Abstract
Traditional single nucleic acid assays can only detect one target while multiple nucleic acid assays can detect multiple targets simultaneously, providing comprehensive and accurate information. Fluorescent microspheres in multiplexed nucleic acid detection offer high sensitivity, specificity, multiplexing, flexibility, and scalability advantages, enabling precise, real-time results and supporting clinical diagnosis and research. However, multiplexed assays face challenges like complexity, costs, and sample handling issues. The review explores the recent advancements and applications of fluorescent microspheres in multiple nucleic acid detection. It discusses the versatility of fluorescent microspheres in various fields, such as disease diagnosis, drug screening, and personalized medicine. The review highlights the possibility of adjusting the performance of fluorescent microspheres by modifying concentrations and carrier forms, allowing for tailored applications. It emphasizes the potential of fluorescent microsphere technology in revolutionizing nucleic acid detection and advancing health, disease treatment, and medical research.

Abstract
Over the past decade, carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as some of the extremely popular carbon nanostructures for diverse applications. The advantages of sustainable CDs, characterized by their exceptional photoluminescence (PL), high water solubility/dispersibility, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility, substantiate their potential for a wide range of applications in sensing and biology. Moreover, nature offers plant- and animal-derived precursors for the sustainable synthesis of CDs and their doped variants. These sources are not only readily accessible, inexpensive, and renewable but are also environmentally benign green biomass. This review article presents in detail the production of sustainable CDs from various animal and human biomass through bottom-up synthetic methods, including hydrothermal, microwave, microwave-hydrothermal, and pyrolysis methods. The resulting CDs exhibit a uniform size distribution, possibility of heteroatom doping, surface passivation, and remarkable excitation wavelength-dependent/independent emission and up-conversion PL characteristics. Consequently, these CDs have been successfully utilized in multiple applications, such as bioimaging and the detection of various analytes, including heavy metal ions. Finally, a comprehensive assessment is presented, highlighting the prospects and challenges associated with animal/human biomass-derived CDs for multifaceted applications.

Abstract
The catalytic etherification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with the waste ethanol into high-energy-density 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) has been considered as a promising way to simultaneously alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. However, the energy consumption is rather high as the synthesis of EMF requires a high temperature to open the etherification reaction. Herein, we demonstrate a clever design and construction of acidified biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (BCQDs)-modified UiO-66-NH2 that is immobilized on cermasite (H+/BCQDs/UiO-66-NH2@ceramsite), which can use the IR light as driven energy and wasted ethanol to trigger the catalytic conversion of HMF into EMF. The temperature on the surface of the immobilized catalyst could reach as high as 139 °C within 15 min IR irradiation. Due to the aforementioned advantages, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited excellent IR-triggered catalytic performance toward EMF production, where the EMF yields and selectivity were as high as 45% and 65%, respectively. The high catalytic performance originates from the outstanding photo-to-thermal conversion by the introduction of BCQDs, as well as the strong interactions between BCQDs and UiO-66-NH2 that boosts the etherification reactions. The immobilization of catalyst on cermasite not only benefits catalyst recycling, but more importantly reduces catalyst loss during practical applications. The conceptual study shown here provides new viewpoints in designing energy-effective materials for the conversion of wastes into high-value-added resources.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) as new nanomaterials have attracted much attention in recent years due to their unique characteristics. Notably, structure and interface modification (carbon core, edge, defects, and functional groups) of CDs have been considered as valid methods to regulate their properties, which contain electron transfer effect, electrochemical activity, fluorescence luminescent, and so on. Additionally, CDs with ultrasmall size, excellent dispersibility, high specific surface area, and abundant functional groups can guarantee positive and extraordinary effects in electrical energy storage and conversion. Therefore, CDs are used to couple with other materials by constructing a special interface structure to enhance their properties. Here, diverse structural and interfacial modifications of CDs with various heteroatoms and synergy effects are systematically analyzed. And not only several main syntheses of CDs-based composites (CDs/X) are summarized but also the merit and demerit of CDs/X in electrical energy storage are discussed. Finally, the applications of CDs/X in energy storage devices (supercapacitors, batteries) and electrocatalysts for practical applications are discussed. This review mainly provides a comprehensive summary and future prospect for synthesis, modification, and electrochemical applications of CDs.

Abstract
Carbon-based quantum dots (CDs) are mainly divided into two sub-groups; carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which exhibit outstanding photoluminescence (PL) properties, low toxicity, superior biocompatibility and facile functionalization. Regarding these features, they have been promising candidates for biomedical science and engineering applications. In this work, we reviewed the efforts made to modify these zero-dimensional nano-materials to obtain the best properties for bio-imaging, drug and gene delivery, cancer therapy, and bio-sensor applications. Five main surface modification techniques with outstanding results are investigated, including doping, surface functionalization, polymer capping, nano-composite and core-shell structures, and the drawbacks and challenges in each of these methods are discussed.
