Abstract
Spinal cord tumors are uncommon, and its multiple representatives not always have pathognomonic characteristics, which poses a challenge for both patients and caring physicians. The radiologist performs an important role in recognizing these tumors, as well as in differentiating between neoplastic and non-neoplastic processes, supporting clinical and surgical decision-making in patients with spinal cord injury. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) assessment, paired with a deep understanding of the various patterns of cord involvement allied to detailed clinical data can provide a diagnosis or significantly limit the differential diagnosis in most cases. In this article, we aim to review the most common and noteworthy intramedullary and extramedullary spinal tumors, as well as some other tumoral mimics, with an emphasis on their MRI morphologic characteristics.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare fibroblastic mesenchymal tumors that are usually benign with variable malignant potential. They can develop in any organ due to their spindle cell origin. The exact etiology of solitary fibrous tumors is unknown. The majority of SFTs are benign with 10-30% of them exhibiting aggressive and malignant features. The aggressiveness of this type of tumor is not associated with its histological features, which makes surgical resection the treatment of choice. We will review the clinical and radiological features and possible differential diagnoses of SFTs according to their anatomical sites following the World Health Organization 2020 classification.

Abstract
While intradural extramedullary spinal disease varies widely, identification of tumors in this location and their radiologic manifestations greatly facilitates narrowing of the diagnostic considerations. Meningioma and schwannoma are the two most common intradural extramedullary tumors, and both are associated with neurofibromatosis. Meningiomas are most common in the thoracic spine and show a strong female predilection and a clinical manifestation related to compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots. Schwannomas typically are associated with radicular pain and other sensory symptoms. Melanotic schwannoma frequently shows T1 hyperintensity at MRI related to the presence of paramagnetic free radicals in melanin. Neurofibroma, known for its T2 hyperintensity, frequently involves the cervical spine, where it may make surgical resection challenging. Less commonly, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor commonly mimics the imaging appearance of a schwannoma but has decidedly more aggressive biologic behavior. In the cauda equina, myxopapillary ependymoma and paraganglioma are believed to arise from the filum terminale and have characteristic imaging manifestations based on their underlying pathologic features. Recent identification of a common genetic marker has led to reclassification of what had previously been regarded as separate tumors and are now known as solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma. In the proper clinical setting, the presence of nodular intradural enhancement strongly suggests the presence of leptomeningeal metastatic disease, even when results of cerebrospinal fluid analysis are negative. Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare, spindle cell neoplasms of the mesenchymal origin. Lesions localized to the spine are exceptionally uncommon, only described in the literature in case reports and small case series. While these lesions are typically benign, there are a few reports in which they recur or present as malignancies. The patient presented in the case herein was a 72-year-old male, who presented with a 1-year history of lower extremity weakness, pain, and numbness and was found to have a cervical, intradural extramedullary tumor. In addition to the case report, the authors perform a thorough review of all previously published cases of spinal SFT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we retrospectively reviewed our experience in the surgical management of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT)/hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) of the spinal cord. METHODS Sixteen patients with SFT/HPCs of the spinal cord were enrolled in this study. Data on clinical presentation, radiologic findings, histopathologic features, surgical treatment, adjuvant therapy, and prognosis were retrospectively reviewed. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests were used to identify the prognostic factors for recurrence and overall survival (OS). RESULTS Our series included 6 men and 10 women, with a male/female ratio of 1:1.7. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed slightly hyperintense lesions on T2-weighted images for all 16 patients. All tumors showed positive immunohistochemical staining for signal transducer and activator of transcription 6. Statistical analysis of clinical data showed that age, gender, tumor location, tumor size, medullary compartment location, and Ki-67 index were not associated with recurrence and OS (P > 0.05). However, World Health Organization grade III was significantly associated with recurrence (P < 0.01). Gross total resection (GTR) and postoperative radiotherapy significantly reduced recurrence (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05), but only GTR showed remarkable benefits to improve OS (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS SFT/HPCs of spinal cord are rare neoplasms with a propensity to recur. Hyperintensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging combined with positive immunohistochemical staining for signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 are important clues for classification and differentiation of these tumors. The extent of resection, World Health Organization grade, and postoperative radiotherapy might be predictive factors for recurrence. Complete tumor resection should be sought whenever possible, and adjuvant radiotherapy is recommended after surgical resection. Moreover, regular and long-term follow-up is mandatory to monitor recurrence.

