A comprehensive spectroscopic, solvatochromic and photochemical analysis of 5-hydroxyquinoline and 8-hydroxyquinoline mono-azo dyes

Combination of smartphone digital image colorimetry and UV-Vis spectrophotometry as detection systems with solidified floating organic drop microextraction as preconcentration method for the quantification of methyl red in wastewater samples

In this study, a portable smartphone-based digital image colorimetric system (SDIC) was designed and integrated with a solidified floating organic drop microextraction method (SFODME) for the quantification of methyl red in textile wastewater samples. The RGB (red, green, and blue) data were evaluated for each captured image, and the green channel was selected for quantification due to its linear response for the analyte. Under optimal conditions, an acceptable linear range was recorded for the analyte. The proposed method recorded a limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.046 mg/L. The developed microextraction method was also combined with UV-Vis spectrophotometry, which recorded an LOD value of 0.012 mg/L. Real sample analysis was carried out with textile wastewater samples to check the applicability/accuracy of the developed method, using a matrix matching calibration strategy to enhance quantification accuracy. Satisfactory percent recoveries in the range of 93.3%-114.3% and 92%-92.7% were recorded for the SFODME-SDIC and SFODME-UV methods, respectively.

Determination of water content in dimethyl sulfoxide/N,N-dimethyl formamide and methanol content in ethanol by solvatochromism of azo dye, 2-(tert-butyl)-4-methoxy-6-(naphthalen-1-yldiazenyl) phenol

A novel 2-(tert-butyl)-4-methoxy-6-(naphthalen-1-yldiazenyl)phenol (NAP) was synthesized by coupling reaction of 2-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol with diazotized naphthylamine as diazo component. The azo dye was characterized by NMR, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. The visible spectrum of NAP was recorded in different solvents and at different pHs. NAP exhibited a large wavelength shift with increasing solvent polarity, showing significant color change over a wide range in different solvents. The determination of water content in organic solvents miscible with water such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and methanol content in ethanol, which is also a common mixture were investigated with NAP which is azo dye. The present reported solvatochromic compound for the determination of water content in DMSO/DMF and methanol content in ethanol showed a fairly wide linear range compared to some previously reported solvatochromic compounds in the literature. In addition, the solvatochromism of NAP allows the determination of methanol content in ethanol, which has caused many deaths, with a fast, cheap and easy method.

Synthesis of new azobenzo[c]cinnolines and investigation of electronic spectra and spectroelectrochemical behaviours

A series of disazobenzo[c]cinnoline dyes was prepared by coupling reaction of 3,8-dihydroxybenzo[c]cinnoline with diazotised aromatic amines. The structures of these dyes were confirmed using UV-Vis, FTIR, ¹H NMR, LC-MS/MS and LC-MS/TOF spectroscopic techniques. ¹³C NMR, ¹³C-DEPT, ¹H-¹H COSY, ¹H-¹³C HMQC and ¹H-¹³C HMBC spectra of dye 12 were demonstrated in this study. In addition, the effects of the substituent attached to the phenyl ring, solvent and acid-base on the UV-Vis spectra of the dyes were investigated. Besides, voltammetric and spectroelectrochemical behaviours of four disazobenzo[c]cinnolines (2, 8, 11 and 13) in acetonitrile (ACN) solution were also evaluated. It was observed that the disazobenzo[c]cinnoline derivatives indicated reversible voltammetric behaviour in acetonitrile-tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (ACN-TBAP) solution. A square-wave potential step method coupled with optical spectroscopy was used to probe switching times and optic contrast of the dyes.

A comprehensive survey upon diverse and prolific applications of chitosan-based catalytic systems in one-pot multi-component synthesis of heterocyclic rings

Heterocyclic compounds are among the most prestigious and valuable chemical molecules with diverse and magnificent applications in various sciences. Due to the remarkable and numerous properties of the heterocyclic frameworks, the development of efficient and convenient synthetic methods for the preparation of such outstanding compounds is of great importance. Undoubtedly, catalysis has a conspicuous role in modern chemical synthesis and green chemistry. Therefore, when designing a chemical reaction, choosing and or preparing powerful and environmentally benign simple catalysts or complicated catalytic systems for an acceleration of the chemical reaction is a pivotal part of work for synthetic chemists. Chitosan, as a biocompatible and biodegradable pseudo-natural polysaccharide is one of the excellent choices for the preparation of suitable catalytic systems due to its unique properties. In this review paper, every effort has been made to cover all research articles in the field of one-pot synthesis of heterocyclic frameworks in the presence of chitosan-based catalytic systems, which were published roughly by the first quarter of 2020. It is hoped that this review paper can be a little help to synthetic scientists, methodologists, and catalyst designers, both on the laboratory and industrial scales.
