Building community engagement: Incorporation of service learning in a nursing curriculum

From proposal to action: evaluating the results of a nursing student project to promote student-community engagement

BACKGROUND

A focus on community engagement is encouraged when educating nursing students on preventative care and advocacy. Students often struggle to connect theory to practice and benefit from real-world experiences.

AIM

This paper describes the effect of a student-led health project on student development.

METHODS

A descriptive, correlational design was used to explore end of semester feedback from undergraduate nursing students (N = 174) completing a semester long community project. Chi-square analyses and thematic coding were performed to determine measures of association and student perceptions.

RESULTS

Across 83 completed surveys (47.7%), self-efficacy was a key factor in project completion, development, bias awareness, and commitment to community.

CONCLUSIONS

Civic duty and professional responsibility are challenging concepts for students, thus, impacting transition to practice. Engagement in self-efficacious experiences is encouraged.

IMPACT STATEMENT

Community engagement influences undergraduate nursing students' development. Enhanced support of student self-efficacy may promote attainment of nursing values and improved care delivery.

The use of clinical practice to facilitate community engagement in the Faculty of Health Science

AIM

This article seeks to describe how clinical practice can be used to facilitate community engagement in the Faculty of Health Science.

DESIGN

The study followed a qualitative exploratory, descriptive and contextual design.

METHODS

The study was conducted in the Faculty of Health Science at a public university in Namibia, Southern Africa. A total of 19 academic staff were purposively selected to participate in the focus group interviews. Thereafter, Giorgi's method of phenomenological data analysis was used to analyse data. Lincoln and Guba's strategies were used to establish trustworthiness. The ethical considerations followed Dhai and McQuoid-Mason's four principles.

RESULTS

The three themes that emerged as findings were: facilitation of community engagement through home visits as part of clinical practice; facilitation of community engagement through clinical rural placements; and facilitation of community engagement through interprofessional education and practice.

CONCLUSIONS

It is concluded that health science students and academic staff should conduct home visits, students' placement should also include rural based facilities and allow inter-professional education and practice in clinical practice. However, there remains an overall need to explore for community engagement projects that may be conducted in rural settings. Additionally, a generic service-learning course for all undergraduate health science students may help facilitate community engagement through interprofessional education and practice.

Community engagement in the Faculty of Health Science: A concept analysis

Background

Community engagement has been given different interpretations by scholars and organisations; in addition, current scientific literature has not reached a consensus on how it is defined. This difference in conceptualisation may lead to confusion regarding the meaning. The researcher observed that academic staff from the Faculty of Health Science at an institution of higher education in Namibia are not certain of what counts as community engagement. This has led to some activities from the faculty being cancelled from the institutional review reports as they were not recognised as community engagement.

Aim

The aim of this article is to describe the concept analysis of community engagement.

Setting

the study took place at a faculty of health science at a university in Namibia.

Method

Concept analysis was done in accordance with the eight steps of the Walker and Avant model. A literature search was conducted to capture all potential definitions and uses of community engagement. A total of 225 definitions and uses of community engagement were recorded and used in the concept analysis. A list of definitions and uses of the concept of community engagement were documented with their citations, in a table with three columns. The first column (analysis) consisted of the identified definitions and uses of community engagement from the relevant literature. The second column (synthesis) consisted of reduced statements of the content presented in the first column. The third column (derivation) consisted of the final reduction into categories and connotations derived from the second column.

Findings

Three broad categories were revealed as findings: (1) the antecedents of community engagement, which included community challenges, health inequalities, societal needs and the need for a social responsive approach in education, research and services; (2) a three-phase process of community engagement; and (3) the outcomes of community engagement. A theoretical definition and a conceptual map for the concept of community engagement were drawn from the findings.

Recommendation

The results of the concept analysis of community engagement will be used to develop strategies for its facilitation in the Faculty of Health Science.

Community engaged service in pathophysiology and pharmacology

When community engaged service learning (CESL) is integrated as a component of nursing education, student learning outcomes are improved. Utilizing this pedagogical strategy in undergraduate pathophysiology and pharmacology courses comes with a unique set of challenges and barriers. However, integrating this high impact, evidence-informed approach offers an opportunity for students to advance knowledge of course concepts while meeting the needs of underserved community groups. Forty-two sophomore level nursing students enrolled in pathophysiology and pharmacology completed semester long projects in the community. Student reflective responses were collected, analyzed for content, and revealed themes of perceived community connection, empathy, and empowerment to become community engaged leaders.

Evaluation of Constructing Care Collaboration - nurturing empathy and peer-to-peer learning in medical students who participate in voluntary structured service learning programmes for migrant workers

BACKGROUND

Experiential learning through service provides opportunities to nurture and practice empathy. Of growing concern, studies showed significantly decreased empathy scores as students progress through medical school. Additionally, peer-to-peer learning provides an effective way for students to learn. Constructing Care Collaboration (CCC) is a student initiated, structured-service-learning-program that promotes the development of empathy and peer-to-peer teaching. CCC is conducted in cycles of 6 sessions. This is a mixed methods study that explores the effectiveness of CCC as a service learning platform in developing student participants' empathy, social and cultural competencies, communication skills and peer-to-peer teaching skills, ultimately aiming to promote a culture of serving the underprivileged.

METHODS

The study comprised of a self-administered quantitative questionnaire and qualitative interviews. Both evaluated if CCC participation developed volunteers' social-awareness, cultural competency, communication, confidence and motivation to teach their peers.

RESULTS

Quantitative data were collated from 38 completed student volunteers' questionnaires. Volunteers generally agreed CCC improved social-awareness and cultural competency. It increased confidence of participants in approaching migrant-workers, communicating with people from different social backgrounds, and promoted a culture of peer-to-peer teaching. Thematic analysis of 17 interviews was conducted. Themes identified include: increased empathy towards migrant-workers, improved communication skills, and identifying benefits and challenges in peer-to-peer teaching.

CONCLUSION

From the quantitative and qualitative information gathered, CCC has been shown to be effective in nurturing participants' self-reported empathy, cultural competence, communication skills and improved attitude towards peer-to-peer teaching. Given its effectiveness, CCC can be adopted as a model for structured service-learning.

Changing students' perceptions of the homeless: A community service learning experience

The homeless are an underserved, local vulnerable population that can benefit from a service learning clinical practicum experience for baccalaureate prepared nursing students. Negative attitudes and disrespect among healthcare workers has been identified by the homeless as a barrier to healthcare. A service learning experience with a vulnerable population has been shown to change nursing students' attitudes and beliefs. A large university in a southern city partnered with a community based organization that provided services to the homeless to educate senior nursing students in a service learning experience. The goal of this project was to examine attitudes and perceptions of nursing students toward the homeless population before and after participation in a service learning clinical practicum experience. This case study utilized a pre and post experience questionnaire to collect qualitative data for the purposes of the project. The findings revealed students demonstrated a decrease in fear, an increase in empathy, and a deeper understanding of the advocacy role of nurses for people experiencing homelessness. Nurse educators are challenged to engage students with vulnerable populations to change the attitudes and perceptions for improvement in the overall health of communities served worldwide. Partnerships and service learning experiences can benefit all.
