Frequency-shift based detection of BMS contrast agents using SSFP: potential for MRA

Asymmetries of the balanced SSFP profile. Part II: white matter

The signal profile measured in balanced steady-state free precession has been shown to exhibit tissue-dependent asymmetries that were hypothesized to relate to properties of the tissue microenvironment. It was proposed that balanced steady-state free precession asymmetry may reflect subtle features of the frequency distribution in tissue. The present work investigates the large balanced steady-state free precession asymmetries observed in white matter. First, maps quantifying the asymmetry are presented, which demonstrate considerable heterogeneity within white matter, with some tracts exhibiting significant asymmetry and others having a nearly symmetric profile. These maps are compared with a diffusion-tensor atlas and indicate that the highest asymmetry is found in tracts oriented perpendicular to the main magnetic field. Measurements conducted at multiple repetition times suggest that the asymmetries are characterized by relatively small frequency shifts. These results are discussed in the context of previous work studying gradient-recalled echo (GRE) signal behavior in white matter, and it is suggested that these two techniques are detecting closely related phenomena.

Gadolinium-enhanced off-resonance contrast angiography

We describe a novel physical basis and methodology for gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced MRA, which we call "off-resonance contrast angiography" (ORCA). Unlike standard contrast-enhanced (CE) MR angiography (MRA), ORCA contrast depends not on T(1) but on Gd-induced shifts in intravascular resonance frequency due to the bulk magnetic susceptibility (BMS) effects of Gd. The method was tested at 3 Tesla in phantoms with a range of dilutions of Gd-DTPA and ultrasmall iron oxide contrast agent (CA). With the use of ORCA, complete background suppression was obtained without image subtraction. As a result, catheters filled with various Gd dilutions proved to be highly conspicuous in ORCA projection images. This feature may make ORCA particularly attractive for passive catheter tracking during MR-guided endovascular procedures. Gd-induced intravascular frequency shifts were measured in human subjects and found to be in the expected range. ORCA was used to create angiograms of forearm veins that were comparable in quality to standard CE-MRA. In addition, ORCA images of the extracranial carotid bifurcation were successfully acquired during intravenous contrast administration. However, significant technical restrictions also exist, including a dependence on vessel orientation with respect to B(0), and sensitivity to static field inhomogeneities. Further study is needed to determine the practicality and potential clinical utility of this method.

Systematic investigation of balanced steady-state free precession for functional MRI in the human visual cortex at 3 Tesla

Previous studies have applied balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) to functional brain imaging. Methods that exploit the strong frequency dependence of the MR signal in the bSSFP transition band are strongly affected by field inhomogeneity and frequency drifts. Recent bSSFP studies using "on-resonance" (in the bSSFP passband) acquisition claimed that higher sensitivity was achieved compared to traditional fMRI methods. However, the contrast mechanism that generates activation-related signal changes in bSSFP imaging is not yet fully understood. We performed a systematic study of on-resonance bSSFP signal behavior using a multiecho balanced SSFP sequence with different TRs at 3 Tesla. We conclude that intravoxel dephasing, or the off-resonance averaged steady state, dominates the bSSFP signal decay and determines the bSSFP fMRI contrast. Experimental findings were confirmed by simulations based on existing theories for signal formation around blood vessels in inhomogeneous tissues. The activation-induced signal change in on-resonance bSSFP increases with TE, and the TE dependence of the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) in bSSFP is similar to that in gradient echo-planar imaging (GE-EPI). However, GE-EPI has a significantly higher CNR efficiency.