Abstract
This study investigated the surgical results of a single-stage posterolateral approach with arc incision, unilateral laminectomy, and costotransversectomy for the management of dumbbell tumors and paraspinal tumors of the thoracic spine. From January 2010 to March 2017, 14 patients with dumbbell tumors or paraspinal tumors of the thoracic spine who underwent resection with single-stage posterolateral approach were followed up and analyzed retrospectively. The operations were performed using a single-stage posterolateral approach with arc incision, unilateral laminectomy, and costotransversectomy without any instrumentation. We reviewed the scores of clinical symptoms and imaging results, including postoperative MRI and reconstructed 3D-CT images. Gross total removal was achieved in 13 patients, and subtotal removal was achieved in 1 case. Histopathology revealed schwannoma in 9 patients, angiolipoma in 1 patient, and paraganglioma and mixed hemangioma in 2 patients each. No significant operative or postoperative complications occurred in any patient. The 14 patients were followed up for 14-68 months (mean 39.4 months). At the final follow-up, no obvious spinal deformity or tumor recurrence was found in any patient except one with paraganglioma. Single-stage posterolateral approach is a good alternative surgical method for removing dumbbell tumors and paraspinal tumors of the thoracic spine without necessitating a subsequent anterior operation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resection of posterior mediastinal tumors may be complicated by bleeding or neurologic injury. Preoperative spinal angiography of mediastinal tumors has been underreported or not commonly practiced. This study evaluated the selection criteria and outcomes of patients with posterior mediastinal tumors who underwent preoperative angiography and embolization. METHODS This was a single-institution retrospective study of patients with posterior mediastinal tumors from 2002 to 2016. Multilevel spinal angiography was performed, with or without selective arterial embolization of vascular supply, in patients selected by thoracic or neurologic surgeons. RESULTS Ten of 87 patients (11%) with posterior mediastinal tumors underwent preoperative angiography. A mean of 11 arteries (range, 2 to 25) were studied. Embolization in 7 of 10 patients successfully occluded 1 to 3 arteries. There was no significant difference in age, sex, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification, operative time, operative blood loss, complications, or death between patients with or without angiography. Patients who underwent angiography had larger tumors (1,490 vs 97 cm3, p < 0.0001), involvement of the neuroforamen (44% vs 10%, p < 0.05), and a longer hospital stay (9 vs 4.5 days, p < 0.05). Angiography was complicated in 1 patient by vocal cord ulceration after intubation of a tumor-compressed trachea. Shared blood supply between the tumor and the spinal cord precluded embolization and tumor resection in 1 patient. Use of angiography increased over time. CONCLUSIONS Selective preoperative angiography for evaluation of posterior mediastinal tumors identifies arterial variations, threatened spinal arteries, and targets for embolization. The specific role of angiography and embolization requires further investigation to standardize indications and protocols for the number of arteries examined.

Abstract
Introduction: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is rarely diagnosed in clinical practice. Since its initial descriptions in the central nervous system (CNS) and the orbits, very few case reports and small case series have expanded their clinical and pathological characterization. We sought to describe a cases series of SFT from a single laboratory of neuropathology belonging to a tertiary university hospital. Methods: Retrospective clinical and histopathological description of eight cases of CNS and orbital SFT diagnosed over a 21-year period of time. Results: Median age was 47.3 years and four were males. Clinical presentation was related to local mass effect in all. Tumors occurred in the orbits (5/62.5%), intracranial dura attached (2), and the spinal medulla (1). The neuropathology showed the presence of hemangiopericytoma type (2), classic type (3), and mixed type (3). Histological anaplasia was present in two cases. Widespread/total immunoreactivity for vimentin, CD34, and Bcl-2 was present in all. Gross total removal was conducted in the majority (6/75%) and subtotal removal in 2 (25%). Three patients were submitted to adjuvant treatment (radiosurgery and radiotherapy). Recurrence occurred in four patients, 13–120 months after surgical intervention. Anaplasia was present in one case of recurrence. Conclusion: Our case series confirms the clinical and neuropathological diversity of CNS and orbital SFTs. Studies with longer follow-up periods are necessary to better understand the clinical behavior and prognosis of the SFT in the CNS and orbits.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumors of the spine are rare lesions. Their description in the literature is limited to case reports and small case series. While generally benign lesions, they can recur and occasionally occur as malignancies. Here the authors present the case of a 10-year-old boy, the youngest patient and first preadolescent reported thus far, with this condition. In addition, they perform a comprehensive review of all previously published cases of spinal solitary fibrous tumors.
