Tracking physical activity in baccalaureate nursing students in the United States prior to graduation: A longitudinal study

Physical Exercise Pattern for Undergraduate Students and Its Importance in the Quality of Life, Well-Being, and Future Patient Orientation

Background

This study evaluated physical activity (PA), physical exercise (PE), quality of life (QoL), PE barriers and benefits, contents learned about PA, and related factors of PE practice among undergraduate medical and nursing students.

Methods

This cross-sectional study conducted an online survey. We collected sociodemographic data and previous knowledge regarding PA/PE. We applied the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Well-being and Quality of Life Index (WHO-5), and scale of benefits and barriers for PE. We performed bivariate, univariate, and multivariate logistic regression analyses.

Results

Participants who exercised were identified as "active" and "very active" by the IPAQ, had better health self-perception, higher general total metabolic equivalent, and higher WHO-5 scores, perceived more PE benefits than barriers, and desired more information about PA/PE.

Conclusion

Undergraduate students should be encouraged to participate in PE. Adequate knowledge could be a resource they value and disseminate to their future patients.

The Associations of Body Mass Index, Body Image, Perceived Stress, and Mental Health among Female Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study in Taiwan

Maintaining a healthy caloric intake and expenditure balance is challenging. The preliminary study examined (a) the associations of Body Mass Index (BMI), body image, perceived stress, mental health, dietary habits, and exercise participation among 310 female college nursing students and (b) the differences in these factors among BMI subgroups. The cutoffs for underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity were <18.5 kg/m2, ≥18.5 but <23 kg/m2, ≥23 but <25 kg/m2, and ≥25 kg/m2, respectively. The survey used Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ). Because of a non-normal distribution, non-parametric statistics were used. The study found that BMI correlated with body image. The lower the BMI, the higher the satisfactory score the participants rated. BMI was irrelated to diet, exercise, stress, and mental health. The participants were unlikely to eat under stress and negative moods. The underweight group (17.1%) had the highest satisfactory score on their appearance evaluation. There was no difference between the overweight (14.2%) and obese (11.0%) groups. Meanwhile, the median of perceived stress was 18 and the prevalence of mental disturbance was 45.2% based on the CHQ. Underweight, overweight, obesity, high perceived stress, and poor mental health among nursing students warrant attention. Nurse educators should strengthen their coping strategies and provide support. A longitudinal study may consider incorporating coping strategies into the study design.

Association of physical activity self-worth perceptions and physical activity levels in female nursing students: cross-sectional study

The aim of the study was to evaluate the self-worth perceptions that can be effective on the physical activity levels of female nursing students. Cross-sectional study was carried out with 311 female nursing students. Data were collected using Personal Information Form, International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form and Women's Physical Activity Self-Worth Inventory. Physical activity levels were low in 28.3 percent of female students, moderate in 58.5 percent and high in 13.2 percent. Based on multinomial logistic regression analysis, Knowledge subscale score was 1.073 times higher in minimally active group and 1.104 times higher in very active group compared to the physically inactive one (p = .021 and p = .037, respectively). IPAQ-SF had weak positive correlations with the total score and Knowledge and Emotional subscale scores of WPASWI. The level of physical activity in female nursing students who will have an important place in encouraging the society about the physical activity in the future was inadequate. Interventions can be planned to provide nursing students with information and emotional support regarding the physical activity self-worth perceptions in order to increase their physical activity levels.

Systemic inflammation accelerates the adverse effects of air pollution on metabolic syndrome: Findings from the China health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS)

Long-term exposure to air pollution and systemic inflammation are associated with increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, their joint effects in Chinese middle-aged and older adults is unknown. In this cross-sectional study, 11,838 residents aged 45 years and older from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) Wave 3 in 2015 were included. MetS was diagnosed using the Joint Interim Societies' definition. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) was assessed to reflect systemic inflammation. Individual exposure to air pollutants (particulate matter with a diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM_2.5) or ≤ 10 μm (PM₁₀), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), ozone (O₃), and carbon monoxide (CO)) was evaluated using satellite-based spatiotemporal models according to participant residence at county-level. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were applied to examine the association between air pollution and MetS, and the modification effects of CRP between air pollution and MetS were estimated using interaction terms of CRP and air pollutants in the GLM models. The prevalence of MetS was 32.37%. The adjusted odd ratio (OR) of MetS was 1.192 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.116, 1.272), 1.177 (95% CI: 1.103, 1.255), 1.158 (95% CI: 1.072, 1.252), 1.303 (95% CI: 1.211,1.403), 1.107 (95% CI: 1.046, 1.171) and 1.156 (95% CI:1.083, 1.234), per inter-quartile range increase in PM_2.5 (24.04 μg/m³), PM₁₀ (39.00 μg/m³), SO₂ (19.05 μg/m³), NO₂ (11.28 μg/m³), O₃ (9.51 μg/m³) and CO (0.46 mg/m³), respectively. CRP was also associated with increased prevalence of MetS (OR = 1.049, 95% CI: 1.035, 1.064; per 1.90 mg/L increase in CRP). Interaction analysis suggested that high CRP levels enhanced the association between air pollution exposure and MetS. Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with increased prevalence of MetS, which might be enhanced by systemic inflammation. Given the rapidly aging society and heavy burden of MetS, measures should be taken to improve air quality and reduce systemic inflammation.

Physical Activity Habits of Latvian Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

It is important to integrate knowledge about the need for physical activities (PA) in the prevention and care of human health in nursing study programs so that nurses can promote PA among their patients. This study aims to evaluate the PA habits of Latvian nursing students. Participants were students of three universities in Latvia who were enrolled in a four-year bachelor study program, "Nursing", with a total of 341 after the data cleaning (population size n = 1554). The questionnaire contained questions about sociodemographic variables derived from the survey of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control of Latvia "Health Behaviour among Latvian Adult Population", habits of PA, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form. The data were collected between September and November 2021. Both descriptive and inferential statistics (difference between groups, correlation, and association tests) were calculated to analyse the data. Of the study population, 39% did not reach the minimum WHO-recommended PA. Increased PA level in the later study years is related to more frequent engagement in work and fewer table activities in the curriculum study process, but the higher intensity and total PA could be related to the specifics of nurse and nurse assistant work, which could be especially intense due to the overloaded health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Risk factors for coronary artery disease in nursing students

OBJECTIVES

to identify and discuss the main risk factors for coronary artery disease, observed in nursing students.

METHODS

an observational and cross-sectional study conducted with nursing students at a public college in Niterói, RJ. Data collection involved instruments validated for use in Brazil. PROCAM Quick Check score was used to estimate cardiovascular risk.

RESULTS

of the 110 students, 88 (80%) were female, with a mean age of 22.03±3.63 years. The most relevant cardiovascular risk factors were alcohol consumption 62 (56.4%), family history of coronary artery disease 35 (31.8%), poor eating habits (49.5%) and stress, whose domain "Professional training" received the highest mean, with 11.62 ± 3.42 points.

CONCLUSIONS

the most frequent risk factors in nursing students are stress, inadequate nutrition and risky consumption of alcoholic beverages. These present a low risk for coronary artery disease through PROCAM Quick Check score.
