Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this paper we propose the association of β-glycerophosphate (βGP) and calcium-hydroxide with chitosan (CH) to formulate a porous bioactive scaffold suitable as a cell-homing platform for dentin regeneration. METHODS Calcium hydroxide and βGP solutions were incorporated into chitosan to modulate scaffold architecture and composition by a phase separation technique. Architecture, chemical composition, and degradability were evaluated, and biological characterizations were performed by the seeding of dental pulp cells (DPCs) onto scaffolds, or by cultivating them in contact with leachable components (extracts), to determine cytocompatibility and odontoblastic differentiation. Cell-free scaffolds were then positioned in intimate contact with a 3D culture of DPCs in a pulp-in-a-chip platform under simulated pulp pressure. Cell mobilization and odontoblastic marker expression were evaluated. Deposition of mineralized matrix was assessed in direct contact with dentin, in the absence of osteogenic factors. RESULTS Incorporation of calcium hydroxide and βGP generated a stable porous chitosan scaffold containing Ca-P nanoglobule topography (CH-Ca-βGP), which favored cell viability, alkaline phosphatase activity, and mineralized matrix deposition by cells seeded onto the scaffold structure and at a distance. The pulp-in-a-chip assay denoted its chemotactic and bioactive potential, since dentin sialoprotein-positive DPCs from 3D culture adhered to CH-Ca-βGP more than to plain chitosan. The higher deposition of mineralized matrix onto the scaffold and surrounding dentin was also observed. SIGNIFICANCE A CH-Ca-βGP scaffold creates a microenvironment capable of mobilizing DPC migration toward its structure, harnessing the odontogenic potential and culminating in the expression of a highly mineralizing phenotype, key factors for a cell-homing strategy.

Abstract
Charging and aggregation processes of titania nanosheets (TNS) were extensively studied in the presence of oppositely charged or like-charged polyelectrolytes in aqueous dispersions. The surface charge of the TNS was systematically varied by the pH; therefore, positive nanosheets were obtained at pH 4 and negative ones at pH 10. Strong adsorption of poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) of high negative line charge density on the TNS was observed at pH 4, leading to charge neutralization and reversal of the original sign of charge of the nanosheets. The adsorption of like-charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) was also feasible through a hydrophobic interaction. The predominating interparticle forces were mainly of the DLVO-type, but additional patch-charge attraction also took place in the case of PSS at low surface coverage. The TNS was found to be hydrophilic at pH 10 and no adsorption of like-charged PSS was possible because of strong electrostatic repulsion between the polyelectrolyte and the surface. The PDADMAC showed high affinity to the oppositely charged TNS surface in alkaline dispersions, giving rise to neutral and positively charged nanosheets at appropriate polyelectrolyte doses. Formation of a saturated PDADMAC layer on the TNS led to high resistance against salt-induced aggregation through the electrosteric stabilization mechanism. These results shed light on the importance of polyelectrolyte concentration, ionic strength, and charge balance on the colloidal stability of TNS, which is especially important in applications, where the nanosheets are dispersed in complex solution containing polymeric compounds and electrolytes.

Abstract
Titanium oxide particles of various morphologies have been prepared for applications of scientific or industrial interest in recent decades. Besides development of novel synthetic routes and solid-state characterization of the obtained particles, colloidal stability of titanium oxide dispersions was the focus of numerous research groups due to the high importance of this topic in applications in heterogeneous systems. The influence of dissolved ionic compounds, including monovalent salts, multivalent ions and polyelectrolytes, on the charging and aggregation behaviour of titanium oxide materials of spherical and elongated structures will be discussed in the present review.

Abstract
In the present study, we report the dispersion of titanate nanotubes (TiONts) via polymer grafting (PolyEthylene Glycol, PEG) or polymer adsorption (polyethylene imine, PEI) where different TiONts/polymer ratios have been investigated. The TiONts/PEI and TiONts/PEG nanohybrids were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as by zeta potential measurements in order to determine both their dispersion state and stability in water (at different pH for zetametry). The nature of the chemical bonds at the surface of these nanohybrids was investigated by Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy while the grafting densities of PEG on the nanotubes were quantified by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The nanohybrids reported here are promising tools for biotechnology applications due to their tubular morphology, their very good dispersion in water and the reactivity of their surface.
