A novel and sensitive hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide functionalized Fe decorated MWCNTs modified carbon paste electrode for the selective determination of Quercetin

Signal-Enhanced Electrochemical Determination of Quercetin with Poly(chromotrope fb)-Modified Pencil Graphite Electrode in Vegetables and Fruits

A novel signal-enhanced electrochemical sensing strategy was constructed for quercetin determination with a peculiarly developed poly(chromotrope fb)-modified activated pencil graphite electrode in vegetables and fruits. The oxidation signal of quercetin at 118 mV in an alcoholic solution served as the analytical response. The produced platform, characterized by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, could detect 1.9 nM of quercetin in the range of 0.01-1.2 μM. The extracted quercetin contents of red onion, red cabbage, cranberry, black mulberry, black raisin, and carob were determined by both the developed method and UV-visible spectroscopy. The results were statistically evaluated at the 95% confidence level, and no significant difference between the results was found.

2D MXene/graphene nanocomposite preparation and its electrochemical performance towards the identification of nicotine level in human saliva

The quantitative analysis of neurological drugs is critical since the kinetics of body fluids is strongly dependent on the dosage of the drug levels. Thus, the study of neurological medicines is significant because of the major diseases connected to it, for instance, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Herein, a 2D hybrid MXene/graphene (MX/Gr) film was synthesized through a top-down approach and utilized to prepare an electrochemical transducer for the electrochemical sensing of nicotine. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful incorporation of MX with Gr sheets. The high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to confirm the formation of MX, graphene sheets and the MX/Gr hybrid film. Furthermore, the MX/Gr hybrid film composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was prepared to selectively detect the nicotine in phosphate buffer medium (0.1 M PBS, pH~7.4). Under the optimized condition, the MX/Gr/GCE based sensor provided a linear response against nicotine from 1 to 55 µM and 30 nM - 600 nM with the lowest limit of detections (LOD) of 290 nM and 0.28 nM by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and amperometry, respectively. This newly developed MX/Gr hybrid film modified electrode displayed a remarkable selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility for accurate detection of nicotine. Finally, this new sensor was applied to detect nicotine in human/artificial saliva samples with high accuracy.

Zinc Oxide–Graphene Nanocomposite-Based Sensor for the Electrochemical Determination of Cetirizine

A nanocomposite electrode of graphene (Gr) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles was fabricated to study the electrochemical oxidation behavior of an anti-inflammatory drug, i.e., cetirizine (CET). The voltametric response of CET for bare CPE, Gr/CPE, ZnO/CPE, and the ZnO-Gr nanocomposite electrode was studied. The modifier materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) to comprehend the surface morphology of the utilized modifiers. The influence of pH, scan rate, and accumulation time on the electrooxidation of CET was examined. It was found that the electrochemical oxidation of CET was diffusion-controlled, in which two protons and two electrons participated. The detection limit was found to be 2.8 × 10−8 M in a linearity range of 0.05–4.0 µM. Study of excipients was also performed, and it was found that they had negligible interference with the peak potential of CET. The validation and utility of the fabricated nanocomposite sensor material were examined by analyzing clinical and biological samples. Stability testing of the nanocomposite electrode was conducted to assess the reproducibility, determining that the developed biosensor has good stability and high efficiency in producing reproducible results.

Development of a spiramycin sensor based on adsorptive stripping linear sweep voltammetry and its application for the determination of spiramycin in chicken egg samples

Herein, an adsorptive stripping linear sweep voltammetric technique was described to determine spiramycin, a macrolide antibiotic, using a carboxylic multiwalled glassy carbon electrode modified with carbon nanotubes. The main principle of the analytical methodology proposed was based on the preconcentration of spiramycin by open-circuit accumulation of the macrolide onto the modified electrode surface. As a result of the adsorption affinity of spiramycin to the modified surface, the sensitivity of the glassy carbon electrode was significantly increased for the determination of spiramycin. The electrochemical behavior of spiramycin was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and the irreversible anodic peak observed was measured as an analytical signal in the methodology. The proposed electrochemical sensing platform was quite linear in the range of 0.100–40.0 µM of spiramycin concentration with a correlation coefficient of 0.9993. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification were 0.028 and 0.094 µM, respectively. The intra- and interday repeatability of the proposed sensor was within acceptable limits. Finally, the applicability of the electrochemical methodology was examined by determining the drug content of chicken egg samples spiked with spiramycin standard. A rapid and easy extraction technique was performed to extract spiked spiramycin from the egg samples. The extraction technique followed had good recovery values between 85.3 ± 4.0% and 93.4 ± 1.9%.

