Synthesis, characterization, and crystal structure of (E)-Nʹ-(4-Bromobenzylidene)-benzenesulfonohydrazide and its application as a sensor of chromium ion detection from environmental samples

Sensitive Cr3+ sensor based on novel poly(luminol-co-1,8-diaminonaphthalene)/CeO2/MWCNTs nanocomposites

In this study, poly(luminol-co-1,8-diaminonaphthalene) (PLim-DAN) was synthesized and subsequently modified with MWCNTs and CeO2 NPs. The synthesized nanocomposites were analyzed using IR, SEM, TEM, and XRD. Furthermore, a comprehensive set of thermal behavior measurements were taken using TGA/DTG analysis. Next, the electroactivity of the developed nanocomposites was tested as an electrochemical sensor to measure the concentration of Cr3+ ions in phosphate buffers. The GCE adapted with the PLim-DAN/CeO2/CNTs-10% nanocomposite (NC) exhibited the highest current response among the other compositions and copolymers. The fabricated nanocomposite sensor showed high sensitivity, with a value of 19.78 μA μM-1 cm-2, and a low detection limit of 4.80 ± 0.24 pM. The analytical performance was evaluated by plotting a current calibration curve versus the concentration of Cr3+ ions. It was found to be linear (R2 = 0.9908) over the range of 0.1 nM to 0.1 mM, identified as the linear dynamic range (LDR). This electrochemical sensor demonstrated that it could be a useful tool for environmental monitoring by accurately detecting and measuring carcinogenic Cr3+ ions in real-world samples.

Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) by TiO2 Based Micro-Nano Reactor via the Synergy of Adsorption and Photocatalysis

The low-toxicity treatment of chromium-containing wastewater represents an important way of addressing key environmental problems. In this study, a core-shell structural ZIF-8@TiO2 photocatalyst was synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The obtained composite photocatalyst possessed improved photocatalytic activity compared with TiO2. The results indicated that the optimized ZIF-8@TiO2 composite exhibited the highest removal efficiency with 93.1% of Cr(VI) after 120 min under UV-vis irradiation. The removal curves and XPS results indicated that the adsorbed Cr(VI) on the ZIF-8 during the dark process was preferentially reduced. The superior removal efficiency of ZIF-8@TiO2 is attributed to the combination of both high adsorption of ZIF-8, which attracted Cr(VI) on the composite surface, and the high separation efficiency of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. For the mixture of wastewater that contained methyl orange and Cr(VI), 97.1% of MO and 99.7% of Cr(VI) were removed after 5 min and 60 min light irradiation, respectively. The high removal efficiency of multiple pollutants provides promising applications in the field of Cr(VI) contaminated industrial wastewater treatment.

Development of L-cysteine sensor based on thallium oxide coupled multi-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposites with electrochemical approach

Here, Nanocomposites of thallium oxide doped multi-walled carbon nanotube (Tl2O.MWCNT NCs) were prepared by utilizing the wet-chemical method (WCM) in an alkaline phase at low temperature. Different optical procedures (FTIR: Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy, XRD: Powder X-ray diffraction, FESEM: Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, XEDS: X-ray Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy, TEM: Tunneling Electron Microscopy, and XPS: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) were used to fully characterize (Optical, structural, crystalline, morphological, and elemental etc.) of the prepared Tl2O.MWCNT NCs. Modification of the thin-layer with NCs onto glassy carbon electrode (GCE) is prepared and applied for the enzyme-free detection of selective and sensitive L-cysteine by electrochemical approach. Using a reliable current-voltage approach, analytical sensing indexes such as sensitivity, LDR, LOD, LOQ, durability, and interference were assessed by fabricated sensor probe (GCE/Tl2O.MWCNT NCs/CPM) in selective detection of L-cysteine in a room condition, whereas nafion was used as conducting polymer matrix (CPM) during the fabrication of GCE with NCs. L-cysteine calibration plot was found to be linear over an extensive range of concentration. The calibration curve was used to calculate the sensing parameters such as sensitivity (316.46 pAμM-1cm-2), LOD down to (~18.90 ± 1.89 pM), and LOQ (63.0 pM) of the prepared sensor. The use of a simple WCM to validate the Tl2O.MWCNT NCs is a good approach for developing a NCs-based sensor for enzyme-free biomolecule identification and detection in the biomedical and health care fields in a broad scale. This proposed sensor (GCE/Tl2O.MWCNT NCs/CPM) is used to detect selective L-cysteine in real biological samples such as human, mouse, and rabbit serum and found acceptable and satisfactory results.

