Robust estimation of the apparent diffusion coefficient invariant to acquisition noise and physiological motion

IVIM-Morph: Motion-compensated quantitative Intra-voxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) analysis for functional fetal lung maturity assessment from diffusion-weighted MRI data

Quantitative analysis of pseudo-diffusion in diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) data shows potential for assessing fetal lung maturation and generating valuable imaging biomarkers. Yet, the clinical utility of DWI data is hindered by unavoidable fetal motion during acquisition. We present IVIM-morph, a self-supervised deep neural network model for motion-corrected quantitative analysis of DWI data using the Intra-voxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) model. IVIM-morph combines two sub-networks, a registration sub-network, and an IVIM model fitting sub-network, enabling simultaneous estimation of IVIM model parameters and motion. To promote physically plausible image registration, we introduce a biophysically informed loss function that effectively balances registration and model-fitting quality. We validated the efficacy of IVIM-morph by establishing a correlation between the predicted IVIM model parameters of the lung and gestational age (GA) using fetal DWI data of 39 subjects. Our approach was compared against six baseline methods: (1) no motion compensation, (2) affine registration of all DWI images to the initial image, (3) deformable registration of all DWI images to the initial image, (4) deformable registration of each DWI image to its preceding image in the sequence, (5) iterative deformable motion compensation combined with IVIM model parameter estimation, and (6) self-supervised deep-learning-based deformable registration. IVIM-morph exhibited a notably improved correlation with gestational age (GA) when performing in-vivo quantitative analysis of fetal lung DWI data during the canalicular phase. Specifically, over 2 test groups of cases, it achieved an Rf2 of 0.44 and 0.52, outperforming the values of 0.27 and 0.25, 0.25 and 0.00, 0.00 and 0.00, 0.38 and 0.00, and 0.07 and 0.14 obtained by other methods. IVIM-morph shows potential in developing valuable biomarkers for non-invasive assessment of fetal lung maturity with DWI data. Moreover, its adaptability opens the door to potential applications in other clinical contexts where motion compensation is essential for quantitative DWI analysis. Fast 4D elastic group-wise image registration. Convolutional interpolation revisited

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

This paper proposes a new and highly efficient implementation of 3D+t groupwise registration based on the free-form deformation paradigm.

METHODS

Deformation is posed as a cascade of 1D convolutions, achieving great reduction in execution time for evaluation of transformations and gradients.

RESULTS

The proposed method has been applied to 4D cardiac MRI and 4D thoracic CT monomodal datasets. Results show an average runtime reduction above 90%, both in CPU and GPU executions, compared with the classical tensor product formulation.

CONCLUSIONS

Our implementation, although fully developed for the metric sum of squared differences, can be extended to other metrics and its adaptation to multiresolution strategies is straightforward. Therefore, it can be extremely useful to speed up image registration procedures in different applications where high dimensional data are involved.

Influence of Acquisition Time on MR Image Quality Estimated with Nonparametric Measures Based on Texture Features

Correlation of parametrized image texture features (ITF) analyses conducted in different regions of interest (ROIs) overcomes limitations and reliably reflects image quality. The aim of this study is to propose a nonparametrical method and classify the quality of a magnetic resonance (MR) image that has undergone controlled degradation by using textural features in the image. Images of 41 patients, 17 women and 24 men, aged between 23 and 56 years were analyzed. T2-weighted sagittal sequences of the lumbar spine, cervical spine, and knee and T2-weighted coronal sequences of the shoulder and wrist were generated. The implementation of parallel imaging with the use of GRAPPA2, GRAPPA3, and GRAPPA4 led to a substantial reduction in the scanning time but also degraded image quality. The number of degraded image textural features was correlated with the scanning time. Longer scan times correlated with markedly higher ITF image persistence in comparison with images computed with reduced scan times. Higher ITF preservation was observed in images of bones in the spine and femur as compared to images of soft tissues, i.e., tendons and muscles. Finally, a nonparametrized image quality assessment based on an analysis of the ITF, computed for different tissues, correlating with the changes in acquisition time of the MR images, was successfully developed. The correlation between acquisition time and the number of reproducible features present in an MR image was found to yield the necessary assumptions to calculate the quality index.
