Nursing and midwife students' willingness to provide care to patients with HIV/AIDS--a comparative study in Finland, Estonia and Lithuania

Stigma and HIV Concealment Motivation among Gay Men Living with HIV in Finland

This study explored experiences of HIV stigma among gay men in Finland and the impact of these experiences on decision-making concerning HIV status disclosure. Seventeen gay men living with HIV in Finland participated in a qualitative interview study and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results focus on the following themes: (1) "Social support impedes social stigma;" (2) "Social support and the risk of HIV stigma," which describes how the pursuit of social support can expose some individuals to stigma; and (3) "HIV concealment motivation as a coping strategy," focusing on the motivation to conceal one's HIV status from others to avoid stigma. It is necessary to promote awareness and understanding of HIV in Finnish society, to challenge HIV stigma and, crucially, to facilitate access to social support among those diagnosed with HIV. This is likely to have favorable implications for both psychological and public health.

Health literacy for people living with HIV/Aids: an integrative review

Objective:

to analyze knowledge produced by research about health literacy for adult with HIV/Aids.

Method:

an integrative literature review, using six databases, was conducted between January and April of 2014. The descriptors aids and Health Literacy were used, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. A total of 130 articles were found and 14 were selected. Three categories were identified: educational technologies and health literacy for HIV/Aids; assessment of health literacy of patients with HIV/Aids; and health literacy and adherence to antiretroviral therapy.

Results:

analysis of health literacy, socioeconomic status and educational level of people living with HIV/ Aids was essential for implementation of educational strategies that increased adherence to health guidance.

Conclusion:

this study showed the importance of health literacy for working with people living with HIV/Aids, especially considering individuals who did not possess the minimum necessary for survival, which makes it relevant and encourages further research on the topic.

Pharmacy Student Attitudes and Willingness to Engage in Care with People Living with HIV/AIDS

Objective. To describe the extent to which pharmacy students hold negative attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and to determine whether background variables, student knowledge, and professional attitudes may affect willingness to care for PLWHA. Methods. An online survey tool was developed and administered to 150 pharmacy students in their third professional year. Descriptive and stepwise multivariate regressions were performed. Results. While descriptive results showed a majority of respondents had favorable professional attitudes towards caring for PLWHA, most pharmacy students expressed discomfort with specific attitudes about being in close physical contact and receiving selected services from PLWHA. Multivariate results revealed that: (1) being a minority predicted greater knowledge; (2) having received prior HIV instruction and greater HIV knowledge predicted more positive professional attitudes caring for PLWHA; (3) being more socially liberal, having more positive professional attitudes caring for PLWHA, and having greater empathy towards PLWHA predicted student willingness to provide services. Conclusion. Future educational interventions specifically targeted toward socially conservative whites may impact greater student willingness to care for PLWHA. Additional research should also explore the generalizability of the present findings and modeling to pharmacy students in other regions of the country.

Nursing Students' Willingness to Care for Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Patients in the Future

Recent studies in various countries have shown controversy regarding students' willingness to care for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients as well as factors associated with students' decisions about this issue. This survey, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, explored factors associated with Israeli nursing students' willingness to care for HIV-infected patients in the future. The results suggest that appropriate education and experience in caring for HIV-infected patients are critical for improving students' willingness to care for these patients.

Re-thinking HIV-Related Stigma in Health Care Settings: A Qualitative Study

People living with HIV (PLWH) continue to endure stigma and discrimination in the context of health care. This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study designed to (a) describe stigmatizing and discriminatory practices in health care settings, and (b) explore both symbolic and structural stigma from the perspectives of PLWH. For the purpose of this qualitative study, 21 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted in the province of Quebec, Canada. The data were analyzed following the principles of thematic analysis. During analysis, three themes were identified, and relations between these themes were delineated to reflect the experiences of participants. The findings suggest that HIV-related stigma in health care settings is episodic in nature. The findings also suggest that HIV-related stigma is experienced through interactions with health care providers (symbolic stigma) and, finally, that it is applied systematically to manage risk in the context of health care (structural stigma).

Turkish and American Undergraduate Students' Attitudes Toward HIV/AIDS Patients: A Comparative Study

BACKGROUND

Human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a complex healthcare problem. Research has demonstrated that negative attitudes affect healthcare provision.

AIMS

The purpose of this study was to compare nursing students' attitudes using the AIDS Attitude Scale (AAS).

SETTINGS

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in nursing schools in Istanbul, Turkey, and in Upstate New York (NY).

PARTICIPANTS

Baccalaureate nursing students (n = 613) from both countries completed the questionnaire.

METHODS

Demographic data, overall AAS attitudes, and attitudes within each subscale were compared. Analyses included frequency and percentages of the grouped variables, arithmetic means and standard deviations, t-test for independent samples, and multiple analysis of variance.

RESULTS

Upstate NY students' mean total AAS scores were significantly more positive toward HIV+ patients than Turkish students'. Scores for Professional Resistance and Emotions subscales were significantly more positive for the Upstate NY students, but Fear of Contagion was not. Upstate NY students had more negative attitudes in the contexts of job risk and eating in a restaurant where the chef has AIDS; more professional resistance to referring patients and training specialists for HIV/AIDS patients; and lower tender feelings for people with HIV/AIDS (p < .01 for each).

CONCLUSIONS

Improvement in students' attitudes is beneficial for promoting nonjudgmental, compassionate care for the HIV+ population.

Willingness to take care of HIV positive people: Responses from Russian nursing students

This article is a report of a study on Russian nursing students’ willingness to take care of people living with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA). HIV and AIDS are continuing to spread in Russia. Nursing students’ willingness to care for people living with HIV or AIDS is one aspect that should also be taken in consideration on this transmission situation. In total, 102 nursing students participated in the study (the response rate was 95.3%). The data were collected using the Nurse Willingness Questionnaire (NWQ) and analysed using SPSS version 15 for Windows. The study showed that nursing students’ willingness to care for PLWHA was low when asked with one general question but quite high when asked more specifically related to some nursing activities. Nursing students were more willing to perform clean nursing activities than activities with infectious risk. There is a great need for improving understanding of and proficiency in safety work with HIV-infected patients.
