Toward Smart Sensing by MXene

The Internet of Things era has promoted enormous research on sensors, communications, data fusion, and actuators. Among them, sensors are a prerequisite for acquiring the environmental information for delivering to an artificial data center to make decisions. The MXene-based sensors have aroused tremendous interest because of their extraordinary performances. In this review, the electrical, electronic, and optical properties of MXenes are first introduced. Next, the MXene-based sensors are discussed according to the sensing mechanisms such as electronic, electrochemical, and optical methods. Initially, biosensors are introduced based on chemiresistors and field-effect transistors. Besides, the wearable pressure sensor is demonstrated with piezoresistive devices. Third, the electrochemical methods include amperometry and electrochemiluminescence as examples. In addition, the optical approaches refer to surface plasmonic resonance and fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Moreover, the prospects are delivered of multimodal data fusion toward complicated human-like senses. Eventually, future opportunities for MXene research are conveyed in the new material discovery, structure design, and proof-of-concept devices.

Applications of Graphene in Five Senses, Nervous System, and Artificial Muscles

Graphene remains of great interest in biomedical applications because of biocompatibility. Diseases relating to human senses interfere with life satisfaction and happiness. Therefore, the restoration by artificial organs or sensory devices may bring a bright future by the recovery of senses in patients. In this review, we update the most recent progress in graphene based sensors for mimicking human senses such as artificial retina for image sensors, artificial eardrums, gas sensors, chemical sensors, and tactile sensors. The brain-like processors are discussed based on conventional transistors as well as memristor related neuromorphic computing. The brain-machine interface is introduced for providing a single pathway. Besides, the artificial muscles based on graphene are summarized in the means of actuators in order to react to the physical world. Future opportunities remain for elevating the performances of human-like sensors and their clinical applications.

Applications of 2D-Layered Palladium Diselenide and Its van der Waals Heterostructures in Electronics and Optoelectronics

The rapid development of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides has been possible owing to their special structures and remarkable properties. In particular, palladium diselenide (PdSe₂) with a novel pentagonal structure and unique physical characteristics have recently attracted extensive research interest. Consequently, tremendous research progress has been achieved regarding the physics, chemistry, and electronics of PdSe₂. Accordingly, in this review, we recapitulate and summarize the most recent research on PdSe₂, including its structure, properties, synthesis, and applications. First, a mechanical exfoliation method to obtain PdSe₂ nanosheets is introduced, and large-area synthesis strategies are explained with respect to chemical vapor deposition and metal selenization. Next, the electronic and optoelectronic properties of PdSe₂ and related heterostructures, such as field-effect transistors, photodetectors, sensors, and thermoelectric devices, are discussed. Subsequently, the integration of systems into infrared image sensors on the basis of PdSe₂ van der Waals heterostructures is explored. Finally, future opportunities are highlighted to serve as a general guide for physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers. Therefore, this comprehensive review may shed light on the research conducted by the 2D material community.

Mo2C/graphene heterostructures: low temperature chemical vapor deposition on liquid bimetallic Sn-Cu and hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalytic properties

Thin 2D Mo₂C/graphene vertical heterostructures have attracted significant attention due to their potential application as electrodes in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and energy storage. A common drawback in the chemical vapor deposition synthesis of these structures is the demand for high temperature growth, which should be higher than the melting temperature of the metal catalyst. The most common metallic catalyst is Cu, which has a melting temperature of 1084 °C. Here, we report the growth of thin, ∼200 nm in thickness, semitransparent micrometer-sized Mo₂C domains and Mo₂C/graphene heterostructures at lower temperatures using liquid Sn-Cu alloys. No Sn-associated defects are observed, making the alloy an appealing growth substrate. Raman spectroscopy reveals the vertical interaction between graphene and Mo₂C, as shown by the variation in the strain of the graphene film. The results demonstrate the capability to grow continuous nanometer-thin Mo₂C films at temperatures as low as 880 °C, without sacrificing the growth rate. Mo₂C films are proven to be efficient electrocatalysts for the HER. Moreover, we demonstrate the beneficial role of graphene overgrown on Mo₂C in reducing the HER overpotential values, which is attributed to more efficient charge transfer kinetics, compared to pure Mo₂C films.

Accelerated aging and degradation mechanism of LiFePO4/graphite batteries cycled at high discharge rates

The effects of discharge rates (0.5C, 1.0C, 2.0C, 3.0C, 4.0C and 5.0C) on the aging of LiFePO₄/graphite full cells are researched by disassembling the fresh and aged full cells. The capacity degradation mechanism is analyzed via electrochemical performance, surface morphologies and compositions, and the structure of the anode and cathode electrodes. The capacity fade is accelerated with increasing discharge rates. The irreversible loss of active lithium due to the generation of an SEI film is the primary aging factor for the full cells cycled at low discharge rates. However, when the discharge rate is greater than or equal to 4.0C, the performance degradation of the LiFePO₄ electrode is distinct due to structure decay, which is caused by quick and repeated intercalation of lithium ions and elevated temperature during discharging. In addition, the SEI film on the anode tends to be unstable after the rapid extraction of lithium ions at high discharge rates, and this enhances the loss of active lithium. Therefore, it is indicated that the degradation mechanism is changed for the full cells aged at 4.0C and 5.0C. Besides, the high discharge rate also increases the internal resistance of the full cell, which is detrimental to high rate discharge performance.

Effects of different discharge rates on the aging of LiFePO₄/graphite batteries are researched, and changes in degradation mechanism at high discharge rates are investigated.
