Structure investigation of β-D-fructose crystal under high pressure: Raman scattering, IR absorption, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction

In situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies on maleic acid under high pressure conditions

Maleic acid was studied by Raman spectroscopy and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) under high pressure conditions by using a diamond anvil cell. The Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed from ambient pressure up to 9.2 GPa in the 100-3200 cm-1 spectral range. While the XRD measurements were performed up to 10.1 GPa. Here we present the pressure-dependence behavior from both the Raman modes and cell parameters. Maleic acid lattice parameters decrease anisotropically as a function of pressure and a reduction of 27% in the volume of the unit cell was observed. Modifications in the material's compressibility were observed at around 2 and 6 GPa.

Water-Wettable Open Plasmonic Nanocavities for Ultrasensitive Molecular Detections in Multiple Phases

Plasmonic nanocavities between metal nanoparticles on metal films are either hydrophobic or fully occupied by nonmetallic spacers, preventing molecular diffusion into electromagnetic hotspots. Here we realize water-wettable open plasmonic cavities by devising gold nanoparticle with site-selectively grown ultrathin dielectric layer-on-gold film structures. We directly confirm that hydrophilic dielectric layers of SiO₂ or TiO₂, which are formed only at the tips of gold nanorod via precise temperature control, render sub-10 nm cavities open to the surroundings and completely water-wettable. Simulations reveal that spontaneous wetting in our cavities is driven by the presence of tip-selective hydrophilic layer and tendency of minimizing high energy air/water interface inside the cavities. Our plasmonic cavities show significant Raman enhancement of up to 4 orders of magnitude higher than those of conventional ones for molecules in various media. Our findings will offer new opportunities for sensing applications of plasmonic nanocavities and have huge impacts on cavity plasmonics.

Structure-property relationships of molecular shape and orientation with compression and expansion of xylitol

Easy crystallization distinguishes xylitol from other sugars, which usually condense into a syrup from aqueous solution. Although two polymorphs, i.e. metastable monoclinic and high-density orthorhombic, have been reported for xylitol, only the latter is in practical use. Under high pressure, the same orthorhombic phase has been obtained by both isothermal and isochoric recrystallization. The stability of the orthorhombic xylitol phase to 5.0 GPa has been correlated with a uniform compression of all hydrogen bonds and some flexibility of the molecular conformation, which cushion the pressure-induced local strains. The anisotropic compressibility of xylitol and its thermal expansion are consistent with the rule of inverse effects of pressure and temperature. This inverse strain relationship has been correlated with the dimensions and orientation of xylitol molecules in the crystal structure.
