Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effects of playing mother's recorded voice to preterm infants in the NICU on their mothers' mental health as measured by the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale -21 (DASS-21) questionnaire. DESIGN/METHODS This was a pilot single center prospective randomized controlled trial done at a level IV NICU. The trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04559620). Inclusion criteria were mothers of preterm infants with gestational ages between 26wks and 30 weeks. DASS-21 questionnaire was administered to all the enrolled mothers in the first week after birth followed by recording of their voice by the music therapists. In the interventional group, recorded maternal voice was played into the infant incubator between 15 and 21 days of life. A second DASS-21 was administered between 21 and 23 days of life. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to compare DASS-21 scores between the two groups and Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the pre- and post-intervention DASS-21 scores. RESULTS Forty eligible mothers were randomized: 20 to the intervention group and 20 to the control group. The baseline maternal and neonatal characteristics were similar between the two groups. There was no significant difference in the DASS-21 scores between the two groups at baseline or after the study intervention. There was no difference in the pre- and post-interventional DASS-21 scores or its individual components in the experimental group. There was a significant decrease in the total DASS-21 score and the anxiety component of DASS-21 between weeks 1 and 4 in the control group. CONCLUSION In this pilot randomized control study, recorded maternal voice played into preterm infant's incubator did not have any effect on maternal mental health as measured by the DASS-21 questionnaire. Data obtained in this pilot study are useful in future RCTs (Randomized Controlled Trial) to address this important issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Very and extremely preterm infants (VEPIs) experience sensory deprivation in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). While various sensory-supported interventions might improve immediate physiological response, their impact on long-term development remains unclear. Additionally, these interventions may pose challenges in the NICU environment due to complex treatments and monitoring requirements. AIMS This review aimed to understand the current evidence on sensory-supported interventions in the NICU, identify the components of these interventions and determine their effects on the VEPIs. STUDY DESIGN A systematic search across nine electronic databases (PubMed, EBSCO, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, Cochrane trial, IEEE Xplore DL and ACM DL) was conducted in December 2020 and updated in September 2022. The search gathers information on sensory-supported interventions for VEPIs in the NICU. RESULTS The search yielded 23 systematic reviews and 22 interventional studies, categorized into auditory (19), tactile/kinesthetic (5), positional/movement support (7), visual (1) and multisensory (13) interventions. While unimodal and multimodal interventions showed short-term benefits, their long-term effects on VEPIs are indeterminate. Translating these findings into clinical practice remains a challenge due to identified gaps. CONCLUSION Our reviews indicate that sensory-supported interventions have a transient impact, with intervention studies reporting positive effects. Future research should develop and test comprehensive, continuous multisensory interventions tailored for the early NICU stage. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Multimodal sensory interventions show promise for VEPIs, but long-term effects need further study. Standardizing protocols for NICU integration and parental involvement is crucial. Ongoing research and collaboration are essential for optimizing interventions and personalized care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The parents' presence and involvement in neonatal care is a promising approach to improve preterm infants' neurodevelopmental outcomes. We examined whether exposure to the parents' speech is associated with the preterm infant's social-cognitive development. METHODS The study included infants born before 32 gestational weeks in two neonatal units. Each infant's language environment was assessed from 16-hour recordings using Language Environment Analysis (LENA®). Parental presence was assessed with Closeness Diary for 14 days during the hospital stay. Attention to faces and non-face patterns was measured at the corrected age of seven months using an eye-tracking disengagement test. RESULTS A total of 63 preterm infants were included. Infants were less likely to disengage their attention from faces (M = 0.55, SD = 0.26) than non-face patterns (M = 0.24, SD = 0.22), p < 0.001, d = 0.84. Exposure to the parents' speech during the neonatal period was positively correlated with the preference for faces over non-face patterns (rs = 0.34, p = 0.009) and with the preference for parents over unfamiliar faces (rs = 0.28, p = 0.034). CONCLUSION The exposure to the parents' speech during neonatal hospital care is a potential early marker for later social development in preterm infants. IMPACT The exposure to the parents' speech during neonatal intensive care is a potential early marker for optimal social-cognitive development in preterm infants. This is the first study to show an association between parental vocal contact during neonatal intensive care and early social development (i.e., face preference), measured at seven months of corrected age. Our findings suggest that we should pay attention to the parents' vocal contact with their child in the neonatal intensive care unit and identify need for tailored support for face-to-face and vocal contact.

