different conformations and binding energies. And the binding energy of HP-β-CD with (S)-isomer was larger than that with (R)-isomer, which is consistent with the experimental results of the first elution of (S)-isomer. Additionally, it is also confirmed that the interaction energies included the van der Waals energy (∆Evdw ), electrostatic energy (∆Eelec ), polar solvation energy, and SASA energy (∆Esasa ), and the separation factor (α) was closely connected with the disparity in the binding energies of optical isomers and HP-β-CD complexes. Meanwhile, from molecular dynamics simulation, it can be found that the ∆(∆Ebinding ), (∆(∆Ebinding ) = ∆Ebinding,R - ∆Ebinding,S ) value was in order of MA-HP-β-CD complex > MMA-HP-β-CD complex > PMA-HP-β-CD complex, which was consistent with the order of Δ(ΔG) values obtained from van't Hoff plot. This indicated that the molecular dynamics simulation has predictive function for chiral resolution.

Abstract
Here, we report the electrostatic potential maxima and partial atomic charges evaluated on cetylpyridinium cation. The Hartree-Fock method and six DFT functionals (namely, PBE, TPSS, B3LYP, PBE0, M06, and wB97) were used to calculate partial atomic charges via CHELPG, Mulliken, Löwdin, Hirshfeld, and natural population schemes. Calculations were performed for the gas phase and for the CPCM water solvated cation, resulting in a set of 70 types of partial atomic charges. The main tendencies in charge deviations were discussed. In comparison with the electrostatic potential-based CHELPG partial charges, Hirshfeld, Mulliken, Löwdin, and NPA partitioning schema lead to an almost steady decrease in the partial charges in the cetyl chain. This agreed closely with the redistribution of electrostatic potential mapped onto the 0.002 e/Bohr3 isodensity surface.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) play an important role in self-assembly systems of amphiphiles. The structure of CDs provides distinguished physicochemical properties, including the ability to form host-guest complexes. The complexation affects the properties of guest molecules and can produce supramolecular aggregates with desirable characteristics for fundamental and practical applications. Surfactants are particularly attractive host molecules due to their wide variety, availability, responsiveness to different stimuli, and high relevance in different fields, e.g. medical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries. The tendency of organization in higher-order supramolecular aggregates arises the interest in applying such versatile complexes in the development of novel materials. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the thermodynamics aspects of surfactants and CDs inclusion complexes formation in aqueous environment, emphasizing the assessment of the interactions, thermodynamic driving forces, and structural aspects. Also, the most common analytical techniques used to gather deep insight into the aspects of CDs complexes are discussed and the perspectives for the surfactant-cyclodextrin complexes are pointed out.

Abstract
Schistosomiasis, caused by a blood fluke of the genus Schistosoma, afflicts over 230 million people worldwide. Treatment of the disease relies on just one drug, praziquantel. Cnicin (Cn) is the sesquiterpene lactone found in blessed thistle (Centaurea benedicta) that showed antiparasitic activities but has not been evaluated against Schistosoma. However, cnicin has poor water solubility, which may limit its antiparasitic activities. To overcome these restrictions, inclusion complexes with cyclodextrins may be used. In this work, we evaluated the in vitro and in vivo antischistosomal activities of cnicin and its complexes with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) against Schistosoma mansoni. Cnicin were isolated from C. benedicta by chromatographic fractionation. Complexes formed by cnicin and βCD (Cn/βCD), as well as by cnicin and HPβCD (Cn/HPβCD), were prepared by coprecipitation and characterized. In vitro schistosomicidal assays were used to evaluate the effects of cnicin and its complexes on adult schistosomes, while the in vivo antischistosomal assays were evaluated by oral and intraperitoneal routes. Results showed that cnicin caused mortality and tegumental alterations in adult schistosomes in vitro, also showing in vivo efficacy after intraperitoneal administration. The oral treatment with cnicin or Cn/βCD showed no significant worm reductions in a mouse model of schistosomiasis. In contrast, Cn/HPβCD complex, when orally or intraperitoneally administered to S. mansoni-infected mice, decreased the total worm load, and markedly reduced the number of eggs, showing high in vivo antischistosomal effectiveness. Permeability studies, using Nile red, indicated that HPβCD complex may reach the tegument of adult schistosomes in vivo. These results demonstrated the antischistosomal potential of cnicin in preparations with HPβCD.

Abstract
Surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) is an efficient and low-cost technology for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated sites. This study assessed the desorption processes and effects of Heterogemini surfactant (Dodecyldimethylammonium bromide/tetradecyldimethylammonium bromide, DBTB), two traditional surfactants (Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB; Sorbitan monolaurate, Span 20) and their mixed systems on the real PAHs-contaminated soil from an abandoned coking plant, as well they were analyzed micro morphologically. DBTB had greater desorption capability for PAHs and favorable interaction with the traditional surfactants confirmed by reaction parameters βm and Gibbs. Whether for total PAHs (TPAHs) or different molecular weight PAHs, the mixed system Span 20/DBTB had larger molar solubilization ratio (MSR) and partition coefficient (Km) than CTAB/DBTB, the highest desorption rate for TPAHs reaching 68.83%. Additionally, microscopic morphology showed micelles of Span 20/DBTB were more dispersed and formed strings easily, explaining its good desorption capability. What resulted demonstrated the feasibility of DBTB, a novel Heterogemini surfactant, and its mixed systems remediating PAHs-contaminated soil of abandoned industrial site.
