Adsorption behavior of barium ions onto ZnO surfaces: Experiments associated with DFT calculations

Adsorption and separation of Cs(I) and Ba(II) from aqueous solution using zinc ferrite-humic acid nanocomposite

Reclaimable adsorbents have an essential role in removing radionuclides from waste streams. Herein, zinc ferrite-humic acid ZFO/HA nanocomposite was synthesized for effective cesium and barium adsorption. The prepared ZFO/HA nanocomposite was analyzed using analytical techniques including XRD, FTIR, EDX, and SEM. From kinetic studies, the mechanism adsorption process follows the second model. The isotherm studies clarified that the Langmuir model fit the adsorption of both ions onto the prepared sample, and the monolayer capacities are equal to 63.33 mg/g and 42.55 mg/g for Ba(II) and Cs(I), respectively. The temperature parameter was also studied, and the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and endothermic. The maximum separation between two ions was achieved at pH 5 (αCs/Ba = 3.3).

Kinetic and isotherms modeling of methyl orange and chromium (VI) onto hexagonal ZnO microstructures as a membrane for environmental remediation of wastewater

Globally, contamination of water by dyes and heavy metals (HMs) is a serious environmental and public health problem due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic nature. It is incumbent to treat innocuously before discharge. It is the first time, hexagonal zinc oxide (ZnO) microstructure are being employeed as a membrane in the simultaneous removal of methyl orange (MO) and chromium (Cr (VI)) from the aqueous solution. The surface chemistry of hexagonal ZnO was characterized for morphology, surface functional groups, crystalline nature, and elemental composition by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Adsorption capacity and removal efficiency was determined by the laboratory batch adsorption experiments, while nonlinear, linear kinetics and isotherm models were fitted to experimental data to investigate the adsorption process. The results exhibited that the maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) of hexagonal ZnO from the Langmuir isotherm model was 80.39 mg g^-1 and 84.10 mg g^-1 for MO and Cr (VI) respectively. According to the modeling findings, linear langmuir fitted to the experimental data with R² 0.967 and 0.971 for both MO and Cr (VI) which indicates monolayer physical adsorption of both pollutants has taken place. Whereas, kinetic study showed nonlinear pseudo-second order with R² 0.989 and 0.986 for MO and Cr (VI) model best fitted with the experimental data. The values of thermodynamics parameters Gibbs free energy change ΔG°, heat of enthalpy ΔH° and, heat of entropy ΔS° indicate that spontaneous, endothermic, and irreversible adsorption reactions occurred. Overall, it is concluded from our observations that hexagonal ZnO has the potential to be used as an eco-friendly, cost-effective adsorbent for simultaneous remaoval of both MO and Cr (VI) from water. Findings of the current investigation provide valuable insights for the development of an inexpensive, effective and sustainable filtration method for the treatment of MO and Cr (VI) synergistically.

Removal of Malachite Green Dye from Aqueous Solution by Catalytic Wet Oxidation Technique Using Ni/Kaolin as Catalyst

In this study, natural Algerian kaolin was used as a support and impregnated with nickel at different loading amounts (2 wt.%, 5 wt.%, and 7 wt.%) in order to prepare a supported catalyst. The wet impregnation technique was used in this preparation; nickel oxide (NiO) was the active phase precursor of the catalyst, and the catalysts were designated as follows: 2%, 5%, and 7% Ni/kaolin. These catalysts were put to the test in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) for degrading the organic contaminant malachite green dye (MG). Analytical techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, BET, and X-fluorescence were used to examine the structure, morphology, and chemical composition of the support and the produced catalysts. Several parameters, including temperature, catalytic dose, metal loading, hydrogen peroxide volume, and kinetic model were systematically investigated. The combination of improved parameters resulted in a significant increase in the catalytic activity, achieving a high removal rate of MG dye of 98.87%.

Study of Barium Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions Using Copper Ferrite and Copper Ferrite/rGO Magnetic Adsorbents

The development of advanced materials for the removal of heavy metal ions is a never-ending quest of environmental remediation. In this study, a facile and cost-effective approach was employed to synthesize copper ferrite (CF) and copper ferrite/reduced graphene oxide (CG) by microwave assisted combustion method for potential removal of barium ions from aqueous medium. The physiochemical characterizations indicated the formation of magnetic nanocomposite with an average crystallite size of CF and CG is 32.4 and 30.3 nm and with specific surface area of 0.66 and 5.74 m2/g. The magnetic results possess multidomain microstructures with saturation magnetization of 37.11 and 33.84 emu/g for CF and CG. The adsorption studies prove that upon addition of rGO on the spherical spinel ferrite, the adsorption performance was greatly improved for CG nanocomposite when compared with the bare CF nanoparticles. The proposed magnetic adsorbent demonstrated a relatively high Ba2+ adsorption capacity of 161.6 mg·g-1 for CG nanocomposite when compared to 86.6 mg·g-1 for CF nanoparticles under optimum conditions ( $\text{pH}=7;T={25}^{°}\text{C}$ ). The pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), and Elovich models were fitted to the kinetic data, the yielded $R^2$ value of 0.9993 (PSO) for CF and 0.9994 (PSO) for CG which is greater than the other two models, which signify that the adsorption process is chemisorption. Thermodynamic studies show that barium adsorption using CF and CG adsorbents is endothermic. The as-fabricated CuFe2O4/rGO nanocomposite represents a propitious candidate for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions.