Abstract
Objectives To date, the majority of research on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) in the developing brain has primarily centered on adolescents and adults, leaving a gap in understanding variations in spontaneous brain activity at rest in preterm infants. This study aimed to uncover and comprehend the distinctions in spontaneous brain activity between preterm and term infants, with the goal of establishing a foundation for assessing the condition of preterm infants. Methods In this study, 14 term infants and 15 preterm infants with equivalent gestational age were carefully chosen from the neonatal unit of Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) intensity was assessed using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to examine brain activity in both groups. Subsequently, the differences between the term and preterm infants were statistically analyzed using a two-sample t-test. A p-value of <0.05, corrected for the REST Gaussian Random Fields, was deemed to be statistically significant. Results In comparison to the term infant group, the preterm infant group exhibited a significant increase in the ALFF value in the left precuneus, left frontal superior orbital gyrus, and left calcarine cortex. Conclusion Significant variances in spontaneous brain activity have been observed in various regions between term infants and preterm infants of equivalent gestational age. These variations could potentially impact the emotional and cognitive development of preterm infants in the long term.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Moderate preterm infants, born between 320/7 and 336/7 weeks, represent a significant number of preterm-born infants; however, they remain a poorly studied group despite their vulnerability. The objective of this correlational study is to describe the impact of having a moderate preterm infant hospitalised in the NICU on the mothers' mental health and how this relates to the interaction between the dyad. METHOD During the hospitalisation period, 85 moderate preterm mother-infant dyads participated in this study. The participants provided self-reports of depression, parental stress, and skin to skin and breastfeeding practices. Also, mother-infant interaction was assessed in the NICU with an observational scale. RESULTS Mothers evidenced high levels of stress and depressive symptoms during the hospitalization. The stress experienced by these women was significant, although weakly, associated with the interaction with their babies; and mothers of small for gestational age babies showed difficulties in this area. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study could represent a contribution to a better understanding of the relation between the characteristics of moderate preterm babies, maternal emotional wellbeing, and the quality of mother-infant interactions in NICU settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premature birth is known to affect the newborn's autonomic nervous system (ANS) maturation, with potential short and long-term impact on their neurobehavioral development. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of maternal directed singing and speaking on the preterm infants' autonomic nervous system (ANS) maturation as measured by the heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. METHODS In this multi-center randomized clinical trial, 30 stable preterm infants (m = 29,6 weeks of gestational age), without any abnormalities were randomized into an intervention (16) or a control group (14). HRV was measured weekly, for a total of 80 recordings during hospitalization, as well as before and after each session of singing or speaking. RESULTS The intervention group showed a significant increase of the percentage value of HRV power in the high frequency range when compared to the control group (p = 0.044). More specifically, the maternal singing significantly increased the high frequency power and decreased the low/high frequency power ratio (p = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS The preterm infant's vagal activity significantly increased in the intervention group, potentially enhancing their ANS maturation. The effect is specifically evidenced in the singing condition. IMPACT Maternal singing affects the autonomic nervous system maturation of preterm hospitalized newborns in the NICU. No previous studies investigated how early vocal parental intervention can affect preterm infants developement, throught their autonomic nervous system maturation. Early Vocal Contact as an early intervention involving parents has a positive impact on preterm infant's development and it can be easily implemented in the care of preterm infants. Abstract
