Properties ofα-Fe2O3/graphene nanohydrid synthesized by a simple hydrothermal/solution mixing method

Internal Polymerization of Epoxy Group of Epoxidized Natural Rubber by Ferric Chloride and Formation of Strong Network Structure

In this work, studies are carried out to understand the crosslinking reaction of epoxidized natural rubber (50 mol% epoxy, ENR-50) by metal ion namely ferric ion (Fe3+, FeCl3, ferric chloride). It is found that a small amount of FeCl3 can cure ENR to a considerable extent. A direct interaction of the ferric ion with the epoxy group as well as internal polymerization enable the ENR to be cured in an efficient manner. It was also found that with the increased concentration of FeCl3, the crosslinking density of the matrix increased and therefore, the ENR offers higher mechanical properties (i.e., modulus and tensile strength). In addition, the glass transition temperature (tg) of ENR vulcanizate is increased with increasing concentration of FeCl3. Moreover, the thermal degradation temperature (Td) of the ENR-FeCl3 compound was shifted toward higher temperature as increasing concentration FeCl3.

Coatings of magnetic composites of iron oxide and carbon nitride for photocatalytic water purification

Magnetic composites of iron oxide (α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) and carbon nitride materials (CN) were synthesized via a microwave assisted hydrothermal method starting from iron salts and CN, which was obtained by thermal decomposition of dicyandiamide. The as-prepared composites with iron oxide loadings of 0.5 ω%-6 ω% were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy, magnetization measurements, nitrogen adsorption measurements and thermogravimetric analyzes (TGA). The composites were examined for the degradation rate of an aqueous rhodamine B (RhB) solution under visible light irradiation. The magnetic composite α-Fe2O3(3 ω%)/CN enables 82% degradation of RhB within 90 min. Therefore, this material was selected for an immobilization approach and deposited using a spray coating technique on a magnetic polymer substrate. Coatings with loadings from 1.1 mg to 3.6 mg were compared with regard to their activity for the photocatalytic degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. The substrate loaded with 0.4 mg cm-2 catalyst enables a RhB degradation of 61% within 8 h. Photocatalytic degradation of triclosan and ethinyl estradiol was also successful and both compounds were degraded with up to 46% of the initial concentration within 8 h. ICP-MS measurements of the pollutant solutions after photocatalytic treatment showed that leaching does not occur.

Iron oxides/graphene hybrid structures - Preparation, modification, and application as fillers of polymer composites

The current status of knowledge regarding magnetic hybrid structures based on graphene or carbon nanotubes with various forms of iron oxides is reviewed. The paper starts with a summary of the preparation and properties of iron oxide nanoparticles, both untreated and coated with silica or polymer layers. In the next section, organic-inorganic hybrid materials obtained as a result of a combination of graphene or carbon nanotubes and iron chemical compounds are characterized and discussed. These hybrids constitute an increasing percentage of all consumable high performance biomedical, electronic, and energy materials due to their valuable properties and low production costs. The potential of their application as components of materials used in corrosion protection, catalysis, spintronics, biomedicine, photoelectrochemical water splitting and groundwater remediation, as well as magnetic nanoparticles in polymer matrices, are also presented. The last part of this review article is focused on reporting the most recent developments in design and the understanding of the properties of polymer composites reinforced with nanometer-sized iron oxide/graphene and iron oxide/carbon nanotubes hybrid fillers. The discussion presents comparative analysis of the magnetic, electromagnetic shielding, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of polymer composites with various iron oxide/graphene structures. It is shown that the introduction of hybrid filler nanoparticles into polymer matrices enhances both the macro- and microproperties of final composites as a result of synergistic effects of individual components and the simultaneous formation of an oriented filler network in the polymer. The reinforcing effect is related to the structure and geometry of hybrid nanoparticles applied as a filler, the interactions between the filler particles, their concentration in a composite, and the method of composite processing.
