'Sometimes your safety goes a bit by the wayside' … exploring occupational health and safety (OHS) with student nurses

A Qualitative Study on Voices of South African Learner Nurses on Occupational Health and Safety during Clinical Learning: Pre-COVID-19 Pandemic

The demanding and complex training of learner nurses in clinical practices requires various occupational health and safety measures to curb occupational health hazards among learner nurses. This paper aimed to explore learner nurses' experiences concerning occupational health and safety during clinical learning. A qualitative descriptive, contextual and exploratory design study was conducted. A total of 31 learner nurses were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and analysed using Tesch's open coding method. Two themes emerged from this study: "The experiences of learner nurses concerning their health and safety during clinical learning" and "The measures to be taken to promote occupational health and safety during clinical learning." Highlighting challenges and measures to mitigate occupational health hazards among learner nurses in the South African context, Limpopo province, would be beneficial. The findings can assist stakeholders in developing specific precautionary guidelines for learner nurses. Effective and innovative occupational health and safety training programmes for learner nurses can be developed despite constrained environmental resources.

Compliance with standard precautions and associated factors among undergraduate nursing students at governmental universities of Amhara region, Northwest Ethiopia

BACKGROUND

Standard precautions are minimum infection control practices used to prevent the transmission of diseases and applied to all patient care. Nursing students are at high risk of exposure to occupational biologic hazards because they are obligated to provide care to patients admitted with unknown infection statuses. Compliance with standard precautions is an effective and efficient means of infection prevention. However, their compliance with standard precautions among nursing students is not known in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess compliance with standard precautions and associated factors among undergraduate BSc nursing students at governmental universities located in the Amhara Region, northwest Ethiopia.

METHODS

An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate BSc nursing students at the governmental universities located in Amhara Region, northwest Ethiopia, from April 15 to May 15, 2021. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 423 samples. Descriptive statistics were presented in text, tables, and charts. Multicollinearity and model fitness were checked. All variables were entered into multivariable logistic regression and a P-value of < 0.05 was considered to identify statistically significant factors.

RESULT

Around 221 (53.4%) of the study participants were males. Good compliance of nursing students towards standard precautions was 56.3% (95% CI = 51.4-60.9), which is significantly associated with good knowledge (AOR = 2.52, 95% CI = 1.61-3.94), a perceived safe workplace climate (AOR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.24-3.71), and training or seminars related to standard precautions in the last six months (AOR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.01-2.29).

CONCLUSION

The overall compliance of nursing students with standard precautions was low, with nearly half of the nursing students failing to comply with standard precautions. The major factors associated with good compliance were good knowledge, a perceived safe workplace, and having seminars or training in the last six months. Training, enhancing knowledge, and creating a safe hospital environment are recommended to improve nursing students' compliance with standard precautions.

The Awareness and Empowerment Aspects of the Needlesticks and Other Sharps Injuries and Reporting in Nursing Education: A Cross-Sectional Survey

BACKGROUND

Occurrence and underreporting of needlesticks and other sharps injuries (NSIs) are still immediate concerns among nursing students. This study examined the relationship between occupational health and safety (OHS) awareness and empowerment levels of nursing students and the occurrence and reporting of NSIs.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted among purposively selected 840 students in a nursing school in 2018-2019. A self-report questionnaire was used to collect data about students' sociodemographic characteristics, OHS awareness and empowerment levels, and NSIs characteristics. After bivariate analyses, multivariate logistic regression was used.

RESULTS

The number of evaluated questionnaires was 469, for a response rate of 55.8%. Participants, 21.2% (n = 99), had suffered NSIs, and 47.8% had reported their injuries. The NSIs were statistically related to age, academic year, working night shift, OHS awareness level of students, and the number of clinical placements completed by students. The odds of experiencing NSIs was 2.3 (95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.0, 5.3]) times higher in male students, 4.3 (95% CI = [2.4, 7.4]) times higher in those beyond the second academic year, and 2.5 (95% CI = [1.4, 4.4]) times higher in those who had received OHS training for a shorter period than the average duration.

CONCLUSION/APPLICATION TO PRACTICE

The levels of awareness and empowerment were higher in students who received OHS and NSIs prevention training and those who received OHS training for the above-average duration. Increasing awareness and empowerment levels of nursing students through training can reduce the occurrence and the underreporting of NSIs.

Occupational health and safety incidents at a university school of nursing: A retrospective, descriptive appraisal

Nursing is recognised internationally as a high-risk occupation for graduates and students. Developing an understanding of incident data may facilitate prevention of future adverse events. A descriptive, retrospective review of occupational health and safety incidents reported by personnel at an Australian university school of nursing was conducted, spanning a period of eight-and-a-half years. Classification of incident reports was determined using the existing electronic system with manual categorisation of data not suited to electronic analysis, such as narrative descriptions. In total, 142 incidents were reported, of which 135 were included in this study. Students reported 98 incidents on placement and 10 on campus. Frequently reported student incidents involved sharps, fainting, manual handling activities and workplace violence. Fifteen reports were hazard notifications. Reviewing data gathered over a prolonged duration provided useful patterns of information. Gaps in data and reporting system constraints were identified. Dual reporting systems may be barriers to providing an all-inclusive overview. Improving data collection methods could include recording demographic information such as year level, drop-down menus for commonly reported incidents to facilitate recording, and consideration of how best to capture events that involve multiple personnel.