Introduction This article presents the findings of an experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of coercive and assertive communication on children's emotional responses and behavioral tendencies within parent-child interactions. Methods The study tested four hypotheses related to children's feelings, personalization bias, the need to express their point of view, and the desire to retreat to their room alone. Short audio stimuli recorded by a female assistant, representing a mother addressing her child, were utilized to create five different communication situations. The experimental procedure involved participants listening to the audio stimuli and answering related questions. The study included 123 participants between the ages of 9 and 13, with an equal gender distribution. Results The results of One-Way ANOVA tests indicated significant differences among the four types of communication in terms of unpleasant feelings, personalization bias, listening to a personal point of view, and retreating into a personal room. The findings suggest that coercive communication elicited more negative emotional responses and stronger tendencies toward personalization bias, expressing personal opinions, and seeking solitude compared to assertive communication. Discussion The implications of these findings highlight the importance of promoting positive and respectful communication strategies in parent-child relationships to foster children's emotional well-being and healthy behavioral development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disrupted sleep is believed to contribute to short- and long-term neurodevelopmental problems in very preterm infants (VPIs). This study presents a protocol for an evaluator-blinded, randomized crossover trial. It aims to assess the sleep efficiency of hospitalized VPIs by providing multisensory stimulation bundles. Furthermore, it aims to observe the intervention impacts on sleep during hospitalization of the VPIs and their sleep and neurodevelopmental outcomes during the first year of post-discharge follow-up. METHODS The study will be conducted in the neonatology department of a tertiary pediatric teaching hospital. All the eligible VPIs will undergo two types of care in random order: "standard care" (2 weeks) and "standard care plus multisensory stimulation bundles," each lasting 2 weeks. A generated list of random numbers will be used for case sequence allocation. Sleep outcomes will be evaluated using the Actiwatch-2 Actigraph. Moreover, the amplitude-integrated electroencephalography and the Griffiths Mental Development Scales will be used to measure the neurodevelopmental outcomes during hospitalization and in the first year of follow-up of the VPIs. DISCUSSION The intervention protocol of this study differs from that of other traditional interventions by producing precise and consistent supportive stimulations, similar to maternal tactile, auditory, posture, and visual effects for hospitalized VPIs. This protocol could be an effective measure to facilitate sleep and early neurodevelopment of VPIs. The expected outcomes will help confirm the implementation and generalization of the multisensory stimulation bundles' care protocol in neonatology departments. We expect that the study will positively impact hospitalized VPIs, especially in their sleep and early neurodevelopmental outcomes. It will also provide a new perspective regarding parent and infant interaction strategies, particularly for newborn intensive care units that limit visits because of the global spread of COVID-19. Abstract
Singing to infants is widely accepted as an enjoyable, positive, and beneficial interaction between the parent and infant across cultures. Whilst the literature suggests that live infant-directed singing impacts the infant, the parent doing the singing and the dyad in powerful ways, no systematic review of the evidence has yet been conducted. To this end, this systematic review identified 21 studies that investigated the effect of live parental infant-directed singing. These impacts were categorized as either being directly related to the infant, the parent, or the parent-infant dyad. Three main themes - one for each of the impact categories considered - were identified using thematic analysis techniques; infant-directed singing impacts on: infants' emotional regulation, provides validation of the parent's role, and promotes affect attunement within the dyad. The findings reinforce the benefits of live parental infant-directed singing for all parties involved, particularly when parents sing to typically developing infants born at full term. In contrast, the findings were inconsistent for pre-term infants. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION During the COVID-19 pandemic, children with neurodevelopmental disabilities could not attend their usual rehabilitation therapies, with a consequent reduced support of developmental process and risk of worsening of their clinical conditions. METHODS We prospectively enrolled 14 children with developmental delay, who had already tried a personalised music therapy (Euterpe method). We included them in a 12-day programme of home-based music therapy. The children and their parents were investigated using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and the Parent Stress Index-Short Form. RESULTS Fourteen children started the intervention, while only 12 children completed all the planned home sessions and assessments. We observed a significant improvement in children's sleep quality and a reduction of parental distress. DISCUSSION The significant improvements in parental distress and sleep quality must be considered important achievements for the quality of life of a child and their family. Home-based music therapy can provide a feasible approach to improving sleep and parent's stress for children with developmental disorders.