New Potentiometric Screen-printed Sensors for Determination of Trimebutine Drug in Tablets, Serum and Urine Samples

A new sensit4e and select4e modified screen printed electrodes (MSPEs) and carbon paste electrodes (MCPEs) were studied in order to determine trimbutine maleate (TM) in pure, tablets, urine, and serum samples. These sensors were embodied with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) since it improved the quality of the sensors in presence of potassium tetrakis (p-chlorophenyl) borate (KTpClPB) ionophore. A good Nernstian response for the constructed sensors, at optimum paste composition, was exhibited for determination of TM in concentration range of 1.5 × 10^-7 - 1.0 × 10^-2 and 1.0 × 10^-7- 1.0 × 10^-2 mol L^-1 at 25 °C with detection limit of 1.5 × 10^-7 and 1.0 × 10^-7 mol L^-1 for MCPE and MSPE, respect4ely. It seemed that the potential of the electrodes was independent on pH in the range of 2.0-8.0, 2.0-8.5, 2.0-8.5, and 2.0-9.0 g4ing slope as 56.77 ± 1.11, 57.82 ± 0.54, 57.95 ± 0.37, and 58.99 ± 0.28 mV decade^-1 for electrodes 1, 2, 3 and 4, respect4ely. MCPEs and MSPEs gave response time about 8 and 6 s with long lifetime (more than 3 and 5 months), respect4ely. A high select4ity of sensors was observed for TM regarding to a large number of interfering species. The constructed sensors were successfully applied for determination of TM in pure form, its pharmaceutical preparations and biological fluids using standard addition, calibration, and potentiometric titration methods with high precision and accuracy. The results showed a good agreement between the proposed method and the HPLC official method.

Application of Electrochemical Sensors Based on Carbon Nanomaterials for Detection of Flavonoids

Flavonoids have a variety of physiological activities such as anti-free radicals, regulating hormone levels, antibacterial factors, and anti-cancer factors, which are widely present in edible and medicinal plants. Real-time detection of flavonoids is a key step in the quality control of diverse matrices closely related to social, economic, and health issues. Traditional detection methods are time-consuming and require expensive equipment and complicated working conditions. Therefore, electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity and fast detection speed have aroused extensive research interest. Carbon nanomaterials are preferred material in improving the performance of electrochemical sensing. In this paper, we review the progress of electrochemical sensors based on carbon nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon and graphene quantum dots, mesoporous carbon, and carbon black for detecting flavonoids in food and drug homologous substances in the last four years. In addition, we look forward to the prospects and challenges of this research field.

A biomass-derived porous carbon-based nanocomposite for voltammetric determination of quercetin

Porous carbon was prepared from wheat flour by alkali treatment and carbonization. The resulting biomass-derived porous carbon (BPC) was employed to prepare a Pt-Au-BPC nanocomposite by a hydrothermal method. The material was then placed on the surface of a carbon ionic liquid electrode (CILE). The Pt-Au-BPC was characterized by SEM, XPS, and the modified CILE by electrochemical methods. They revealed a porous structure, a large specific surface with high conductivity. Pt-Au-BPC/CILE was applied to the sensitive determination of quercetin. Electrochemical response was studied by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimized experimental conditions, the oxidation peak current (measured at 0.48 V vs. Ag/AgCl by DPV) increases linearly in the 0.15 to 6.0 μM and in the 10.0 to 25.0 μM quercetin concentration range. The detection limit is 50.0 nM (at 3σ). The Pt-Au-BPC/CILE was applied to the direct determination of quercetin in ginkgo tablets sample and gave satisfactory results. Graphite/Ag/AgCl nanocomposite as a new and highly efficient electrocatalyst for selective electroxidation of oxalic acid and its assay in real samples

Herein, graphite/Ag/AgCl nanocomposite is introduced as a new electrocatalyst material for the electrocatalytic oxidation of oxalic acid. Graphite/Ag/AgCl was synthesized by electroless deposition of nano-sized metallic silver and then silver chloride on graphite powder. The material obtained was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The nanocomposite was mixed with n-eicosane as binder and used as carbon paste electrode for electrocatalytic oxidation of oxalic acid (OA). The graphite/Ag/AgCl nanocomposite electrode showed good catalytic activity for the electroxidation of oxalic acid in H₃PO₄ solution (0.05 mol L^-1), leading to a distinct decrease in anodic overpotential (100 mV) and a substantial increase in anodic peak current (about 10 times), in comparison with the unmodified carbon paste electrode. Using the developed nanocomposite electrode and differential pulse voltammetry method, it became possible to determine oxalic acid in the concentration range of 0.01-0.75 mmol L^-1 with detection limit of 3.7 × 10^-6 mol L^-1. The electrode showed very high sensitivity of 1341.3 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 which is remarkably better than the previously reported oxalic acid sensors. Thanks to high sensitivity and good selectivity of the electrode, the proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of OA in human urine and spinach samples. The satisfactory results obtained, confirmed the applicability of this sensor in the practical analysis.

The performance of cathodically pretreated boron-doped diamond electrode in cationic surfactant media for enhancing the adsorptive stripping voltammetric determination of catechol-containing flavonoid quercetin in apple juice

In the present paper, an electroanalytical methodology was developed for the determination of an important catechol-containing flavonoid derivative, quercetin using adsorptive stripping voltammetry at a cathodically pretreated boron-doped diamond electrode. In cyclic voltammetry, the compound showed a couple of oxidation/reduction peak at low positive potentials, and additional two oxidation peaks at more positive potentials. The sensitivity of the stripping voltammetric measurements was significantly improved when the cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was present in the electrolyte solution. Using square-wave stripping mode, a highly linear analytical curve was obtained for quercetin determination in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution (pH 4.7) containing 3 × 10^-4 M CTAB at + 0.37 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) (after 30 s accumulation at open-circuit condition) in the range of 0.5-200 ng mL^-1 (1.7 × 10^-9-3.3 × 10^-7 M), with a detection limit of 0.132 ng mL^-1 (4.4 × 10^-10 M). As an example, the practical applicability of proposed method was successfully tested with the measurement of quercetin concentration in commercial apple juice samples.
