Evaluation of compressive strength, surface microhardness, solubility and antimicrobial effect of glass ionomer dental cement reinforced with silver doped carbon nanotube fillers

BACKGROUND

Conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs) are currently the most widely used dental cements due to their chemical bonding into tooth structure, release of fluoride, and ease of manipulation and usage. One of their drawbacks is their low mechanical properties and high solubility. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could be utilized in dentistry due to their several potential applications. CNTs can be used as fillers to reinforce polymers or other materials. Additionally, silver (Ag) nanoparticles are highly effective at preventing dental biofilm and enhancing mechanical properties.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the present in vitro study is to evaluate the compressive strength, surface microhardness, solubility, and antimicrobial effect of the conventional GIC reinforced with manual blending of 0.01 wt.% Ag doped CNT fillers.

METHODS

The control group was prepared by mixing dental GIC powder with their liquid. The innovatively reinforced dental GIC group was prepared by incorporating 0.01 wt.% Ag doped CNT fillers into the GIC powder prior to liquid mixing. Chemical characterization was performed by XRF. While, physical characterization was done by measuring film thickness and initial setting time. The compressive strength, surface microhardness, solubility, and antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus mutans bacteria using an agar diffusion test were measured. The data was statistically analyzed using independent sample t-tests to compare mean values of compressive strength, surface microhardness, solubility, and antimicrobial activity (p ≤ 0.05).

RESULTS

The results revealed that innovative reinforced GIC with 0.01 wt.% Ag doped CNT fillers showed higher mean compressive strength, surface microhardness, and antimicrobial effect values than the conventional GIC control group; there was no significant difference between different groups in relation to the solubility test (P ≤ 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The innovatively reinforced GIC with 0.01 wt.% Ag doped CNT fillers had the opportunity to be used as an alternative to conventional GIC dental cements.

Wear effects between polymethyl methacrylate occlusal splints and opposing dentin surfaces during bruxism mimicking events

OBJECTIVES

To compare the surface wear rate between polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based occlusal splints and opposing dentin-exposed teeth in bruxism simulating models.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PMMA-based occlusal splints and extracted premolars were tested on a chewing stimulator at 30,000 or 60,000 cycles. Dentin wear was measured under a stereomicroscope and PMMA wear was determined with an optical profilometer. In addition, wear surface topography was assessed and quantified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

RESULTS

Wear rate of PMMA was significantly greater (11 times) than that of dentin specimens at 60,000 cycles, though these findings were not observed at 30,000 cycles. When comparing wear rates within each group at different duration cycles, PMMA surfaces exhibited an average wear rate 1.4 times higher with high duration cycles, while dentin surfaces displayed a marginal decrease in wear. In SEM micrographs, PMMA surfaces displayed more wear abrasion lines with higher duration cycles. However, dentin surfaces did not exhibit major differences between low and high duration cycles.

CONCLUSION

Wear rate on PMMA-based occlusal splints remarkably increases upon high chewing cycles mimicking bruxism comparing with the rate on dentin. Hence, it is reasonable for bruxing patients to wear single-arch PMMA-based occlusal splints to protect opposing dentin-exposed teeth.

Mathematical tools for recovery of the load on the fissure according to the micro-CT results

In the present paper X-ray microtomographic research of a molar tooth was conducted. The study revealed regions with a reduced mineral density in the vicinity of the fissure tip. The basic assumption investigated is that corrosion induced enamel mineral density decrease is enhanced by high tensile stresses generated by mechanical load on the occlusal surface of the tooth during crushing of food. Magnitude and location of tensile stress concentration occurs at the fissure tip and may be determined by solving the problem of the stress-strain state of the tooth crown enamel with a wedge-shaped notch. The study of stresses in the vicinity of fissure tip make it possible to construct the boundaries of enhanced enamel virtual fracture. Comparison of the sizes and locations of areas with a reduced enamel mineral density with the sizes and locations of areas of virtual enamel fracture made it possible to establish their approximate congruence. This circumstance made it possible to recreate by mathematical means the nature and magnitude of the force load on the lateral surface of the fissure. Degree of influence of the main parameters of the fissure on the geometrical characteristics of the virtual fracture, such as its area and diameters, were determined.