Abstract
Prosody is the fundamental organizing principle of spoken language, carrying lexical, morphosyntactic, and pragmatic information. It, therefore, provides highly relevant input for language development. Are infants sensitive to this important aspect of spoken language early on? In this study, we asked whether infants are able to discriminate well-formed utterance-level prosodic contours from ill-formed, backward prosodic contours at birth. This deviant prosodic contour was obtained by time-reversing the original one, and super-imposing it on the otherwise intact segmental information. The resulting backward prosodic contour was thus unfamiliar to the infants and ill-formed in French. We used near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in 1-3-day-old French newborns (n = 25) to measure their brain responses to well-formed contours as standards and their backward prosody counterparts as deviants in the frontal, temporal, and parietal areas bilaterally. A cluster-based permutation test revealed greater responses to the Deviant than to the Standard condition in right temporal areas. These results suggest that newborns are already capable of detecting utterance-level prosodic violations at birth, a key ability for breaking into the native language, and that this ability is supported by brain areas similar to those in adults. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: At birth, infants have sophisticated speech perception abilities. Prosody may be particularly important for early language development. We show that newborns are already capable of discriminating utterance-level prosodic contours. This discrimination can be localized to the right hemisphere of the neonate brain.

Abstract
Background Registered nurses in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are working under stressful environment caused by the need and commitment to provide care for the critically ill neonates. Therefore, there is an imperative need to know and understand the work-related support strategies that can be adapted for registered nurses working in a NICU in the Tshwane District to enable them to provide quality care for the admitted neonates. Aim To explore and describe the work-related support needs of registered nurses working in a specific NICU situated in the Tshwane District. Setting The study was conducted in a selected NICU in Tshwane District. Method A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual design was used in this study. In-depth unstructured individual face-to-face interviews were conducted with nine registered nurses working at the selected NICU of an academic hospital. Thematic data analysis was conducted. Results Three themes, namely teamwork between registered nurses and doctors, staff development in the form of peer seminars, workshops and in-service training, and availability of adequate resources within the workplace arose. Conclusion This study revealed that the registered nurses working in the NICU in the Tshwane District are in need of work-related support, as it will improve their well-being. Contribution The contribution of this study will be used by the hospital management to plan strategies that can be adapted for the betterment of the work environment for registered nurses in the NICU and the hospital in general.

Abstract
Premature infants are at risk of developing serious complications after birth. Communicative interventions performed in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), such as music therapy interventions, can reduce the stress experienced by these infants and promote the development of their autonomic nervous system. In this study we investigated the effects of music therapy interventions, consisting of singing, humming, talking or rhythmic reading, on premature infants by investigating the effects on their heart rate variability (HRV). A total of 27 communicative intervention from 18 patients were included in this study. The NN-intervals were extracted from the ECG and the mean ± SEM values for the 6 different features (HR, SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, pDec and SDDec) was investigated. Median feature values for the pre- and communicative intervention were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. An increase in values for the SDNN, RMSSD and pNN50 was found in the 20 minutes preceding the communicative intervention, when caregiving activities were performed, and was followed by an immediate decrease at the start of the intervention. Features' variability during the intervention appeared to be smaller than in the pre-communicative intervention, indicating improved autonomic regulation. This difference was, however, not statistically significant possibly due to different types of activities applied during the communicative intervention per patient.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the effects of maternal sound stimulation on preterm infants. BACKGROUND With an increased focus of studies on maternal sound stimulation for preterm infants, there is a need for an up-to-date systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to measure the effects of maternal sound stimulation on preterm infants. DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL Complete, VIP Journal Integration Platform, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data and China Biology Medicine disc from database establishment to 28 April 2021. REVIEW METHODS We conducted the meta-analysis using Review Manager 5.3. Integrative description was used for data that were not suitable for meta-analysis. RESULTS A total of 380 studies between 1979 and 2021 were retrieved and 26 were included in this systematic review. Maternal sound stimulation could significantly reduce the pain level and increase the comfort level of preterm infants during a painful procedure. Compared with routine care, maternal sound stimulation could help preterm infants achieve better physiological stability by reducing their heart rate and increasing their oxygen saturation. CONCLUSION Maternal sound stimulation is a feasible and effective intervention for preterm infants, which is highly recommended in the clinical setting.