A Literature Review of Modelling and Experimental Studies of Water Treatment by Adsorption Processes on Nanomaterials

A significant growth in the future demand for water resources is expected. Hence researchers have focused on finding new technologies to develop water filtration systems by using experimental and simulation methods. These developments were mainly on membrane-based separation technology, and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants which play an important role in wastewater treatment by means of adsorption technology. In this work, we provide valuable critical review of the latest experimental and simulation methods on wastewater treatment by adsorption on nanomaterials for the removal of pollutants. First, we review the wastewater treatment processes that were carried out using membranes and nanoparticles. These processes are highlighted and discussed in detail according to the rate of pollutant expulsion, the adsorption capacity, and the effect of adsorption on nanoscale surfaces. Then we review the role of the adsorption process in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in wastewater. We summarise the comparison based on decomposition ratios and degradation efficiency of pollutants. Therefore, the present article gives an evidence-based review of the rapid development of experimental and theoretical studies on wastewater treatment by adsorption processes. Lastly, the future direction of adsorption methods on water filtration processes is indicated.

Highly Selective Removal of Cationic Dyes from Wastewater by MgO Nanorods

The organic synthetic dyes employed in industries are carcinogenic and harmful. Dyes must be removed from wastewater to limit or eliminate their presence before dumping into the natural environment. The current study aims to investigate the use of MgO nanoparticles to eliminate basic fuchsine (BF), as a model cationic dye pollutant, from wastewater. The MgO nanorods were synthesized through a coprecipitation method. The obtained nanocomposite was characterized using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and FTIR spectroscopy. It was found that the variation of dye concentration and pH influenced the removal of BF by MgO. The adsorption capacity of 493.90 mg/g is achieved under optimum operating conditions (pH = 11, contact time = 236 min, and initial BF concentration = 200 ppm). Pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics and Freundlich isotherm models best fitted BF sorption onto MgO nanorods. The BF sorption mechanism is associated with the electrostatic attractions and hydrogen bond between the O–H group of MgO and the NH₂ groups of BF, as indicated by the pH, isotherms, and FTIR studies. The reusability study indicates that MgO was effectively used to eliminate BF in at least four continuous cycles. The investigation of MgO with different dyes suggests the high adsorption selectivity of BF, crystal violet (CV), and malachite green (MG) dyes compared with methyl orange (MO) dye. Overall, MgO nanorods can act as a potential and promising adsorbent for the efficient and rapid removal of cationic dyes (CV, MG, and BF) from wastewater.

Adsorption Behavior of Congo Red onto Barium-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles: Correlation between Experimental Results and DFT Calculations

Ba-loaded ZnO nanoparticles (Ba/ZnO) were obtained by the co-precipitation process and employed as a sorbent for Congo Red (C₃₂H₂₂N₆Na₂O₆S₂) dye (CR). Physicochemical parameters such as particle size, pH, and contact time were checked to characterize the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of Ba/ZnO NPs for CR (1614.26 mg/g) proves its potential utility in the elimination of CR dye from wastewater. The adsorption mechanism was studied via infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The geometrical parameters and electronic properties of the CR-Ba/ZnO complex, particularly the interaction energy, the density of states, and the charge transfer, highlighted the Ba-ion mediation in the chemical bond formation between CR and the surface. The interaction between CR and Ba-doped ZnO has found to show strong chemisorption with charge transfer between the SO₃^- group and adsorbed Ba²⁺ ion on the surface.

Adsorption Evaluation for the Removal of Nickel, Mercury, and Barium Ions from Single-Component and Mixtures of Aqueous Solutions by Using an Optimized Biobased Chitosan Derivative

In this experimental study, the use of 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) organic compound as a grafting agent to chitosan natural polymer (CS) was examined. One optimized chitosan derivative was synthesized, and then tested (CS-HMF), in order to uptake nickel, mercury, and barium metal ions from single- and triple-component (multi-component) aqueous solutions. The characterization of the material before and after the metal uptake was achieved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ability of the adsorption of CS-HMF was tested at pH = 6. The adjusting of temperature from 25 to 65 °C caused the increase in the adsorption capacity. The equilibrium data were fitted to the models of Langmuir and Freundlich, while the data from kinetic experiments were fitted to pseudo-1st and pseudo-2nd order models. The best fitting was achieved for the Langmuir model (higher R²). The adsorption capacity for nickel, mercury, and barium removal at 25 °C (single component) was 147, 107, and 64 (mg/g), respectively. However, the total adsorption capacity for the multi-component was 204 mg/g. A thermodynamic study was also done, and the values of ΔG⁰, ΔH⁰, and ΔS⁰ were evaluated.