An enzyme free simultaneous detection of γ-amino-butyric acid and testosterone based on copper oxide nanoparticles

Herein, an easy wet-chemical process was used in basic medium with low temperature to prepare low-dimensional copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs). A variety of optical and structural techniques such as UV-visible, FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, XEDS, and XPS were used to characterize the synthesized CuO NPs in detail. Two sensitive and selective sensor probes for γ-amino-butyric acid (GABA) and testosterone (TST) were achieved after modification; a thin layer of NPs on a flat glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Sensor analytical parameters such as sensitivity (SNT), linear dynamic range (LDR), limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), robustness, and interference effects, were evaluated for the proposed sensor (GCE/CuO NPs) for GABA and TST, based on a dependable current-voltage technique. Calibration curves were found to be linear (R ² = 0.9963 and 0.9095) over a broad concentration range of GABA and TST (100.0 pM to 100.0 mM and 10.0 pM to 10.0 mM, respectively). Sensor parameters - SNT (316.46 and 2848.10 pA μM^-1 cm^-2), LDR (100.0 nM to 10.0 mM and 10.0 pM to 1.0 mM), LOD (≈11.70 and 96.67 pM), and LOQ (39.0 and 322.2 pM) - for GABA and TST were calculated from the calibration plot successively. Preparation of CuO NPs using the wet-chemical technique is a good approach for perspective expansion of NPs-based sensors for the enzyme-free detection of biomolecules. Our sensor probe (GCE/CuO NPs) is applied for the cautious recognition of GABA and TST in real biological samples -human, mouse, and rabbit serum - and achieved good and acceptable results.

Acute toxicity assessment of polyaniline/Ag nanoparticles/graphene oxide quantum dots on Cypridopsis vidua and Artemia salina

Nanotoxicology is argued and considered one of the emerging topics. In this study, polyaniline (PANI)/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPSA) capped silver nanoparticles (NPs)/graphene oxide (GO) quantum dots (QDs) nanocomposite (PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC) as a nanoadsorbent has a potential for removal of toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions from water. The acute toxicity of this NC was evaluated on Artemia salina and freshwater Ostracods (Cypridopsis vidua) larvae for 48 h. The measurements were made at 24 and 48 h with 3 repetitions. The 50% effective concentration (EC50) values of the NC were determined after the exposure of these organisms. According to the results of the optical microscope, it was found that both experimental organisms intake the NC. In the toxicity results of Ostracods, the NC had a highly toxic effect only at 250 mg/L after 48 h and the EC50 value was 157.6 ± 6.4 mg/L. For Artemia salina individuals, it was noted that they were less sensitive than the Ostracods and EC50 value was 476 ± 25.1 mg/L after 48 h. These results indicated that PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC has low toxicity towards both investigated organisms.

Quantum dots as nanosensors for detection of toxics: a literature review

Great advances have been made in sensor-based methods for chemical analysis owing to their high sensitivity, selectivity, less testing time, and minimal usage of chemical reagents. Quantum Dots (QDs) having excellent optical properties have been thoroughly explored for variety of scientific applications wherein light plays an important role. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of publications on the applications of QDs as photoluminescent nanosensors for the detection of chemicals and biomolecules. However, there has been hardly any publication describing the use of QDs in the detection of various toxic chemicals at one place. Hence, a literature survey has been made on the applications of QDs as chemosensors for the detection of gaseous, anionic, phenolic, metallic, drug-overdose, and pesticide poison so as to open a new perspective towards the role of sensors in analytical toxicology. In this review, the QD-based analysis of biospecimens for poison detection in clinical and forensic toxicology laboratories is highlighted.

Recent Advances in Electrochemical Monitoring of Chromium

The extensive use of chromium by several industries conducts to the discharge of an immense quantity of its various forms in the environment which affects drastically the ecological and biological lives especially in the case of hexavalent chromium. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors are useful devices for chromium determination. In the last five years, several sensors based on the modification of electrode surface by different nanomaterials (fluorine tin oxide, titanium dioxide, carbon nanomaterials, metallic nanoparticles and nanocomposite) and biosensors with different biorecognition elements (microbial fuel cell, bacteria, enzyme, DNA) were employed for chromium monitoring. Herein, recent advances related to the use of electrochemical approaches for measurement of trivalent and hexavalent chromium from 2015 to 2020 are reported. A discussion of both chromium species detections and speciation studies is provided.

A New Cr3+ Electrochemical Sensor Based on ATNA/Nafion/Glassy Carbon Electrode

A new electrochemical sensor of metal cation in an aqueous solution based on homobifunctional tridentate disulfide Schiff base and named 1,1'-(-((disulfanediylbis(2,1-phenylene))bis(azaneylylidene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(naphthalene-2-ol) (ATNA) was easily obtained quantitatively from the condensation reaction of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and2-aminothiophenol, and then fully characterized by spectroscopic techniques for structure elucidation. The molecular structure of ATNA was also confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study to reveal a new conformation in which the molecule was stabilized by the O-H…N type intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions in both moieties. The ATNA was used as a selective electrochemical sensor for the detection of chromium ion (Cr3+). A thin film of ATNA was coated on to the flat surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) followed by 5 % ethanolic Nafion in order to make the modified GCE (ATNA/Nafion/GCE) as an efficient and sensitive electrochemical sensor. It was found to be very effective and selective against Cr3+ cations in the company of other intrusive heavy metal cations such as Al3+, Ce3+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ga3+, Hg2+, Mn2+, Pb2+, and Y3+. The detection limit at 3 S/N was found to be 0.013 nM for Cr3+ ions within the linear dynamic range (LDR) (0.1 nM-10.0 mM) of Cr3+ ions with r2 = 0.9579. Moreover; this work instigates a new methodology for developing the sensitive as well as selective electrochemical toxic cationic sensors in the field of environmental and health care.