Abstract
Background: Early parental interventions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) have beneficial effects on preterm infants’ short and long-term outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Early Vocal Contact (EVC)—singing and speaking—on preterm infants’ vagal activity and autonomic nervous system (ANS) maturation. Methods: In this multi-center randomized clinical trial, twenty-four stable preterm infants, born at 25–32 weeks gestational age, were randomized to either the EVC group or control group, where mothers did not interact with the babies but observed their behavior. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) was acquired before intervention (pre-condition), during vocal contact, and after it (post condition). Results: No significant effect of the vocal contact, singing and speaking, was found in HRV when the intervention group was compared to the control group. However, a significant difference between the singing and the pre and post conditions, respectively, preceding and following the singing intervention, was found in the Low and High Frequency power nu, and in the low/high frequency features (p = 0.037). By contrast, no significant effect of the speaking was found. Conclusions: Maternal singing, but not speaking, enhances preterm infants’ vagal activity in the short-term, thus improving the ANS stability. Future analyses will investigate the effect of enhanced vagal activity on short and long-term developmental outcomes of preterm infants in the NICU.

Abstract
Background: After preterm birth, infants are at high risk for delays in language development. A promising intervention to reduce this risk is represented by the exposure to parental voices through book-reading in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). This study investigated the possible advantages of book-reading to preterm neonates during their NICU stay on their subsequent language development. Methods: 100 families of preterm infants were recruited. The parents of 55 preterm infants (Reading Group) received a colored picture-book on NICU admission and were supported to read to their neonate as often as possible and to continue after hospital discharge. Forty-five infants (Control Group) were recruited before the beginning of the intervention. Infant language development was assessed with the Hearing and Language quotients of the Griffith Mental Development Scale at the corrected ages of 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months. Results: Regardless of group membership, Hearing and Language mean quotients decreased between 9 and 18 months; nevertheless, this decrease was considerably reduced in the Reading group, compared to the Control Group. Conclusions: Reading in NICUs represents a suitable intervention that could positively influence language development and parent-infant relationships in preterm children. The study findings support its implementation as a preventive measure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to the voice and language during the critical period of auditory development associated with the third trimester is thought to be an essential building block for language. Differences in the auditory experience associated with early life in the NICU may increase the risk of language delays for premature infants. NICU nurses are fundamental in the care of premature infants; how they use their voices may be important in understanding auditory experiences in the NICU. This study examined voice use behaviors of NICU nurses in the United States and their current knowledge of early auditory development. METHOD An opt-in, online questionnaire. RESULTS Nurses reported using their voice more as the age of infants approached term gestation and speaking to infants was the most common type of voice use. Both infant and nurse factors influenced reported voice use decisions in the NICU. Nurses did not believe the NICU auditory environment to be sufficient to meet early auditory needs of premature infants but did believe that premature infants are exposed to adequate voice sounds. CONCLUSIONS A gap in knowledge regarding the importance of early exposure to voice sounds may be a barrier to nurses using their voices to support early auditory development.

OBJECTIVES Environmental stimuli in neonatal intensive care units can disrupt the physiological stability and sleep of infants. It is essential to perform nursing interventions to reduce the adverse effects of such stimuli. This study aimed to compare the effect of recorded lullabies and mothers' live lullabies on physiological responses and sleep duration of preterm infants. METHODS This study was a randomized clinical trial. The participants were 90 preterm infants selected using convenience sampling. In the intervention groups, music (recorded lullabies and mother's live lullabies) was played for 14 days, 20 min a day, while the control group did not receive any intervention. The data were collected using physiological criteria and infant sleep checklists before, during, and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (Version 21.0). RESULTS The mean scores of physiological parameters (O2 saturation and heart rate) were not significantly different in the three groups before, during, and after the intervention (p>0.05). However, there was an improvement in O2-saturation and a decrease in the heart rate in two intervention groups. The mean duration of the infants' overnight sleep was not statistically significant between the groups before the intervention (p>0.05). However, there was a statistically significant difference in the intervention groups after the intervention, (p<0.05), and the infants' overnight sleep was longer in the recorded-lullaby group than the other two groups. CONCLUSIONS Although performing interventions, including recorded lullaby and mother's live lullaby did not differ significantly with that of the control group in physiological criteria, it can be clinically important. In addition, recorded-lullaby increased the infants' overnight sleeping. Thus, it is suggested that further studies be conducted to confirm the effect of recorded lullaby and mother's live lullaby interventions on physiological parameters and sleep duration of hospitalized infants.

