Effects of hot water pre-extraction on surface properties of bagasse soda pulp

Valorization of Wheat Straw for the Paper Industry: Pre-extraction of Reducing Sugars and Its Effect on Pulping and Papermaking Properties

Cleaner production of sugars and pulp from renewable feedstocks has captured significant scientific attention in the recent past because they can be used for various end applications. In the papermaking industry, a major fraction of hemicellulosic sugars is lost during the pulping. The present study aims at retrieving these hemicellulosic sugars through alkali-, hot-water-, and acid-mediated extraction prior to pulping, which otherwise would have been lost during pulping and washing of pulp. These retrieved sugars can be used as feedstocks for renewable energy and value-added products. Different pretreatments were applied, aided with varying temperature, chemical concentrations, and time. Substantial amounts of total reducing sugars (TRSs) up to 21.98, 13.2, and 15.01% were extracted prior to pulping by acid, alkali, and hot-water pretreatments. Compositions of mono sugars present in the treated liquor were also characterized and confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The morphological changes in the wheat straw after pre-extraction were studied using the field emission gun scanning electron microscopy technique. Pulping of untreated and pretreated wheat straw was carried out at different alkali charges (12, 14, and 16% NaOH). Among all, acid-pretreated straw showed an increase in pulp yield by 10.9% at a 16% alkali charge. Physical strength properties of different pulps were further examined. Alkali- and hot-water-pretreated straw pulp retained 94.26 and 83.16% tensile indices and 92.43 and 87.02% burst indices, respectively. An increase in tear index up to 4.32, 2.01, and 2.30% for alkali-, hot-water-, and acid-pretreated straw pulp was achieved, respectively. Hot-water- and alkali-pretreated wheat straw was observed to be conducive for paper production. The integrated use of wheat straw for extraction of underutilized sugars and pulp production in this way may serve as a key stepping stone for future biorefinery designs in pulp and paper mills.

Comparison between gelatin/carboxymethyl cellulose and gelatin/carboxymethyl nanocellulose in tramadol drug loaded capsule

The comparison between Tramadol drug loaded microspheres prepared from gelatin/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) and those prepared from gelatin/sodium carboxymethyl nanocellulose (NaCMNC) in presence of glutaraldehyde (GA) as cross linker was carried out. Cellulose isolated from rice straw was hydrolyzed using 65% H₂SO₄ to prepare nanoparticles with average particle size ranging from 44 to 66 nm. Various formulations of gelatin/NaCMC and gelatin/NACMNC were prepared with different ratios of amounts of gelatin, NaCMC/NaCMNC, and GA. Microspheres were characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The FTIR spectroscopy results confirmed the structure of microsphere and the absence of chemical interactions among Tramadol drug, polymer, and crosslinking agent. The ultraviolet spectroscopy showed 68% efficiency of the drug encapsulation using cellulose, while 55% for nanocellulose. The equilibrium water uptake decreased from 646 to 329% for cellulose microspheres, when the amount of GA increased from 5 to 10 mL. In contrast, the equilibrium water uptake decreased significantly from 501 to 33.7% for nanocellulose microspheres. The yield percentage enhanced from 54.67 to 80% for nanocellulose microspheres. The in vitro release rate was also calculated. The percent cumulative release of drug was significantly increased at the first 2 h and then a slow increase was further noticed. In general, the nanocellulose microsphere showed lower release rates than cellulose. None of the prepared microsphere presented 100% drug release until 12 h.

Balancing the effect of pretreatment severity on hemicellulose extraction and pulping performance during auto-hydrolysis prior to kraft pulping of acacia wood

When using a combination of pre-extraction and chemical pulping, a high yield of sugar recovery and minimal negative effect on the subsequent pulping step are expected. In this work, the P factor was utilized to investigate the effect of auto-hydrolysis severity on sugar recovery, removal of the main component, and impact on the kraft pulping of acacia wood chips. Using a P factor of 235, 84.34% of the polysaccharides in 14.05 g L^-1 of dissolved sugars could be obtained. In addition, the soluble sugars were easily separated with a recovery yield of 3.54 g ·L^-1 and Mw of 4,690 g mol^-1 by direct precipitation using organic solvents. However, a maximum of 22.14 g L^-1 of dissolved sugars was obtained with approximately 72.53% polysaccharides and Mw of 2,198 g mol^-1 for a P factor of 601. Moreover, nearly 50% of the degraded carbohydrates remained in the auto-hydrolyzed wood chips. The decrease in the mass of pentosan, holocellulose, and klason lignin was 62, 30, and 8.76%, respectively. With intensifying severity, the screened yield and viscosity of pulps decreased markedly, whileas the Kappa number increased. No significant differences were observed in the morphology of the resultant fibers. Moreover, there was a decrease in the physical strength of the pulps due to the loss of the intrinsic strength of the pulp fibers, which in turn resulted from the cellulose damage. The combustion performance of the resultant pulping black liquor is improved due to the higher lignin content.