Abstract
Prematurity deprives infants of the prenatal sensory stimulation essential to their correct development; in addition, the stressful environment of the NICU impacts negatively on their growth. The purpose of this review was to investigate the effects of NICU noise pollution on preterm infants and parents. We focused on the systems and projects used to control and modulate sounds, as well as on those special devices and innovative systems used to deliver maternal sounds and vibrations to this population. The results showed beneficial effects on the preterm infants in different areas such as physiological, autonomic, and neurobehavioral development. Although most of these studies highlight positive reactions, there is also a general acknowledgement of the current limits: small and heterogeneous groups, lack of structured variable measurements, systematic control groups, longitudinal studies, and normative values. The mother's presence is always preferred, but the use of music therapy and the devices analyzed, although not able to replace her presence, aim to soften her absence through familiar and protective stimuli, which is a very powerful aid during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A few positive effects of mothers' voice on physiological outcomes have been studied and limited studies have focused on the level of cortisol. In addition, white noise has recently been found to be beneficial for human sleep, but studies in premature infants were limited and no study has compared the effects of mothers' voice and white noise on premature infants. OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of mothers' voice and white noise on sleep-wake patterns, salivary cortisol levels, weight gain, heart rate, and oxygen saturation of premature infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS This was a three-group randomized controlled trial. A total of 103 medically stable premature infants in incubators were recruited from the NICU of a women's and children's hospital in China between March and December 2017 and were randomized into three groups: the mothers' voice group (n = 34), the white noise group (n = 34), and the routine care group (n = 35). Mothers' voice, white noise, and no voice were provided to the three groups for 20 min at a time, three times a day for four consecutive days. The sound levels of the mothers' voice and white noise were controlled between 50 and 55 dB. Sleep-wake patterns, salivary cortisol level, and weight were measured at pre-test and post-test whereas heart rate and oxygen saturation were measured every five-minute at 11am, 2pm, 5pm for four-consecutive days. RESULTS A group difference was found only in weight gain (p = 0.003), with weight gain in the white noise group being significantly higher than the mothers' voice group (Z=-3.447, p = 0.001). Significant declines in total sleep time and sleep efficiency and increases in wake time after sleep onset and average awakening time were only found in the routine-care group between the pre-test and post-test (p<0.05). No significant differences were found in the salivary cortisol levels, heart rates, and oxygen saturation levels among the three groups (p>0.05). A significant increase in oxygen saturation during the 20-min intervention was found in white noise group. Non-significant decreases in the heart rate during the 20-min intervention and salivary cortisol levels at post test were noted in all the three groups. CONCLUSION White noise is more useful for encouraging weight gain in preterm infants compared with mothers' voices. White noise might be introduced for use in the care of premature infants in NICUs, and more high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these findings. Abstract
BACKGROUND Venipuncture is a common procedure in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and causes significant pain for neonates. AIM To evaluate the effect of maternal voice on pain caused by venipuncture (including peripheral venipuncture and femoral venipuncture) in neonates hospitalized in the NICU. DESIGN Experimental, randomized controlled study. SETTING The study was conducted in the NICU of two hospitals in China from November 2017 to January 2019. METHODS One hundred and sixteen neonates were randomly assigned to the maternal voice or routine care groups. The maternal voice group received recorded maternal voice intervention before, during, and after venipuncture. Three phases of procedures were videotaped. Neonatal Infant Acute Pain Assessment Scale (NIAPAS) was assessed by the same evaluator at different phases. RESULTS The study showed that NIAPAS scores, behavioral indicator scores, and physiological indicator scores in the maternal voice group were significantly lower compared with those in the routine care group. CONCLUSION Recorded maternal voice can improve pain caused by venipuncture in neonates. These are simple, rapid, and cost-effective methods that nurses can implement during venipuncture in neonates.

Abstract
Many infants in the NICU experience difficulties with oral feeding, which contribute to prolonged length of stay. Oral feeding is a complex task involving sensorimotor functioning of the face, mouth, and larynx, as well as coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing. The care provided in the NICU starting at birth sets the stage for future oral feeding. The purpose of this article is to describe strategies that will establish a positive foundation to support optimal oral feeding. Nurses can use these strategies to protect newborns from noxious stimuli and promote positive auditory, tactile, gustatory, and olfactory experiences to optimize neurodevelopment for the complex task of feeding.

Abstract
Background Studies of parents’ psychological well-being in single-family rooms in neonatal intensive care units have shown conflicting results. Aims To compare emotional distress in the form of depression, anxiety, stress and attachment scores among parents of very preterm infants cared for in a single-family rooms unit vs an open bay unit. Study design Prospective survey design. Subject Parents (132) of 77 infants born at 28 0/7–32 0/7 weeks of gestation in the two units. Outcome measures Duration of parental presence was recorded. Scores for depression (The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), anxiety (The State–Trait–Anxiety Inventory, Short Form Y), stress (The Parent Stressor Scale: neonatal intensive care unit questionnaire and The Parenting Stress Index—short form) and attachment (Maternal Postnatal Attachment Scale) measured 14 days after delivery, at discharge, expected term date and four months post-term. Results Parents were present 21 hours/day in the single-family room unit vs 7 hours/day in the Open bay unit. Ninety-three percent of the fathers in the single-family rooms unit were present more than 12 hours per day during the first week. Mothers in the single-family rooms had a significantly lower depression score -1.9 (95% CI: -3.6, -0.1) points from birth to four months corrected age compared to mothers in the Open bay unit, and 14% vs 52% scored above a cut-off point considered being at high risk for depression (p<0.005). Both mothers and fathers in the single-family rooms reported significantly lower stress levels during hospitalization. There were no differences between the groups for anxiety, stress or attachment scores after discharge. Conclusion The lower depression scores by the mothers and lower parental stress scores during hospitalization for both parents supports that single-family rooms care contribute to parents’ psychological wellbeing.

Abstract
AIMS The first purpose of the study was to examine fathers' spontaneous communicative behavior with their preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit, and how father's and infant's behaviors affected each other. The second purpose was to examine any possible association between the fathers' and/or infants' characteristics and the quality of fathers' behaviors with their infants. STUDY DESIGN/SUBJECTS/OUTCOME MEASURES Father-preterm infant dyads (n=20) were assessed at 34-36 weeks postmenstrual age, during a spontaneous face-to-face communication with the infant placed in a heated cot in the NICU, and coded according to the Parent-Preterm Infant Coding System. RESULTS The presence of the father's Affiliative Behavior increased the occurrences of infant Gazing at the parent's face. In turn, infant gazing increased the occurrence of paternal Affiliative Behavior. The likelihood of infant's Gazing at the father's face was also significantly elicited by infrequent occurrences of paternal Affectionate Talk, co-occurring with Gazing at infant with Positive Facial Affect (but no Touch). With regard to the predictors of quality in father-infant interactions, we found a significant positive correlation between fathers' level of depressive symptomatology and fathers' Affiliative Behavior. CONCLUSION Our results show the of bidirectional sequential patterns of communication between fathers and preterm infants at 35 weeks postmenstrual age, and provide important information about the quality and modalities of paternal communication and their influence on infant behavioral states. From a clinical perspective, these results suggest that father-specific interventions designed to improve and sustain fathers' positive engagement with infants in the NICU should be pursued.

Abstract
Replicable research and open science are of value to our field and to society at large, but most universities provide no incentives to adopt these practices. Instead, current incentive structures favor novel research, which has led to a situation in which few researchers take the time to do replications, share protocols, or share data. Obviously, several approaches to remedy this situation are possible. However, little progress can be made if becoming involved in such activities reduces a researcher's chances of rank and status advancement and other rewards. I describe in this article the way my department has modified our incentive structure to tackle this problem, including how the changes influence my research as a developmental psychologist. Finally, I offer suggestions for faculty who wish to initiate similar changes in their institutions.

Abstract
Preterm birth is associated with a higher prevalence of neurodevelopmental deficits. Indeed, preterm children are at increased risk for cognitive, behavioral, and socio-emotional difficulties. There is currently an increasing interest in introducing music intervention in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) care. Several studies have shown short-term beneficial effects. A recent study has shown that listening to a familiar music (heard daily during the NICU stay) enhanced preterm infants’ functional connectivity between auditory cortices and subcortical brain regions at term-equivalent age. However, the long-term effects of music listening in the NICUs have never been explored. The aim of this study was to evaluate at 12 and 24 months the effects of music listening in the NICU on cognitive and emotional development in preterm children by comparing them to a preterm control group with no previous music exposure and to a full-term group. Participants were 44 children (17 full-term and 27 preterm). Preterm children were randomized to either music intervention or control condition (without music). The preterm-music group regularly listened to music from 33 weeks postconceptional age until hospital discharge or term-equivalent age. At 12 months, children were evaluated on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition, then with 4 episodes of the Laboratory Temperament Assessment Battery (assessing expressions of joy, anger, and fear, and sustained attention). At 24 months, the children were evaluated with the same tests, and with 3 additional episodes of the Effortful Control Battery (assessing inhibition). Results showed that the scores of preterm children, music and control, differed from those of full-term children for fear reactivity at 12 months of age and for anger reactivity at 24 months of age. Interestingly, these significant differences were less important between the preterm-music and the full-term groups than between the preterm-control and the full-term groups. The present study provides preliminary, but promising, scientific findings on the beneficial long-term effects of music listening in the NICU on neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm children, and more specifically on emotion mechanisms at 12 and 24 months of age. Our findings bring new insights for supporting early music intervention in the NICU.

Abstract
During the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stay, very preterm (VPT) infants are exposed to life-saving yet pain-inducing skin-breaking procedures (i.e., NICU pain-related stress) which contribute to the programming of hypo-responsive HPA axis development during the first months of life. Unfortunately, to date the mechanisms linking NICU pain-related stress and altered HPA axis regulation are only limitedly known. Telomere length (TL) regulation is an epigenetic mechanism previously shown to be affected by early stress exposures and capable of associating with HPA axis reactivity in children. In VPT infants, NICU pain-related stress was found to associate with decreased TL from birth to discharge, but there is no evidence for the association between TL and HPA axis in these infants. In this study, we prospectively examined the relationship between NICU pain-related stress and HPA axis reactivity to an age-appropriate socio-emotional condition (i.e., the Still-Face Procedure, SFP) in healthy VPT infants at 3-month corrected age. NICU pain-related stress was computed as the ratio between the number of skin-breaking procedures and length of NICU stay. A differential score (i.e., ∆TL) was obtained subtracting TL at birth from TL at discharge. A normalized (log10) cortisol reactivity index (CRI) was obtained by averaging post-stress (20 min after SFP) salivary cortisol sample on baseline value. A regression model controlling for neonatal and socio-demographic confounders showed that ∆TL was the only significant predictor of CRI. Although preliminary, these findings contribute to our knowledge of the mechanisms linking early exposures to adversity and later in life regulation of the HPA axis in VPT infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the clinical effect of maternal voice stimulation in alleviating procedural pain in neonates during heel blood collection. METHODS A total of 72 neonates who were admitted to the neonate intensive care unit were randomly divided into an intervention group (n=35) and a control group (n=37). Heel blood collection was performed by the routine method in the control group. The intervention group listened to their mothers' voice from 1 minute before heel blood collection to the end of the procedure. Pain score, incidence of crying, and vital signs were recorded before and after heel blood collection. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the heart rate was significantly reduced, the blood oxygen saturation significantly increased, the incidence of crying and the pain score were significantly reduced in the intervention group during the procedure of heel blood collection (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Maternal voice stimulation helps to reduce procedural pain and maintain stable vital signs in neonates.
